Open Source for profit?

Did anyone have any success creating an open source software?

Do people start those projects for profit?

What do you think?

Many times, open source software projects are very profitable.

Although the software download may be free, money is made from installation services and support.

Over the years, I've seen some support fees for open source software that are actually purchased for as much as $250/hour - less if purchased in a package in-advance.

I've also seen installation services as little as $10-$25. I figure they bank on volume; especially when the installation process is relatively quick and easy. Either installation or support can become nice cash flow for many, especially if the price point is set appropriately.

NOTE: With an hourly support rate of $250, it can open the door for others to offer support for a lesser rate.
