Recommendations for laptop or desktop please e

Looks like I'm going to have to replace my 4 year old desktop. It has given me problems for about the past 3 years with freezing, deleting things and so many more weird things. Now, it crashes whenever I leave it on and walk away for maybe 15 minutes or so. I've had the Geek Squad out and they can find nothing wrong. I also have Kaspersky Security on it.

Not sure if I want to get another desktop or a laptop. My main concern is if a laptop will have enough of everything for my use. Mainly I build websites. No gaming or music but I do have a good amount of pictures stored for my sites.

Any recommendations for either the laptop or desktop and brands would be appreciated. Also what should I be looking for as far as RAM, etc.

Thanks.

I would never tolerate problems for 3 years.
I use a desktop and would not consider a laptop because I prefer sitting at a desk and working. From a physical point of view, it also helps you control the time you spend working.

I have never owned a laptop and I know some people swear by them.
I think you probably need a few opinions and then you have to decide because you're the one who will be using it.

I've been very happy with my Dell Lattitude E5520, but I've only had it a month now. Make sure you get enough RAM. I put 8 gigs of RAM in this machine and I'm glad I did. For extra storage you have a range of options including external HDs.

The biggest issue/adjustment you might have with a laptop is the smaller screen size, but of course if you ensure it comes with a VGA out, you can use a larger desktop monitor or if it comes with HDMI, you can even patch it in to your flat screen TV.

If you are thinking of Dell, I suggest you do your research on their website but call to order the machine. I found that to be fast and painless...until I got the invoice of course

    Regards,

Instead of shelling out money, why don't you install Ubuntu (it can run alongside Windows) and see if that won't solve (some of) your problems - you have little to loose (but backup your files, just in case), since it's free/opensource software.

If it's not a hardware problem, Ubuntu should run fine, and you can consider making the change. If you still have freezes, etc. it may be time to upgrade. (If you do, don't buy Dell - I've had endless issues with both their desktops and laptops)

I have a laptop and a desktop from ASUS. Been very happy with them. Only problem with the laptop is their touchpad and mouse buttons kind of suck. Not sure if it is just my laptop model or all of their laptops. I plug in a trackball mouse though, so that is not a big deal to me. One of the best things about their stuff is it does not come loaded with a bunch of bloated software unlike a lot of other manufacturers.

I bought a 23" monitor to plug my laptop into when I'm working from home. Didn't want to constantly strain my eyes working on the laptop all the time.

I know a few people in the IT field. Other than building their own, they favor HP's.

These days with some of the deals out there, I don't think I would get anything with less than 6 megs of RAM.

I can't believe that it's not already been mentioned, but I have to go completely with Apple. I LOVE my iMac. It does everything, I have it loaded with 2TB of memory, and I love the extra large screen (27") as when I am doing research or getting inspiration, I can have multiple windows open side by side. With the new Lion software, if you are working on something and you have a power surge or something happens that causes you to lose power, it automatically saves everything and reopens your windows exactly as they were prior to your power loss.

Hope this helps and I'm totally sorry to hear about your loss of your other comp.

    Hey there,

I recently replaced both my desktop and my laptop. For my new desktop I went with a 27" iMac but honestly I'm not happy with it. Being my first MAC I expected much more with all the Mac lovers out there telling me how awesome they were..not so great trust me.

For my new laptop though I am over the top happy.

I bought it from dell on their website.

Its a Dell XPS 15" Laptop
i-7 3.1ghz (turbo boosted) Quad Core
    8GB RAM
    750gb HD
    Bluray Player
    2GB VIdeo Card

Now, all of that allows me to do EVERYTHING I need including recording, editing, and rendering videos in no time flat. My old laptop would render a 15 minute video in about 15 minutes. This one can do it in about 25 seconds (literally.)

Sooo, whats something like that cost? Not much actually. I got a instant $500 discount at Dell due to a sale they were having and did a Google search for another $100 savings so I got away for $999 before tax.

After the free shipping & handling and tax I think it ran right at $1,060 and was delivered a week before the scheduled date.

    Overall I give it a 5/5 stars.

    Cheers,

    James

I can't recommend a specific laptop/PC, but I do recommend checking reviews from the most well known manufacturers like Acer or HP before buying
