WSO Sellers Beware - This has me concerned...

Today I logged into my email and saw the following subject line:

Subject: Notification of Limited Account Access RXI034‏

The email was from Paypall.com

Now this email was luckily picked up by my spam filters so was actually inside my spam/junk folder which meant I was immediately skeptical of it. I went and opened the email and inside was the following:

Hello Business Name,

As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal
system. We recently contacted you after noticing an issue on your account.

We requested information from you for the following reason:

A recent review of your account determined that we require some additional
information from you in order to provide you with secure service.

Case ID Number: PP-857-318-616

This is a second reminder to log in to PayPal as soon as possible. Once you log in, you will be provided with steps to restore your account access.

Be sure to log in securely by using the following link:

Once you log in, you will be provided with steps to restore your account access. We appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure account safety.

In accordance with PayPal's User Agreement, your account access will remain
limited until the issue has been resolved. Unfortunately, if access to your
account remains limited for an extended period of time, it may result in further
limitations or eventual account closure. We encourage you to log in to your
PayPal account as soon as possible to help avoid this.

To review your account and some or all of the information that PayPal used to
make its decision to limit your account access, please visit the Resolution

clarification regarding your account access, please contact PayPal by visiting
the Help Center and clicking "Contact Us".

We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Please understand that this is a security measure intended to help protect you and your account. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thanks,

Now, you might be thinking, ok, so what? This is just a standard scam type email... move along Will. Usually I would... but then I noticed something. The first line of the email used my BUSINESS NAME. This business name is not published anywhere else and is not the name used on my email address so NO, they haven't just used the automatic email name insertion technique that a lot of scammers use. The ONLY place they could have got this business name is from the screen when you go to make a Paypal payment to me. (I might also point out that the only product I have had selling on this Paypal account over the last half a year is my WSO selling on this very forum. We use a different Paypal account to receive payments for our offline work.)

Ok, so they clicked on the order button, saw my business name, big deal right? Well that's one thing but they ALSO had the correct Paypal email address to send the spam email to. Once again this email address is NOT published anywhere else so the only way they could have got it is by going through and making an actual payment and purchasing my WSO product.

So, unless someone else has a better explanation, it appears we have someone who has purchased my WSO trying to then scam me with these Paypal emails. It's quite a good idea when you think about it. Buy cheap WSO's that you know have sold thousands of copies and will have a lot of money in their Paypal account. You then send them the spoof account limited email and I bet a lot of the WSO sellers probably fall for it. You then end up giving these people your Paypal login details, they clean you out and move on to the next person.

I just wanted to throw this out there ASAP and let others know this is happening, whether it is a member of this forum or not. It seems very suspicious to me. I also had my email account hacked into (had been fine for 10 years before hand) just days after launching my WSO so I know there are some less than ideal characters floating around these forums. You need only look at all the Black Hat forums for proof of that.

We always hear of 'buyer beware'... but I also want to remind people: SELLER BEWARE!!

Yep. There's another thread about it floating around. I've received two of these in the last three weeks, ecactly as you describe it. There are bloodsuckers everywhere.

    Hi Will,

One thing to keep in mind is that there is a growing mass of databases that can cross check almost anything with the click of a mouse.

It doesn't require specific knowledge the way it did in the past.

    Six degrees of separation?

    Horsepucky!

I think it's down to less than three these days.

    REMEMBER>>>

Never click on a PayPal link in an email...

Thanks for the heads up Will... I've just launched my very first WSO... Haven't reached 1000's of sales yet but ye, good to know in the future.

ALWAYS sign into your paypal account by going to the actual PAYPAL site and logging in directly from there and NEVER follow any link in an email.

This is what Paypal will tell you, and its what I always do,if there is an issue you will know about it after logging in.

At least you were smart enough to catch it, Will

thanks for the heads up sadly some will be caught by this scam.

    Hi Will,

I had that happen to mew a few months back. Somehow they got into my paypal account and deposited some foreign money and then withdrew it again. Fortunately I didn't have anything in there for them to steal. I will watch out for this in the futeure. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the heads up. Any time I get an account-related email from Paypal, I ignore it and go directly to Paypal (through the address bar) to check. It's certainly disturbing to think someone is using the WSO system to get people's emails.

