Hey Warrior Friends - Can you all take a moment and check this out for me?

Just got an email from someone pointing out a strange error at the very bottom of one of my home pages.

Can you all take about 90 seconds and go to Achieve Competitive Advantage with Better Business Analysis and Improved Business Performance. and scroll directly to the very bottom of the page to see if there is a warning message across the bottom?

Looks like this:

This site has been up for 2.5 years, and it has been tested on all the browsers, and I'm kinda at a loss to explain this at the moment.

    Didn't even take 90 seconds!

No message showing for me either.

    I.E. 7 browser used.

    Hope that helps.

Well that confirms my experience with it for the past 2.5 years. This is really odd. I've never seen an error code like that.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to confirm this for me!!! It's much appreciated.

Don't know if you still need people to check it, but it looks fine on my computer from Firefox as well.

      Hi Tom,

I will see if I can Google any info on the problem. Looks OK with my Firefox 3. I've never even seen this particular warning before.

I don't know if it's a browser problem or not (my technical knowledge is limited), but whenever I put up a new site I submit it at Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots for a reality check. It's a free service that lets you check how your site looks in umpteen different browsers, and it might show you what browser your site is having problems with.

p.s. Hmm, I didn't add that text link to the site I mentioned, I just copied & pasted the url. I'd sure like to know the hocus-pocus the site uses to automagically add anchor text when someone links to them!

Used Firefox, Flock and Safari with Mac.
    Your site shows up clean.
I guess someone is scamming you somehow,
or worse - perhaps a virus?

    Hey everybody,

I really appreciate the time you took to check this out and confirm that it is working ok.

Dee - When I develop these pages, checking for browser compatibility is an automatic step before the pages are posted.

Sandy - I doubt this is a virus. Also, the guy that reported this to me, reported back later and said he no longer is getting this error. Go figure.

Tomas - BTW, this server has been running awesome since you tweaked it. For anybody with a dedicated server that needs an admin to configure it for maximum efficiency, as well as to lock the doors and windows, Tomas is your guy. I highly recommend him.

      Tom,

You may want to see if your web host rolled out a new version of PHP and then backed it out again. Or, possibly, messed with their default PHP configuration and temporarily turned off register_globals. I've seen at least one host make that the default for all sites, as a security issue.

Of course, it could as easily have been a transient error, so I wouldn't spend a huge amount of time on it...

register_globals should be set to "Off" at all time! If you have register_globals set to "On" and are using something like Joomla, phpBB or aMember (for example), the question is not about "If" your web will be hacked, it's about "When".

        Tom:

The warning message actually does appear on the "Contact" page. I'll check what's causing it and how to fix it.

    Good morning Paul,

Another early riser I see. Actually if it was a host issue, everybody would be seeing it.

So, like you say, I'm treating this as one of those transients errors, since nobody else has been able to duplicate it.

    Thanks

    Tom,

If you want, I'll login to your server and disable the warning, that should be safe.

This is the technical explanation of the problem from the php.net website:

PHP versions 4.2.3 and lower have an undocumented feature/bug that allows you to initialize a session variable in the global scope, albeit register_globals is disabled. PHP 4.3.0 and later will warn you, if this feature is used by enabling both session.bug_compat_42 and session.bug_compat_warn.
