Non-Reactive Marketing - Panda Shmanda

For years I've practiced what I call "non-reactive marketing". For a time I saw it as a flaw in my work habits. Staying up to date on the latest shiny new thing has never had any fascination for me.

A new product launch is announced and everyone runs to check it and gets on the list to buy it the moment it's released. I ignore it. Don't have time to waste reading one sales page after another -and I figure if the product is good after launch, I'll hear about it and try it then. Result: I try very few new products.

A new WP plugin is discussed and people rush to add it to their blogs. I ignore it or make a note about it if I need it later. A month down the road I learn those who added it had hosting problems due to overuse of resources.

Google makes a change in its algorithm and there's a widespread panic among marketers. Many rush to make corrections or try to refocus their efforts to adjust to google's latest pronouncements. Sites are abandoned by some marketers while others work desperately to rebuild sites following the latest google rules.

I just keep doing what I've been doing and wait to see what happens.

I did this non-reactive marketing with the Panda update. My sites dropped rather drastically as did my adsense income. I wasn't happy but thought I'd wait and see what happened before making any major changes. I posted in a thread here that it looked like I needed to get to work on some sites to bring them back - but still decided to wait and see.

So far this month - 4 days - I've earned as much in adsense as I earned all of last month. My sites are gradually coming back without me doing anything about it.

All of my sites have original content I wrote. All are at least 50 pages and many are hundreds of pages of decent content. There are no tricks and I have no fancy backlinking strategies.

Point is - don't panic when something changes. Give things time to settle in. Buy new stuff after others spend their time testing it. Give google changes time to adjust and stabilize. Build good sites in carefully chosen niches and focus on quality content - and chances are, you'll be fine.

You'll save loads of time, lots of money and avoid stress.

  • Biding your time is always sound advice Kay. When these changes come along a calm and clear head usually wins the day. I guess one thing though is that such changes also present an opportunity for your over your competition. By sticking to the fundamentals and taking a sober look at your sites, you (and anyone else for that matter) can benefit from your competition abandoning ship so to speak because they think their site is all washed up.

Indeed Kay - wise words. The key for everything in life as far as I am concerned is to always act, but not react (although my in-laws are my biggest test!!!)
