The 5 Types of Websites I Build

First, I want to start with a broad overview of the types of sites I build:

1. Informational Only Sites
2. Product Review Sites
3. Product Sites (Selling Your Own Product)
4. eCommerce Sites
5. Service Sites

Informational Only Sites
These are your "made for adsense" type websites, but in actuality, they give quality information to the visitor - they are just montized with Adsense.

You set them up just like a regular blog, throw some intitial content in there (preferably 30 to 50 posts), get some links (10 to 30 links) and just keep posting content. The way these make money is strictly from adsense. NO AFFILIATE LINKS! But of course have a facebook page, twitter account, and email subscribers!

You just keep posting content targeted to long long long tail keywords - no other link building involved (other than your initial 10 to 30 links to the home page). So over time, you will get more and more authority, and more search traffic, and more adsense clicks.

Product Review Sites

Simple enough right? Write some product reviews and post em and you should be ranking pretty high in no time! NOT....well it depends on the niche. Guys and gals - you can create a niche review site that makes over $1000 per month only using product reviews!

First, you set up it up like a blog. Create a unique home page that targets the keyword, for example:

"baby stroller reviews"

Idk, I just thought of that but it could be any type of product. Try to stay away from electronics unless you think you can compete with cnet, consumerreports, etc. Then you create pages on your site for the different brands of "baby strollers" - if that was what your site is reviewing.

The home page and the "pages" (as in pages in wordpress, not posts) should have internal links to your pages and specific review posts. The goal is to rank #1 for "baby stroller reviews" and have people clicking through your site to find the review they want (increases time on site and decreases bounce rate) - so internal links are critical.

Then, you have your reviews, which are posts in wordpress. Those are specifically targeted to get traffic from searches for the specific product, brand, and model number. For example:

"Fisher-Price Z280 Double Baby Stroller Review"

I made that up, idk if fisher price even makes baby strollers but i'm guessing they do. These posts will get lots of long tail traffic especially if you have a hundred of these.

How do you make money? Well, affiliate links - preferably with a price comparison "plugin". The price comparison should be at the BOTTOM of the post, not at the top. Google doesn't like it when ads are shown above the fold, and an affiliate link is an ad in google's eyes...so just keep it at the bottom of the posts. I get more clicks and more subscribers when I put em at the bottom.

*Note: it works better if people keep buying new products over their lifetime - like fishing stuff for example - I always buy new poles all the time and if there were a site that compared all the poles, and had price comparisons, I would go to that site every time.

Product Sites (Selling Your Own Product)

This is getting long, so I'll keep this short. Anyone can create a product. The majority of my products I sell are digital. ebooks, pdfs, video series, mp3s, apps, and whatever else you can think of that you don't have to have a closet to store the shyt.

*A site with 30 visitors a day can make $500 per month...so how many sites can you make that get 30 visits a day??? lol

Use the membership site to sell videos, ebooks, etc - that's your members area after they made the purchase. Use free search traffic, or better yet, facebook marketing. Get people to sign up to your list, educate them, sell them, education them again if they don't buy, and then sell them again.

Once they are sold the product. Send them Affiliate offers for a year - like links to amazon products that they can use (easy with autoresponders).

The key to selling products is building trust. You can build trust with a free "ecourse" or "video course". This means you need to focus on getting people signed up to your list and teaching them something!

eCommerce Sites

There is only 1 ecommerce site I own and I love working on it because I get to design my own stuff like logos and crap.

I use cafepress.com for that - so it's not really "ecommerce" i guess, you are more of an affiliate, but it is fun and it's cheap! it's like $0 to start one of these...and like my dad always says "anything free is worth saving up for".

You can create your own logos and put it on a bunch of products.
The marketing is the fun part too! No more building links! Use FACEBOOK! Set up a page and promote it to your friends after you have set up a few different designs. People will start to like it and share it and eventually you will be 100% google free....imagine that.

Service Sites
I have 1 service that caters to you guys - internet marketers.

