Do I need an auto responder?

I want to create a website where people can opt in there email address so I can email them at a later date. I don't care about automatically sending out pre written emails. Do I need an auto responder to do this or is there another way? Thanks.

Yes, you need an autoresponder so you can capture their email addresses and so you can build your list. To send them the emails automatically is already a bonus

The auto responder is the most important tool in the internet marketing arsenal you have. With this tool you can build a crowd of targeted subscribers and communicate to them as often as you like with the press of one button.

You definitely need an autoresponder based on your description. You actually just described your need as what an autoresponder exactly does.

You really need to capture email as soon as you start with IM. If not you can potentially lose a lot of customers, hence income.

I would go for one of these 3:
    Aweber
Email Marketing Software & Autoresponder from GetResponse
Email Marketing and Social Media Marketing Software - iContact

For sure you need an autoresponder and sooner or later you also need hosting if do not yet. The GVO package might be the All-Inclusive thing you'd need.
    Lots of success, Martin

Hope this message finds you well.

Hmm, you said two conflicting things.

You said that you don't care about automatically sending emails.

Then you asked whether you will need an auto-responder.

Auto-responder means automatically sending an email.

Just trying to make it clear.

Basically there are two things you should be aware of:

    1) Auto-responder sends pre-written emails automatically.
    2) "Campaign" allows you to send an email to entire list at any time you want.

These two features are a must for any quality list building software.

    You can use:
    Aweber, or
    Mailchimp

Both have Auto-responder and Campaign sending features!

    In addition, may I suggest:

If you figure out a way to blatantly ask people for a subscription once they enter your page (blatantly block your content with a subscribe form), this will potentially increase your list sign up rate by 300% or something like that.

Surprisingly, it will also lower the bounce rate for that page. Because people will see you are doing a newsletter... and that gives them a sense that you are serious about offering content.

Put a list sign up form on all high traffic pages on your sites. You can collect leads like crazy.

An autoresponder service does a heck of a lot more than just allow you to set up a sequence of emails that get sent out automatically. It allows you to track open rates, click throughs, verify optins (which is important if you ever get accused of spamming anyone) and takes care of actually sending the mail and keeping your email address from being blacklisted... ummmm... and also takes care of all the little details like maintainging your list and formatting emails with the little things that you might forget like an opt-out link which is required.

For less than $20 a month you can have all of the garbage taken care of for you automatically... worth it in my book. Hope this helps!

As far as tools for internet marketing go, in my humble opinion, the most vital is a good autoresponder.

There are lots of them out there, but the most well known name is Aweber. My advice is to go there and see what they can offer you.

Mailchimp is also a good option as you can initially use at as a free option.

You don't need an autoresponder. You can handle email lists with wordpress plugins.

If you go the route of a wordpress plug-in or bypass
setting up a real autoresponder then make sure you
        understand mass emailing rules/laws.

I use Aweber because they handle all the **** I don't
want to handle. Like making sure I'm can-spam compliant
and that my IP's don't get blacklisted.

If you use a wordpress plugin and your own website
IP address to send hundreds or thousands of emails
you could end up severely hurting your IP and domain
        for the future.

Andy is an incredibly smart dude around here though
so I'm sure he'll point you in a direction that avoids all
        that drama.

I've been using Mail Chimp lately but have used aweber and Instant Customer. It just depends on what you're looking to do. Mail Chimp has some great templates that the other companies don't have.

Most hosting accounts, at least those with Fantastico, also offer mailing list software. It's what we used before Aweber, et al, brainwashed the IM community into believing they were the only option.

Yes, they make compliance easier. But you don't NEED an autoresponder if all you intend to do is broadcast one-off emails (like an ezine). Simply set up the mailing list software as an "announcement list"...

In my opinion, if your going to make it in this business, Ive never met anyone who is successful without having an autoreponder, that's how vital it is, you could realistically build a list of several thousand quickly if you know how, think about sitting down and sending an individual email out (if that was even possible) to all those folks? your standard isp cant and wont handle it, that's why you need it.
some that ive used are Aweber, Icontact, trafficwave, if you google auto repsonder you get more than your share pick from, hope this helps

Don't believe that you do not need a autoresponder. Go get aweber so you can utilize follow up emails which allow you to keep contact with your prospects for years to come on autopilot. You will have to write all of the messages but once you do it serves as a series of emails sent automatically.

you need an autoresponder, I think imnica has much much cheaper price than any other established autoresponder.. or maybe you can have a wordpress theme that can capture emails with no autoresponder, but just emails data ...
