Product Reviews: How Long Do You Make Yours?

got a product review site that is making decent $$ monthly from Amazon.

When i first started out, i was writing 500-550 word reviews to include product features and specifications, paragraph intro to product and final conlcusion.

then for no other reason than i thought it was too clumsy, i decided to remove the product features and specification and shorten them down to around 350 words each including the final conclusion.

how long are your reviews? have you noticed any different results with long as opposed to shorter reviews?

350 words is hardly a comprehensive review. Most people are aiming at 800 words plus.

    I use 1000 word reviews which i outsource.(expensive products)

How much do you pay for the 1000 words Steven?

i understand wanting to be comprehensive but i feel 800+ words may turn people off.

it might if they want to buy something cheap. But products $500+ calls for something a little more.

It matters what product and niche you're writing the review about. Inexpensive products should have reviews of 400-600 words while expensive courses and products should be 800-1,200 words. I have a few successful review sites up and I usually write an average of 800 word reviews for a product review site which, on average, reviews products that are $50 each.

my site covers products ranging from $120-$450

like i said, 350 words right now is what i average. reading the consensus of this thread, i should probably increase it at least to 800.

i cover a products strengths as well as weakness on top of my personal take on it and conclusion.

800 words is probably the least you should offer in your instance. Since you're reviewing products on Amazon, I'm predicting that you're reviewing physical products. I would recommend to create in depth articles that are at the range of 800 - 1,100 words. It's your take on this but these are my recommendations for you to get people to purchase via your affiliate link. When post people want to buy a mid ticket to high ticket product ($150 - $2,000), they usually look through many reviews and if you're lucky, your affiliate link will be clicked. However, if you provide an in depth and detailed review covering all their needs, then they'll probably go ahead and purchase the product without requiring others perspectives on specific details regarding the product.

I really like that answer. If you give them EVERY SINGLE THING they're looking for in a comprehensive review, then the review process should end right then and there... and the buying process should begin.

          Sounds perfectly logical to me.

1000+ words is good for the consumer and the search engines.

Just don't make it a big wall of text. Break it up into topical paragraphs with proper headlines(h2's or h3's) and it won't turn off the readers.

The last thing I do is count the words. Content is what is important. The review should clearly state the features/specifications of the product, who uses the product, the benefits of using the product, all positive aspects of the product and negative comments that have been noted about the product by other reviewers should be handled just as you would objections (turn a negative into a positive if at all possible or when not possible end this section on a positive note about the performance, quality or durability of the product) always end with a short summary about the product and the recommendation to viewers. If all of this is done in the review no matter what your word count you have done a good job and should have good conversion rates for your product reviews.

You need to understand the product and know the market. Then you need to write what needs to be written. Let it be the length it turns out to be. Length is not the issue, content is.

It depends on the product. Whatever the length make sure it is easy to read. Always include all of the basic details a potential buyer will need to know to buy a product.

honest question: do potential buyers really care about product dimensions and weight in a product review?

i know they care about programable settings, etc but dimensions and weight?

About 400 words, but really depends on factors such as type of product, etc

mine is in the wine niche so when you consider the customer base, they tend to be more observant, mature and detail oriented.

It depends on the product and the buyer.

For example, I'm looking at the printer in my office right now. The weight really wasn't an issue, but the footprint was. It had to fit in the space I had and still be usable/accessible.

Appliances are another product category where dimensions and weight might make a difference. Especially if one model is considerably heavier/bigger or lighter/smaller than others in its class.

In the wine niche, if you can say everything you need to say in 350 words, then use 350 words. If you need more to do the job, use them.

I know that, as a consumer, I would expect a longer review of a rare vintage wine than I would of an inexpensive jug wine or an accessory like a fancy corkscrew.
