Kindle software (for people successfully selling Kindle books)

Hey,

I'm finally having some success with Kindle after bumping into someone here in Thailand that decided to mentor me (for a large fee may I add!)...

The question I have is what software are you using throughout the process of creating and promoting your books?

I'm a big fan of the 4 hour work week and if there's any software that gives me a shortcut here and there I'd love to know about it!

Also, if anyone has any ideas for software I'd be willing to get it created and released for free.

Joe, I was originally writing raw html with notetab. Lately I've been using ms word. There is some sort of free mobi creator out there if I'm not mistaken but I've been too busy writing to look into it.

I've got 3 ebooks on Amazon, one of which is selling quite well. However, I simply create the book myself as a .doc and then upload it directly on the DTP site. Admittedly, my ebooks are only 25-40 pages, but I've had no trouble doing it myself and it takes little time.

As far as the cover, I found a reasonably priced (and talented) cover creator on either the Create Space or Kindle Board forums. Again, it takes me ten minutes to describe to her what I'm looking for and - voila! - she pushes out a nice cover for me.

Now it's a little trickier preping your book for Smashwords (and the Nook/epub/Apple, etc.), but I've done that successfully on 2 out of my 3 books as well.

The bottom line is that I cannot imagine anything that could do it faster than I can do it manually. That's my two cents...

    Hey Joe,

Thanks for starting this thread and I'm glad to hear you are having success with your Kindle business.

This is a field I am very interested in and am keen to get into.

Could you please share a few pointers?

Are you able to make a full time income?

    Thanks,

    Mark

The actual process I use is simple. I use OpenOffice Writer and save the file as html. Plug that into MobiPocket Creator. Upload to Kindle. Slick as a whistle, and all free tools that already exist.

I use OO because it saves very clean html, without all the extra stuff MS Word inserts to make it play nice with the other Office apps.

John, I just convert my MS Word document into a PDF with PrimoPDF, then upload that file to Amazon Kindle. I've encountered no problems doing this and I find it useful to have the original files in both MS Word and PDF files for subsequent usage. I've been looking at MobiPocket Creator and I think this will be another step worth incorporating. Thanks
