Paid Ads Help Please!

We are a non-monetised community/group. Lots of forum members say that paid ads is a FAST way to grow. I must be careful about money but only while testing. If it goes well, I can spend more. Can anybody suggest a plan for testing some paid ads with low financial outlay? What type of ads to use, Facebook, Google etc.? How to start off? I have a blog (see signature) and I have opened a Facebook Fan Page but have no fans or content on it yet.
Any help will be be gratefully appreciated.

To get maximim success from paid advertising you want to
make sure you have a proven sales funnel in place.

I took a quick look at your website is it is very thin. If you send
paid advertising they will just likely bounce.

    - Write a killer 'About' page explaining who you are and why people
    should take your recommendations.

    - Your opt in is quite weak. There are no incentives and as people
don't know who you are, I'm guessing your conversion rate is very low.

I would focus on creating a platform where people will get access
to extreme value before spending money on advertising.

    Hope this helps.

PS I know I didn't answer your exact question but I'm trying to save you wasted money

PPS You should really build your business on your own domain.

If Wordpress changes their rules, you could lose your entire business.

I wouldn't advise this. You are much better off actually learning how to use Facebook ads so you only have to pay 1-2 cents for every fan or visitor and you won't then need to chase around vouchers. That's no way to run a business. Vouchers are ok to get started with and do some testing but if you need to rely on them for a profitable PPC campaign then it's not really a profitable campaign.

      Hi Nathan,
Thanks for the good advice. I'm not sure what you mean when you write that 'the website is very thin' but would certainly like you to say a bit more.
Will do the About page as soon as.
I know that my opt in is weak.
I was thinking about doing a free ebook of some blog posts. Is that what you mean by incentives?
Thanks again for the advice, Tommy

        Hi Tommy,

The very first thing you need to do is to
build your business on your own land.

        - Buy a domain
        - Get hosting

Or else all your work belongs to somebody else.
If the rules change you lose it all.

The last thing you want to do is to spend hundreds
of hours building it up to $5000 p/m and then lose it.

Then start building up your content.

        (Thin means not much content.)

        Hope this helps.

    I totally agree with Nathan,

You should buy first a domain and get a hosting.

    A lot of luck!

Depending on your niche, Facebook can be very cost effective. I built a Facebook page to 653 with $93 worth of ads.

If you're testing with search engines, I'd recommend Yahoo. While Google can drive more traffic, Yahoo is cheaper and an excellent place to test an ad to see if it is going to convert.

Once you know it's converting, put it on Google.

    Good luck.

I will echo that you absolutely need your own domain (a brandable) one before you start advertising any online business.

Use Google Adwords as your guide. Find the businesses in your industry that advertise week after week on Google. They are advertising profitably. Copy them. You will see that they all have catchy, short, brandable domains.

Copy them when it is time to place ads too. Copy their landing pages. Obviously you don't want to actually copy them verbatim. That is copyright infringement. But notice what they do as a group. What is in common between them. Do that.

Finally, you want to copy the most successful advertisers on Google, Microsoft Adcenter (Yahoo included) and Facebook, but you do NOT want to start your advertising there. That is where you advertise AFTER you have all of the other marketing channels saturated and profitable.

The well known marketing channels will always be the most challenging to master. Start with the marketing channels that aren't discussed daily. If you don't know anything about that, then hire an ad agency. Many charge only a percentage.

None will accept a client who doesn't even have their own website on their own domain though.

      Tommy,

As long as you intend to keep your blog non-monetized, you're perfectly ok hosting it at Wordpress.com. Non-monetized groups like yours are one of the types of user for whom Wordpress.com exists, and they say so openly, themselves.

It's only if you're planning to post anything like affiliate-links that you'd have a problem, there.

Warriors are used to "business users" and are quick to tell people, instinctively, that they "shouldn't" be hosting there. In your case, that may not actually be appropriate advice.
