Beating popular website - Ideas?

Here in New Zealand, our main auction website is TradeMe. It was launched before Ebay could get a foot-hold, and now dominates our buy/sell market.

We decided to run a small campaign on Facebook to see what kind of response we'd get, and encourage people to comment on what they're looking for in an auction site.
It was picked up by a national news site (see Facebook group plans TradeMe alternative | The National Business Review)

We have mixed reactions - many people simply scoff at the idea, and I know I would be one of them if I wasn't involved. But now, I'm even more determined to get this thing up and running, if only just to prove we can.

My question is, does anyone have any ideas on how we can encourage a lot of local feedback? The feedback is essential as it will drive the development of the website - and hopefully this will encourage the same users to switch.

I know that it's probably going to fail, but that's not the point - Nobody gets anywhere by giving up before they've even started.
