    You definitely should charge something, as you said, free is usually perceived as 'of no value.'

    You could 'weed' out using 'auditions.'

    Charge a nominal application fee maybe?

    Then, give a set of instructions. People who don't at least 'complete' assignments, get kicked out.

    As you move up the 'auditions' keep weeding out with grading, results, etc.

    If I think of anything else, I'll repost.