You can start any type of service you want, and with those premium business themes the sites are super simple to get started. I would start with one or 2 different services, find some forums to start promoting and talking to people in and go from there. Facebook and SEO are good for services too if you produce content on a blog.

what are your thoughts on informational sites that are not solely intentional.. i.e. not MFA and trying to beat google but instead provide constant new content that is valuable to the viewer? and maybe create a forum/following etc..

That is exactly what I am talking about with "informational sites". I have a site that has some decent age, about 2.5 years old that, in the last 6 months, I have added 2 posts per week to it and the income went up without building links and the traffic has seen a major boost, plus I can't keep up with the comments on the site!

A forum is a good way to keep people coming back and possibly generate extra income from it via selling ads - but my "informational site" doesn't focus on a niche - It's kinda all over the place as far as topics. It's just that it focuses on internal links and keyword focused, long tail, titles - that's where the traffic comes from.

Very good. Building sites is fun, isn't it! I can't do it to any degree of level but I love using optimize press and creating and building high converting landing pages. I understand using kompozer and a ftp client and actually doing that stuff for me can become addicting sometimes.

Its fun making these sites but it also comes down to getting eyeballs plus how well your call to action converts. Testing, testing, testing

"development environment"? lol, that's the first time I've heard that - not trying to laugh at you, I just don't know what you mean. I use wordpress for all my sites, I like profits theme, thesis, and primepress (free). I use the content authority for all my content needs. I hope that answers the question???

Hmmm...the one that makes the most money! LOL. I like product sites because then I can take a 2 to 3 weeks and make it a "project" instead of an ongoing thing like a blog style site. Also, as far as profit per visitor, my product sites earn the most. But as far as being fun to create, I like my ecommerce thing I have going...it's basically posting some funny stuff on facebook and coming up with new product ideas.

Yeah multiple income sources (and I'm getting into the whole kindle thing so hopefully I can make 1k/mo by june this year with that too), but it's more multiple TRAFFIC sources is what you should strive for. You could have all these different types of sites but if they all rely on Google for traffic, your income can still be gone overnight.

This is a great post. I have some questions:
    1. Isn't it possible to make product reviews with affiliate links in a informational site?
    2. Isn't it possible to collect e mails with an informational site?
    3. By "product review sites" do you mean micro niche websites?
    4. Do your product review sites include only product reviews? Not any informational articles giving value to the readers?
    5. It is said that after Google panda update, review sites can't rank as well as they could in the past. Is it true?
    6. Is it possible to make $1000/m with only one review site?
    7. Do you advise Amazon or Clickbank for a review site?
8.Lastly, I'm a newbie. What do you suggest me, an informational site ora review site?

      7. Do you advise Amazon or Clickbank for a review site?
8.Lastly, I'm a newbie. What do you suggest me, an informational site ora review site?
      1. There's a little grey area between "informational site" and "product review" site. On a product review site, I would have a page filled with internal links to pages that answer specific questions about the products that the site is reviewing - so there would be a bunch of "how to" type posts targeting a specific question. So yes, you can. I would make sure you are not a creating an informational site about ANY TOPIC and then having a page on vacuum cleaner reviews...keep the review site a review site with information, keep an information site just an informational site.

      2. Yes. And I highly recommend it, especially if your informational site has a general theme/niche...you would just have to come up with something to entice your sign ups.

      3. People call them different things. If I were to start a new product review site, I would go to Amazon and find some sort of product that has multiple different brands, and something that is not seasonal. On this site, I would review every product I could - none of my review sites have less than 40 pages...but the entire site is based around that one particular type of product (for example: "tents" or "lawn mowers").

      4. See #1.

      5. False. They can rank just as well as long as you are providing value, and not trying to "sell" every single product you review...there are bad products and it's easy to see which ones those are when you can read the reviews on amazon, buy, or wherever.

      6. Yes, especially if the products you review are in high demand, have a high price, and you get good commissions I have one review site where the average commission is over $10....with AMAZON.

      7. I would never advise Crapbank, but I'm sure it could work - it's just that crapbank products are digital and not a lot of people search for those compared to physical type products. Amazon is good, but I also use CJ and ShareaSale (I use a comparison plugin on my review sites).

