Google images are fine to use. If you try to upload one that is protected by a copywright, then it won't upload. Other than that, they are public property.

I don't know whether to call that dumb or nuts, but it is amazing. You might want to research that a bit more.

There are heavyweight teams with serious legal muscle that play a game called image extortion. Getty images is the most famous for this. One company used a $10 image of theirs without permission and wound up paying over 4000 for it. Somehow, even though it was copyrighted, it uploaded.

  Correct, any image taken by anyone, remains their property whether or not they place a big copyright symbol over it or not.
  
  Your main option is to search for directories that have ROYALTY FREE images in them. Sure you can find images that are totally free but they are often not of high quality.
  
  If this is your niche, then surely you should be able to go outside with your phone camera and take original shots? The main downside of royalty free is that they usually require that you include a url reference to the site which of course leaks some PR away from the page for every article you put an image in.

p.s. I could upload copyright material all day long, and the software will let me do it.

First of all I have to concur with Istvan and Bill and rowbot - This ranks as one of the stupidest pieces of "advice" ever dispensed on this forum. Google even states on every image that it may be the subject of a copyright.

Otherwise one place you might want to look is the Creative Commons archive of images.

Wikimedia Commons

Note however that not all of these images can be used, and each image comes with details regarding it's acceptable use. In many cases however they can be used by simply providing attribution to the original owner. But be careful and read and abide by the terms of use before you make use of any image here.

StockXchng is also another source of images, again you MUST abide by the terms of use for each of them before using them on your site. Don't just assume that because they are on StockXchng that you are free to use them.

Ha ha ha ha! I can't believe people still think this.
Why would anyone think that someone such as myself would spend $1,000s on camera equipment, get up at 4am drive for hours and run around all day so that someone else can have a free ride?!

Maybe I'm just a money grabbing **** but I have made several thousand dollars over the last few years having a solicitor send out letters demanding payment for the use of my photos. And believe me, I am very, very, very cheap compared to the big agencies such as Getty and Corbis.

So, yes, you can grab photos off the internet for free, but unless you are registered and host in Afghanistan then you may receive a hefty bill and a take down notice!

Fotolio.com and 123rf.com sell images for $1 each!!

Don't be stupid and grab free images. The guy who gave you the images won't protect you if he doesn't really have the rights to give you those images.

But, with an image licensing company, you will be much safer and better protected than tossing your luck to the wind.

I like to use Clipart.com. They have some good photos in addition to the clipart. It can be a little expensive if you don't sign up for a longer subscription. It's like $14.95 for one week or $32 for a month's access.

Thank you for everyones advice. I've just took a look at iStock Photo: Royalty Free Stock Photography, Vector Art Images, Music & Video Stock Footage | iStock

And I must say its got some amazing images. Much better than anything else you would ever find just searching google images. The images are very clear and professionally done.

You do pay about $1 to download each image but in my eyes its worth if because like I said the images are very good. You have a lot more choice of images to pick from and you can have pice of mind that you will not get into trouble for using someone else's images.

For free images, stock.xchng is a good choice. You may need permission from the owner of a image before you can use it. Further, you would need to give a link back to the page where you found the photo, from your blog.

To buy images, some of the sites for royalty-free images include istock.com and shutterstock.com. Many sites that sell royalty-free images have options to subscribe on a monthly or yearly basis. Some even allow to buy photos and illustrations on demand. That is, you don't have to opt for the subscription route.

I'll quote the site owner's caveat posted at the end of the list:

Important Caveat: Remember, just because a website has a collection of images does NOT give you the automatic right to use those images. The owner of any image or photograph has a legal copyright in that image. Make sure you purchase the right to use an image, or the image is in the public domain, or the image is under a creative commons license that gives you the right to use that image, or you receive written approval to use the image from the owner. Check the Terms of Service of any website. Never assume you have the right to use an image unless it’s clearly spelled out. Otherwise, you could someday get a letter demanding that you pay $1000 (or some other large amount) per image, or a lawsuit charging you with misappropriating someone else’s copyrighted material.

Legally you cannot use a photo you find on the web with out the photographer's permission.

Stock photography websites contain thousands of existing photographs that can be licensed for specific uses. A customer who uses stock photography instead of hiring a photographer can save time, effort and money. Typically publishers can either purchase exclusive rights to a single image or they can purchase a subscription of sorts. The subscriptions allow publishers to download a limited number of photos over a specified period of time.

Stock photo websites allow webmasters, marketers and publishers to locate pictures for their marketing and promotional materials without the hassle of organizing a photo shoot. With copyright laws businesses must be very careful in using unlicensed photos.

There are also risks to using "free" photographs. Many of the free websites contain collaborative works from multiple photographers and artists. While the websites attempt to monitor the images in their collections in violation of copyright laws, there are no guarantees. If you opt to use photographs or images from a free portal, it is important to keep this in mind.

Unless, as is often the case, the photographer doesn't hold the rights to the photo. That has come up on this board more than once.

Someone has, in good faith, acquired a photo from a photographer and later is served with either a takedown notice or a settlement offer in lieu of a lawsuit.

I guess using google images are not as illegals as it has been told or understood. However, there are some images which are copyrighted, as it is written in bottom of image. SO we should not use those image. Otherwise we are free to use.

Apparently, from reading some of the responses in this thread, the amount of knowledge available on the internet is inversely proportional to the amount of information on the net.

Either that, or whatever they're putting in the drinking water these last few decades is taking its' toll on the human IQ.

This is true, as long as you comply with the license! This means you need to attribute the work properly.

Another place to find images is Wikipedia. You must click on the image and then view the image rights. Nearly all of Wikipedia images are usable, but most require some form of attribution to be made. Some may restrict use for "for profit" uses.

There are many images on Wikipedia that are public domain. These images require nothing from you.

Depending on how bad you want an image, you could use google images and then contact the copyright holder. HOWEVER there is a downside - the person hosting or sharing the image may not have any rights to the image!

For one of my sites, I have been using the site free digital photos . net (I don't have enough posts here yet to put up a link. Take the spaces out)

You can either pay for the photo OR you can download it for free, providing you give credit to the owner of the image.

But if you want ( also for those who want only) to use google here is step by step what you have to do in order to not go in trouble.
Go to Google image
Select Advanced Image Search
Under " Need more tools?" you have Usage rights:
select "Commercial use"
And you are good to go!

That depends.

Most images will take you to the Flickr page.

Be sure and check the usage rights on the right hand side. I've used that technique above many times - only to find that the photography 'sold-out' and gave their rights away to a major stock company.

Rule of thumb: the higher quality of image - the more likely the stock photo company's have claimed it.

Be careful out there.

Can anyone verify if the following is true: Facebook users that upload pictures that share the pictures become public property?

I heard, can't remember who said or where, it was a while ago, that once a picture on FB is shared its basically up for grabs.

Can anyone shine a light on this factoid?

I use pictures the very odd time from my own friend list and tell them what I'm doing with it and its never been a problem, but I'm thinking beyond my own friend list because there are some good ones.

Unless Facebook has language to that effect in their terms of use, it's not true.

Copyright attaches to the creator of the image unless assigned otherwise.

In plain English:

Unless Facebook's terms of use say that any photo I post is public domain, I keep all rights to that photo. If you want to use it, you need my permission. And you need to honor any conditions I put on that permission, like giving me credit in the form I specify.
