How I use 2 computers without ever syncing.

When I bought a laptop last year, I found myself having anxiety about how I was going to keep everything in sync. This is the solution I came up with.

What I use.

Desktop computer.

Laptop computer.

8 Gig Micro SD chip.
- You can use a thumb drive.

TrueCrypt encryption software.
- World class encryption.
- Free.
- Available for PCs, Macs, Linux, etc.

How I use it.

Create a 2 gig (or however big you need it) encrypted 'file' on the SD micro chip. This encrypted file is mounted as drive J: on whichever computer I'm using at the time. Your computer will treat this as just another drive while it is mounted.

All important files go on drive J:! All important work happens on drive J:!

Backups - Un-mount drive J:. Copy the contents of the SD drive (or thumb drive) to a backup folder on the computer. I have backups on both computers. I use the date in the folder name for backups. If I backup more than once a day, I just add a letter to the folder name. This keeps them in order.

SD-120105
SD-120106
SD-120106a
SD-120106b

The reasoning behind this is should I lose a computer (theft, damage, whatever) I would be aggravated but I would not be out of business. The most I would lose is about 1 day of work. In addition the files are unavailable to anyone else as they have been encrypted by Truecrypt.

Please share any ideas, thoughts, or tips of your own. Be aware, if I like your ideas I probably will borrow them.

You can also put encrypted containers into Dropbox. And you can use Crashplan for backups, it's more handsoff and you can backup to multiple offsite locations (all your friends who run Crashplan can become your backup destination). Manual syncing and backuping is too tedious for me.

Edit: Also, check out http://portableapps.com/. These people modify apps so that you can put them on a thumbdrive and they work on all computers without the need to install them. All settings etc are stored in the portable apps folder on the thumbdrive, not on the computer.

That is a really nice system Joe, and one of the better ideas I've seen lately. I'm doing everything with a single computer right now, but it might be a good way to do the back ups.

thanks (just to type it out too, the old fashioned way )

Well another thing you could do is a persistent linux install on a thumb drive and just save everything there and you'll have your whole os and everything, your files, your bookmarks and saved passwords, etc.

Then what ever computer your using, just chose your boot media, and select your usb thumb drive to boot from.

Dropbox or Sugar sync are my preferred solution for less than 2gbs. I usually switch between my desktop and laptop a couple times a day. And all my notes are on Google docs.

I also find that syncing bookmarks/favorites accross the browsers on both my computers is helpful to.

For each niche I am in, I have a bookmarks folder. In that folder are competing sites, forums, resources, related products, etc. All very organized.

I use Xmarks firefox plugin for the syncing

I actually install my portable apps in my dropbox folder, so everything is always perfectly synced up.

Then i just launch my browsers from my portable apps menu from any cpu I am on. This way all bookmarks, passwords, and extensions stay perfectly synced up.

With dropbox, everything is "local" so you can work on stuff while offline, and then when you reconnect, everything syncs up again.

Its not uncommon for me to use lots of different computers so I have pretty much mastered the art of working in the cloud.
