Does a major Site redesign risk SEO, SERP

I have a11 year old site, that looks like it's 11 years old. It USED to have very good rank but has been pushed out for reasons not relevant. I have decent traffic still, but know that it needs to look modern and professional to entice visitors to buy from me.

My question is will a major site redesign affect any aspect of SEO?

I plan on keeping most of the current content,, just adding some graphics and making it look more clean.

any suggestions and experience on this matter is greatly appreciated

  • As long as all the urls remain the same, you're fine.
  • Working from experience I would generally say, No. Not if you are only altering the design.

I do wonder what you mean by, "pushed out for reasons not relevant".... Especially when asking about SEO.

    Anyway...

I have recently explained much the same to a large company in the UK that just "re-designed" their site but didn't change the content.

I was sat at the boardroom table with 2 of the Directors and the Digital Marketing Manager, the proof has played out over the last week or so.

Looks are not so important to Google, so if you had pants SERPS before it is likely they will be equally pants afterwards.

    Content is King.

If you can change the content and the design, perfect, otherwise, change the content.

I would expect agreement from most everyone.

    • I agree as long as the content remains the same, or becomes more SEO friendly, you'll be fine.
  • Actually, if the designer and/or new CMS adds new bloated code to the site, and/or causes the H tags to become improperly nested, it could affect the ranking of the site.

Make sure you know how the site wil lbe coded before it is implemented.