      8. Both. Start an informational and a review site. If you have some cash, find a good review writer to write the product reviews for you...you can also find someone to write information type article also. Use Adsense only on the info site, use affiliate products for the review site. Make sure everything you post is quality!

SEO is how you get traffic to the informational and the product review sites, there are other ways to get traffic to the other 3 that usually have a better ROI.

Very true. Took me over 3 years to get to this point.

For newbies, you need extreme FOCUS.

I don't work on more than 2 projects at one time. I write down what I need to do for the day for each project, I focus on that until I'm done, then I move on to what needs to be done the next day. After 6 months, you will get pretty far....But you need to FOCUS.

To use a metaphor, how do you start building a brick wall?......by laying 1 brick of course

This is a great overview. I just never figured out how people build these authority sites so quickly. It seems that most of the value is derived from search rankings. How is that sustainable if the reviews themselves aren't well researched? Or are they?

Who said that the reviews aren't well researched??? Everything you put online should be QUALITY.

          QUALITY over QUANTITY.

A friend of mine and I started a website last march. When we (and when I say "we", I mean HIM, lol) write posts for our site, it typically takes 2 to 5 hours to write a post. Most of the posts are reviews. We research our asses off before we start writing.

Basically, don't post anything that you wouldn't want to share with someone in real life. Don't spend 3 days writing a review, but don't just pull crap out of thin air.

Now, quantity does matter - the more you have out there, typically, the more money you will make...Just please please please don't make the mistake of creating mediocre content.

I liked your tips on getting traffic from Facebook and not depending on google.

I got a large review site on a popular electronics product which was bringing me close to 1000/month. The site had plenty of backlinks and unique content and was ranking on page 1 just below cnet. But in December the ranking in google suddenly dropped to 250+ and the revenue dropped to the range 200/month. May be one of the competitors did some trick. The site still ranks well in Yahoo. So yes... it is important find other source of traffic than depending on crazy google.

That really sucks man, I've had that happen to me and some of my sites all through 2011 with the panda updates. As long as you have QUALITY CONTENT, you are spamming the web with backlinks and instead getting QUALITY BACKLINKS, and the speed of you site is good - then you should be able to get that site back up to the previous levels of revenue.

Sorry to hear that your website was affected by Google updates. However, you did a good thing to build authority kind of site with lots of reviews. If the reviews are good and informative and not overly promotionsal, and if the reviewer is honest to mention the good and the bad points of the product, then people are likely to depend and start trusting your recommendations. That can suddenly increase the popularity of your website.

Do you know that when amazon started its feature of allowing people to post reviews on products and it allowed both positive as well as negative review of products without any restrictions, industry experts thought it was a crazy move. However, it turned out in favor of Amazon in the long run as people now trust those reviews and they know that the reviews are not biased and not just positive ones.

So, if you plan to make a review kind of site then keep the following points in mind:
      1. review lots of products in your niche (both the good and the bad ones, the popular and the lesser known ones). This will make your site an authority in the niche with lots of content and reviews.

      2. have informative reviews and honestly mention the good and the bad points of each product you are reviewing. Don't think mentioning bad points will lower your sales. On the contrary, it can make your site popular and trusted and you can get way more sales of good products this way.

First, thanks for this thread. It is a very well written, concise overview which I think would be very useful for anyone new to IM. Come in, pick one of the 5 and get to work!

Anyway, on what I've quoted, you say 'long long long tail keywords'. Do you have a minimum number of daily searches for keywords to target or no? I'm making a couple of these types of sites now and currently have set my personal threshold for the long tail keywords to target at around 50 per day (from Market samurai, so the #1 google spot should get around 30-50 visitors per day). Should I lower that in your opinion?

      50 searches a day???

So you would only be going after keywords with 1,500 searches per month?

Yes. you should lower that. I go after keywords that have 0 and 12 searches per MONTH. Those are not the only keywords I target, but the majority of keywords are between 78 and 260 searches a month.

It all depends how many variations of the keyword there is too. For example:

"how to start a business with no money" has a lot of variation to it.

