every day my email inbox is flooded with comments notifications from my wordpress blog. It is for 10-30 UV/day blog, they dont even visit my site not say read my article to comment.

Now I am interested to know:

1. how do they know my blog address, and what tool they use to make comment on my blog.

2. What benefit will they get for commenting, i have set links on comments "non-follow",so i think they can not get backlinks from me. What else can they get?

Warriors, please share your knowledge.

spam is a huge prob for wordpress blogs. I've gotten spam notifications even when i have comments off on a blog. There are a few things you can do: get rid of the "powered by wordpress" in the footer of your blog. 2. set it up so that only registered users can comment. 3. use anti-spam filters such as akismet or others for wp.

Around here it's called "link building." I make it a point to disable comments on my WordPress sites.

i got a recommendation though. Use Livefyre Realtime Comments plugin and it is well-known for blocking spam comments. Give it a try and let us know how it work for you.

@godinu -- Great tip on removing the 'powered by wordpress' from the footer. I have been posting more regularly to one of my blogs this past month and the spam bots that so-called link builders use are killing me! I thought my iPhone was gonna heat up and explode the other day from downloading so many spam emails. LOL. Thanks!

I use akismet and it's very effective. It's in the plugins section. I have it set so I have to approve all comments before they post. It's tedious sometimes, but whatever.

Install a Wordpress plugin called "SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam" - it stops most spam.

They are for sure using some automated blog commenting software, which sends comments to thousands of blogs. You are a blog writer who has disabled the do-follow links, but not all have. So they do get some link juice spamming this way.

    Hi,
    It is called spamming.

    1. how do they know my blog address, and what tool they use to make comment on my blog = They don't even know your address, they pick randomly, (same niche or keyword), there are many tools out there do task like this "blast commenting"..

    2. What benefit will they get for commenting, i have set links on comments "non-follow",so i think they can not get backlinks from me. What else can they get? = Its a one of strategy for link building, ( The process of establishing relevant, inbound links to your website which help your website achieve higher ranking with the major search engines and drive targeted traffic to your site )... Yes you're right they have nothing, but not all people who set comments "non-follow" , so they just try their luck, its a robot who done this after all, they just click a single button...

Even no follow comments will still help a person get back links. Do follow comments are better but no follow comments still do count.

There is a major arguments on this on SEO Book, but for me Nofollow link is useless until its come to one of the most important aspects of link building, looking natural. If all you have are DoFollow links, this can look a little suspicious. There are rumors that Google sandboxes these websites, so this is where nofollow links are useful, to mixed up all your links...

Yea as warriors stated they are using automated tools like scrapebox and others, I have done some tests on nofollow links..Google said they don't count but they actually count toward ranking.

I have a website that was in the 300-400 position for more than a year so I decided to test some no follow links that has high PRs.. boyyy I went to 87 and started to see more impression so don't listen to people who tell you nofollow doesn't count..maybe it doesn't carry the page rank juice but it does effect rankings 100000%

You have 2 options, either disable the comments or install a plugin that will monitor them, alot of good plugins have an automated system where it checks for proxies so once someone post a message using a free proxy then it gets blocked right away..I don't use wordpress so I cannot suggest a plugin..

Use spam filter plugins...Akismet is best but paid plugin...Use free ones..They r also great.
Else use Facebook Comment plugin...Not a single spam there.

    Thnx

Yes its called spamming and links in Comment, I run and manage my private Blogs Network with over 600+ domains and over 8000+ sites. It was a nightmare at one stage as my inbox would get flooded and then hosting and bandwidth issues.

Akismet is one of the well known plugins that come packaged along with wordpress and does a great job in stopping these find of comments. You may wanna have a look at it.

I use Akismet for blockings those nasty comments. At first I was pretty confident that my site will be free of spammers as I have not even started any seo for it yet but I was quite shocked when after around 24 hours I received 40+ comments that came from nowhere. I have not even added any new post yet, they simply commented in the "Welcome" page.

Usually, my own personal blog has received more than 200 comments per day, and these comments are not valuable. It's what we call spamming. But one of my friend's blog has received more than 500 to 600 useless comments per day, all in pending mode. Don't approve these spam comments, it will only hurt your site's reputation.

Use Akismet and block most of them...there will still be some left but at least you will not feel so helpless...

The only benefits is that the software will show the user that work is being done..that is to spam the internet..lol

    1. They probably use Scrapebox.
    2. A backlink is a backlink, no follow will only stop the juice.

Your probable actions? Purchasing Scrapebox and doing the same? Don't go that route, unless you know what you are about to do. Venture into link-building first. Also note that most of these links probably don't aim to "their" main website as well, but third party websites.

How to stop this? Well, you on WordPress? Try Askimet, you can donate or use it for free.

    Hope this helped you out.

I both disable comments and uncheck the email notification system.

One of my blogs are getting a good amount of comments, and I would go crazy if I got an email every time

You can remove the spamming comments, and just leave the good ones.and beaware only comments from different ip address is helpful to you.as you said, even though the comments are added with nofollow attribute, It is also helpful to the one who do this.coz we also need nofollow backlink in the other hand except the dofollow links.
And they will get the target traffic with the link put on your post if someone is interested in the content.
