Cant access my wordpress site!

Hi

I cannot access the admin panel on my wordpress site.

I was trying to add a custom menu option in the functions.php file.

I added the code, saved and was automatically logged out of admin.

Going through my host control panel has made no difference. I am locked out.

When I am blocked out it reads "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfil the request."

Inexperienced with this, can anyone help, I am in need.

Thanks in advance.

Marcus

    Hi Marcus

You need to login via your CPanel and tackle the problem via your File Manager.

Ideally, you will have a backup of the file you amended before you added the code. You just need to navigate to the appropriate directory and FTP that file over the amended one.

    Marcus,

I did this once too. Locked myself out of my blog. I had to go into cpanel and delete it all. Started all over again

Lesson learnt ... backup .... backup .... backup

I would do what Will has suggested to see if you can spot the error. If for some reason you can't, I would call your hosting company. Depending on who you are with, usually they are pretty good and detecting hidden script errors.

I got into a bit of a mess last year with one of my main sites, and GoDaddy was able to help me out figure out the errors... well I should say some people at GoDaddy... because while some people that work there are well informed, at times you might get someone who doesn't know what he's talking about. Just gotta call back and try someone else.

    Good luck.

It can be done without loosing anything..... Just download the same wordpress version and extract it.. Now find functions.php which you were editing....

Now go to cpanel and rename the functions.php there as old_functions.php and upload the file from the directory you have extracted.....

Now try to login.... If it goes good simply logout from Cpanel and if not then delete the uploaded fuctions.php, rename the old_function.php back to functions.php and edit it and remove the code you have tried to insert....

    Regards

This happened to me as well. I did all the steps mentioned above and no success. Then I contacted my hosting provider and they solved it in about 30 minutes. Hope this helps.

You should have FTP access (or create an FTP account on your Cpanel)...and then upload the original functions.php via FTP. (Eg. using filezilla). Alternatively, you could upload the whole theme folder again to overwrite whatever you changed. If this doesn't work upload the whole wordpress folder. (USUALLY, this shouldn't be a big deal since all settings, posts etc. are in your database and they are not changed when you re-upload wordpress)

If this is still not solved i might be able to fix this for you.

(Key is..you always should have and know how to use FTP for exactly such cases. I know that with some themes, one simple typo can render your whole site useless so the only way to correct the problem is upload with FTP)