You can do one big post on the main keyword, and then a separate post for:

-how to start a plumbing business with no money
-how to start a cleaning business with no money
      etc

But the main keyword "how to start a business with no money" has quite a bit of other long tails that go with it. And with this particular keyword, I would write a big long detailed post on "how to start a business with no money" and then link to my other posts on "plumbing with no money" and "cleaning with no money", etc.

In most cases, with a keyword that gets 1,500 search per month, you will have to more promoting (backlinking) with it.

With an informational site like the ones I talk about, you want to be doing very little backlinking and just focus on creating good quality content and getting natural links over time because your content is so good.

That's also why you want to go for the super long tail keywords because most of the time, you will end up on the front page over time.

Wow...I'll have to go do a bunch more keyword research and find a lot more like this. Do you have a minimum CPC level you target? The CPC for the niche I'm going for right now is between $1 and $3.50 or so for most of the keywords.

Also, would you mind sharing a ball park earnings per month on a site like this? And how much traffic you are getting? I'm just curious what type of income potential this specific method has.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5519464].message }}
        • Profile picture of the author lassy715
I don't look at CPC at all. Of course, if you are in a niche with generally higher CPC, that's great. It sounds like you would be getting anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 per click, but again, don't worry about CPC - worry about getting long tail traffic.

Earnings per month with a site like this? Ummm...it depends on:

          - The niche
          - How many posts you have
          - How old the site is
          - The authority your site has
          ....and on and on.

This is something you will want to work on consistently for YEARS. If you keep posting keyword targeted, quality content, then you will be fine and you will be able to make as much money as you want...literally.

The site that I started that works this way (btw, I started it about 10 months ago) makes about $80 or $90 a month. I know it's not a lot but you have to think long term here...plus, that site gets $.10 clicks.

A friend of mine owns this site - Universe Today

He makes more than $20,000 per month with it using just adsense. I'm not trying to say that you can make that in 5 years, but it's possible to get to a full time income with 1 site like this in a few years if you stick with it.

So it's up to you to put in the work it takes to get to the revenue levels you want to see for yourself.

Is it realistic to expect $5,000 per month after 6 month full time work?

No. It requires an extreme amount of work, blood, sweat and tears to get to even $100/day. FOCUS = SUCCESS

They are proven yes, but what people have to remember is that it is an enormous amount of actual work. I think "newbies" in this business, and especially this forum, see too much "make $14,693.54 in 24 hours" type of stuff.

      They just don't realize that:

      1. there is a learning curve
      2. it takes work
      3. it takes extreme focus (STOP CHASING SHINY OBJECTS)

About your comment, review sites are great because there isn't too much keyword research involved - find the top selling products, write reviews, post them. It's also a good idea to have "how to" and other FAQ type posts on your review site that answer questions about the specific product or the products in general.

      Good Luck!

Yes. I have a couple websites that make money from strictly generating leads for other companies.

With that said, my sites also provide a lot of value to my visitors and my subscribers. You should focus first on your content and make sure it would be something you would "share". Then you can focus on the leads.

What types of back links do you go after? Do you use

I am just wondering, because your plan sounds
doable, but back linking has always been an issue

I use high PR Article Directories, Web 2.0 sites, PostRunner - Which is the keyword academy's guest blogging network (highly recommended), BMR, UAW (for getting links to backlinks), and sometimes I use fiverr for My Article Network Submissions and Article Marketing Robot submissions. I am also testing out backlinksindexer.com.

I also use UAW, MAN, and AMR to get links to my backlinks. All the direct links to my site are done manually with AD's, Web 2.0's and Guest Blogging with Post Runner or if I find a site in my niche where I can do a guest blog.

If you wanna sign up for post runner and use my affiliate link, it would be appreciated I can post a link here, otherwise just google it and you can sign up, it also comes with the forum and training and a lot of other stuff within the keyword academy...I've had a lot of success with it.

There is a 30-day free trial with postrunner/the keyword academy. I also wrote up a quick review - The Keyword Academy Review - Yes, It's Worth The $0 Investment |

Just a thougth. How long do you spend working on each website a week. I have 5 domain names but at the moment only 2 website operational, because that takes up most of my time. Realistically, are all websites working to full capacity to make money, or are there some websites that dont make as much progress as others?

Would be good to know. Thanks.

