Do you give your visitor what he WANTS or what he NEEDS?

This is a really important issue I've been thinking of lately.

If you stick to the rule that "It's always better to give QUALITY and to actually help the user" then you are actually more into giving the user what he needs.

In the other hand, the client/visitor will feel much more satisfied from your service if you give him what he WANTS (Even if he doesn't really know what's better for him)

What do you think? Let the ideas flow so we can look at this from other perspectives

    Classic marketing mantra: firstly sell them what they want, then lecture them on what they actually need, and finally sell them indeed again that what they need. You keep them happy, they get to trust you, you get to sell them more, etc, so it's a win/win situation.

    People tend to buy what they want before what they need. Who are we to judge? If the product fits your moral and ethical guidelines, give it to them.

    I can only give the benefits. I try to include as many as possible without making people go to sleep, hell who am I kidding they skim my crap anyways.

    Exactly! Our goal is to generate visitors who are very serious in taking those offers that we promoted. Value always wins in this game, which makes your visitors feel satisfied about the offer you are giving him or her.

    In my day job I make a living giving people what they need. They truly hate to get what I offer, but they have to have it. It's nice being so wanted :rolleyes:

    I guess it translates to my internet life. I have better success giving a specific group of people what they have to have, and much less success giving things people ordinarily want.

    Lets just say I ALWAYS put my visitors or buyers before me. I focus on what they want and what they need, and provide them just that, with the priority of their experience or benefit over mine.

    If you were in a one-on-one selling situation, the goal would be to ask enough questions to figure out with the person what it is they want AND need. What's their own best solution.

    On the internet, you have to do that kind of research for the bulk of your market at once, unless you're doing an individualized coaching program.

    Depending on the nature of your product or service, you may have to give them what they desire most, then lead them through the process of discovering what else they need.

    Like I said, though, it depends on the product. If you can use questionnaires or offer different options, it's definitely better to meet the want and need all at once. Then you get a really happy customer who feels their money has been well spent.
