This will shave 3 months off your learning curve or your money back...

Lot's of new folks around, and I want to share what made the biggest difference in my understanding of "IM" and I use that phrase loosely, because 95% of what's talked about here has nothing to do with marketing...

Anyway... Most people are starting out either building small sites for affiliate marketing or adsense. And that's great, there's nothing wrong with that. But they seem to all get stuck on the same thing, wondering what they're supposed to do with the site to get traffic, promote it, etc.

One day I had a breakthrough. It was probably 9 months ago. But I asked myself, what would I do if were opening a real business in a month.

And I came up with a simple little list:

1. I'd tell everyone I knew and ask them to tell folks they knew - online this can done via facebook, twitter, or other social marketing. Basically generating some buzz.

2. I'd write a press release and submit for syndication. (not some junk press release site, use webwire .com and pay for the $20 option)

3. I'd actively participate on forums and blogs that were related to my business and build relationships with the bloggers. I'd start establishing myself as an authority.

4. I'd write high quality relevant articles, and work to get them published on those blogs I talked about in number 3. I'd also look for offline publications that make sense.

5. I'd publish relevant videos on you tube driving people back to my site.

I could go on, but I want to make a point and I think most people have stopped reading by now. If you treat your little MFA site or small affiliate site like a real business, and think of it as such everything else starts making sense.

You realize that link building in a silo makes little sense. You soon realize that filling out a forum profile and never participating on a forum is dumb.

And at some point you realize what you need is a simple strategy, not a random assortment of techniques that you hope will work.

So I have a challenge for all those struggling to make it click.

Ask yourself what you would do if you were a HVAC repair man getting ready to open a new business. Now translate your answers into how you can promote your website about wooden wine corks (which I happen to have one sitting on my desk that my wife gave me as an anniversary present).

Hope that helps. If not, make sure to call my refund dept. We're here 24/7 and haven't had give one out in years for this kind of offer.

Great share here. Indeed, establishing yourself as an authority in a niche is a great way to build trust with your prospects and if you are building a list at the same time, it's easier to convert the list afterwards.

Especially if the niche is small, it's not too hard to establish yourself as an authority.

Yeah, I just know for me connecting the dots between everything didn't make sense until I said, "what would I do if this was a real business?" Then all of the sudden submitting a press release makes perfect sense (just as a random example). Before it was just part of an SEO plan that made no sense.

Ironically, most people here (based on a very loose sampling of threads/responses) would say they need to:

    1) Buy a newer truck

    2) Subscribe to every HVAC list they can find

    3) Shop for and purchase as many tools for the trade as possible

    4) Download some good technical manuals from Amazon, et al, on HVAC systems

    5) Determine who is the best HVAC Guru to follow

    6) Find a HVAC forum where you can ask questions / rant about payment processors, etc.

    7) Set up a squeeze page to collect names and email addys (like someone with a HVAC problem wants a relationship with a repairman :rolleyes

    8) See if they can get a refund on some of the tools they bought

    9) Source T-Shirts and ball caps to put their logo on

    10) Take the next three days off

Somehow, your list looks a lot more productive than the list above.

That's because it's more focused on getting eyeballs to your offers than the 10 I listed.

Eyeballs. They're not just for breakfast, anymore...

At the end of the day it all boils down to an irresistible offer. Everything else can suck, but if the offer is to good to pass up you'll have a winner every time.

I agree it's sensible advice - but disagree about the title - it's misleading and not followed through in the thread.