I work 50+ hours per week on all my sites - others require more attention on a daily or weekly basis than others.

For example, I have a website that generates leads in an industry - I haven't touched the site in probably about a year and it still makes about $600/mo. It has 10 or 12 pages of content that is keyword targeted and when I created the site, I got some initial links to it, then when I posted more content I would schedule out links for months at a time and then I left it alone ever since. Actually I think I did go into the backend of that site a couple months ago to make a design change but that was it.

Now my ecommerce site needs daily attention - I post to twitter, facebook, google+ etc everyday and actually get into the conversations online and that site made over 4 figures for the last 4 months and it keeps growing.

So you have to schedule out your time for each site based on the niche and the type of business you have going. So being organized and staying focused is a MUST.

It sounds like you are willing to "try" it, but put little effort into it...no offense. Review sites work, and they make money. They do need to be updated when new products in your niche come out, so it's not 100% passive, but it's close. Why would you sell the site?...I mean, unless you are looking to retire and already have a bunch of money put away. I have never built a site thinking "I could sell this on flippa for a lot of money". If I were going to sell any site I have, I would call an investment banker and have then look for real companies willing to buy my business...but for me, that's many years down the road.

I guess I have to find sb to write reviews for me, it's just not for me. One small tip for other guys so you don't make the same mistake I did: think about the work you have to put into your business, if you're not interested in it at all - for example you don't like the niche, type of work - a lot of writing, etc., you will have really hard time to get this thing going. Even if you know it can be really profitable. I just like to work on sth that I'm really interested into and I think that majority of you feel the same. For me, outsourcing right now is the only solution, because I don't want to leave this site unfinished. VALUE your time and work efficiently!

    Totally agree.

You got me curious about your cafepress venture. Some time ago I've put a couple of designs into cafepress and left it with hope, that my products will be selling in the marketplace from time to time. It's only 10% margin on their base prices, it' not much but if almost no work is involved, then why not... Guess what? Nothing happened and very few of my products actually appear in cafepress marketplace! They are not that bad, but I wouldn't name them "top quality designs". Can you write a little bit more about your experience with cafepress? What do you sell and what sells best? What kind of earning per month are we talking about and how many hours/day do you spend on promoting your shop (in other words, what's the ROI in comparison to your product and service sites). What strategy do you recommend? Selling products in one niche (for example football and you sell everything connected with it), having a brand (for example 'cute bears' gadgets and clothes or one-product strategy (various designs of tshirts) . I know I have many questions...so I'll really appreciate your reply!
With cafepress, you want to design things for a specific niche, get about a dozen designs up and the website running so people can purchase. Then, you want to find websites to advertise on...it takes some time because you will probably have to negotiate pricing.

You obviously want a fb page and a twitter account and every time you create a new design, you will post it to twitter and facebook. Then, you want to spend a little money promoting your fb page with fb ads.

You want to brand your store with a catchy name. Basically, create cool designs that are in demand and market those designs in whatever ways you can.

It does take up an hour or 2 per day of my time, but it's worth it.

Do you make designs but yourself? And do you use your own domain name or have a "cafepress" domain and don't worry about such details?
I come up with the ideas, I have a designer that creates the actual design.

I use the cafepress domain because I found out that people do trust that domain - when I started the site, I had friends say "oh yeah, I've bought stuff on cafepress before"...that made me realize I didn't need my own domain.

I'm sure you could talk with them about using your own domain, but I have not looked into it.

I've found also another platform to set similar shops - zazzle.com. You can probably spread some of your designs through its marketplace and gain more exposure.
        I designed my own site.

Yeah just looked at zazzle.com, they had very similar traffic numbers so I'm sure that would work very well too - I'll have to look at that.

Lassy, good post here man. I've had some success with review sites but when I build one I always know there is one major risk. That risk is ... conversion. I've made websites that get good traffic but don't convert at all and others with little traffic but convert like crazy.
What is the best way to tell/test if a product will convert or not?

Quantity. Throw as much as you can out there and see what sticks.

I've had better conversions when I actually do longer, more in depth reviews of products, then give people a price comparison online. That way, if they are looking on a website, open another tab to find reviews and try to bypass your aff link, they may find a better price through one of your links....that's just a theory of mine tho.

