Google Says It Is A Chilling Effect, Product Creators Say It Is About Time!

I saw this on the bottom of a Google SERPs page tonight:

For product developers, who are used to seeing their stuff put into the wild, this is awesome good news.

For the people who host stolen content, it is the teaser that Google can stomp on their heads.

    Bill,

Sadly, I doubt Google is being proactive in these
circumstances. It is much more likely that they
are simply following the "Safe Harbor" guidelines.

Looking a little more deeply into the Chilling Effects
database Google have only 2 entries.

You are right, because this particular one was triggered by a Cease And Desist order.

I recently sent Google about 10 or so DMCAs and they didn't act on all but one. Not only that, but quite a few of the infringing sites selling pirated goods were showing Adsense and I pointed that out to them that they were profiting from piracy. Didn't bother them.

I'm curious if you reported that by clicking on the Adsense/AdChoices logo and reporting it through Adsense or through the legal department.

I'm guessing the Adsense department might be a bit more harsh on a site violating the Adsense TOS than the legal department who would prefer you just leave them alone. (Obviously they are not going to kill the site, but might kill their revenue model.)

I did it two ways ... one through the channel for copyright notices and one through the Adsense channel. Both were not helpful. The Adsense one, even though I pointed out the product, accompanied by a DMCA, said they didn't see any infringement.

The other channel pretty much ignored the complaint.