Thanks for the warning. It's scary what someone with a lot of time on their hands and the technical know-how can find out about someone these days. Of course, I would never click on a link to PayPal in an email. I always log in to my account directly. There are too many of those phishing scams going around and you've got to be careful.

  • Will,

and Warriors. I was going to post several days ago but got side tracked. If you haven't yet, Go to your PayPal account and open it up and go the PayPal Community help forum or try this link:
https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/...munity/ct-p/US. It is burning up with hate and dicontent about Ebay/PayPal's new rules, limits and restrictions. At last count in one thread I was reading it had maxed out at 6000 posts mostly all irrate users.

Like I said if you haven't yet...Take your blood pressure medication and go do some reading. It has me worried especially if you use the PayPal button in Warrior Plus, etc.

Start at the My account section...

Very discouraging for the small business/marketer depending largely on PP...

    Old Dog

P.S. this is link to the 6000+ upset users https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/...S/td-p/14220/h

Never thought you might be suspicious of the links I posted I don't like links outside of the forum either. If you are interested here is the path within the the community. You don't have log in to reach the community.

P.S. If I can be of any assistance in your "Off" or "On"- line sales and marketing please PM me or email at WinnersChoice-Warrior@yahoo.com . Old Dog

Isn't there any security you can set up in your paypal account?

I tried accessing a friends paypal (he lives in another state) and I was blocked because of different IP address.

How does Paypal know when to block people and when not too?

And this applies to other important accounts as well.

Yesterday, I received a VERY well spoofed email purporting to be from my financial adviser, which is a very well-known company by the way.

Had I fallen for that one, it could have cost some serious change.

      Be very careful.

I recently got a similar email, coincidentally the same day as the 'real' PayPal emailed me. I had to call them about something anyhow so I asked them about it. I sent it to 'spoof@paypal.com' per request.

I have not heard back yet, but that is the email I was told to send all suspicious pp emails to.

I just got an EXACTLY the same email as yours - from service@paypall.com.
I kind of laughed at it, and it's funny how Gmail does pick up as a spam, so it's a good thing!

Other than that, what on earth is that guy thinking about using a such suspicious domain name with a double L to send these emails.

And I bet this guy is from this forum. Just like what you have mentioned, I only use my Paypal account for WSO purposes, and he got my email there!

    Sigh at that.

Remember that Warrior Forum is completely open.
Yes, it is a membership site and everyone posting are members
but anyone (not logged in) can access the WSO threads and buy the products.

I think that they don't even have to buy the products to get the business name and paypal email address. It depends on how you create your payment buttons and/or use Warrior+, JVZoo etc, but looking at some I can see the business name at the top of the Paypal page and if I scroll to the bottom there is a link which says go back to "paypal email address".
So harvesting that info does not look very difficult.

Yep, scammers are everywhere online, even in our comfy home here on WF (sad to say). There is one sure fire way you won't get scammed like this.

ALWAYS check the URL they redirect you to in any email you get from anyone sending you a link. If it doesn't say www.paypal.com/whatever then it is a scam. It's an easy miss to see paypall.com or paypal.co, etc.

Check this for every email and you will be safe.

Unfortunately these scams are getting more advanced. Always be vigilent (try to login directly to your Paypal account and never through a link in any email) and more importantly report the phishing scam or spoof site as soon as possible to Paypal so that they can warn others.

I have received emails claiming to be from paypal as well as banks I don't even have an account with saying my bank account is going to be restricted. Most of these go into my junk or spam folder straight away. The rules I apply are,

    1. Never login to any account using a log in link contained in an email
    2. All banks will tell you that they will never ask you for your bank account details including login details in an email or a snail mail. So don't give it out to anyone requesting it in an email.
    3. Always go to the paypal official website and log in from there. The same goes for online banking
    4. Change your password for banking and paypal account each month.
    5. If you get an email from your bank or paypal account giving you urgent instructions you need to do to, keep your account save, save your account, stop hacking of your account, confirm your account or anything else to do with your account, Never use the links in the email.

Just follow common sense and you should stay safe.

These fraudsters must be particularly thick.