Also, I always take the 2, 3 or 4 best products (truly best products through your own research), and link to them from other product review pages on my site - I literally say "this is a good product, but I highly recommend getting the [insert product here] instead because...."

Then you will get the visitor off their original search and looking deeper into your site and trusting you more....again, a theory, but I get pretty good results with my review sites and my conversions are not terrible.

Lassy, thank you for this thread. Very informative in how you outline a game plan to follow. I've been reading the forum a lot, and have a few questions that may apply to others as well...

I have some intermediate skill in Flash, blogging, html, SEO. I am not an expert in any of these, but perhaps have enough knowledge to become "advanced" with a few months of dedicated focus to one.

My challenge: I am 100% sure that my future lies in IM. I'm interested in it, I find it fun, and I'm bright enough to make it work once I get experience but...I have a full-time job, plus 3 hours of commuting each day, and so there's 11 hours gone without eating, showering, sleeping, family or breathing yet ...you get the point. So realistically, I think I can work 25 hours/week toward IM right now.

I am contemplating 3 IM sites to start:
        1. I have 25 years experience in my (fulltime) field, in which I sell a service to small business owners. I can develop an e-book that will (anonymously ) advise people how to buy this service from companies like mine -- how to get the best pricing, which add-ons to buy or avoid, how to negotiate with the sales reps, etc. My knowledge could legitimately save a business $1000-5000 per year and give them a better service. I don't see much competition for such a site on the web.

        2. I have a hobby that seems to have many lucrative affiliate products available, but quite high competition in its various niches too. I know I could build a very good site, but is it worth it to go up against so many competitors (some of whom are probably HUGE). Or do I really drill down to a micro-niche?

        3. There is a personal improvement niche that seems underserved. Not sure how much money is in it, but I could probably get on page 1 of Google. My thought is to act as a sort of hub of links and news stories, so that people can come to my site and the go and visit other sites/stories that I'm linking to. Perhaps an Adwords site??

Sorry for the length of my post ...if I've got 25 hours per week, what should my plan be? Focus on just 1 site for 6 months? Try to build sites for 5 or 6 different niches until 2 or 3 start making a little $? Invest in someone's WSO? LONGTERM (YEARS FROM NOW) I WANT PASSIVE INCOME, so I don't mind slow, consistent patient growth now. What would you do given my time constraints. Thank you so much!!

          Thanks!

          1. Is anyone searching for that type of service?...that's the question, there may be a reason nobody else has a service like this (of course, I'm going blind on this since I have no clue what the service is).

          2. There's a reason why niches are competitive - THERES MONEY THERE. Given that fact though, it's also harder to break in. But, a small chunk of a big pie is still a pretty big. (pretty broad answer right? lol)

          3. Your personal improvement site sounds like digg or stumbleupon...so it could work, but why would you want to send people from a search engine, to your site, then to another site? Why not keep them on your site and provide the information they are looking for on YOUR PAGE instead of being a middle man to the search engines?? ...just a thought, not trying to bash your idea

HERE'S MY TAKE ON WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD "CHOOSE TO START":

          What You Like.

If you like sports, start a sports site...but do your best to be the best and focus 100%

If you like dogs, start a dog site....again, focus and provide valuable information that people would want to SHARE.

Things are a lot easier when you are in a niche that you like to talk about, and you have some knowledge in (or you want to gain more knowledge in).

......Then again, my sites are not really "passions", I just think it's fun all around

So I guess go with your gut feeling and choose the 1 thing you would want to do your entire life....then, you can't fail.

boy, that got a little "self-helpy", lol.

      Just use WordPress.

I know HTML and CSS but I can't possible teach someone on a forum like this - I took classes and learned a lot on my own.

I actually think, if you go hard core with one of these, then you will do better online.

I never have 5 things going at once, I have learnt if you have 1 or 2 sites going, and get them cranking you will do much better than 5 things going at once, and trying to keep track of things. Not enough hours in the day to do that.

but to each and their own, seems like you are doing well. NICE!

I do No. 2 which I am still very passionate about.
