Establishing a Reputation

What's the best route for establishing a following?

I'm looking at publishing an ebook on the idea of a book I've long been contemplating writing. The idea is fantastic and should generate great feedback; the issue is it breaks a super important rule: It's too broad. The niche would be personal development.

Is this an impossible goal? Should I just focus on writing a book instead?

I'd really like to have this be published online so I can gather a mailing list and repeat customers for future products, similar to what many people creating WSO's have on this forum. Is that an impossible goal?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Nothing is impossible... Have you researched that nice? Have you got any REALLY new ideas that's gonna make your book stand out?

Also just because you write a book it does not mean you gonna get famous. I suggest you look into Andrew Matthews -the author of Follow your heart -his story about publishing his first book may be very relevant to you.

Just do it man. Set up a Facebook fan page, then buy some Facebook ads and direct them to your fan page, not an outside of Facebook site (people trust Facebook more than any other site) once you have a solid fan base, start working them!

Perhaps find a way to break your idea down into a more specific and smaller niche within the personal development space. Just a way to create a beachfront and get your foot in the door. Once you gain some momentum and start to achieve some credibility towards your name you can begin to expand your horizons and reach into broader areas.

Nothing's impossible but there are a lot of heavy hitters and wannabes when it comes to personal development. Good luck with It!

      Cheers

        Hey Kal,
        Thanks for your response.

I did do some research on the internet and I noticed this idea is completely ignored and, in the best cases, completely misconstrued. So, yep, I do have a fresh idea that really works. I'm not looking for fame - also, I'm not sure if I didn't get my message across, but I was ideally looking to write an ebook. I was seeing if I could avoid writing a book.

        JGWF,
Thanks.. that sounds like a good idea. I'll keep that in mind.

I believe your goal is quite achievable. If the subject of your ebook is "personal development", I would assume that your book may have some chapters or descriptions about the sub-niches that exist under the broad category of personal development. You can expand your monetization efforts based on how well you tie the sub-niches into the broad category that is described in your ebook.

Any book that you write will serve the purpose of helping you establish some authority in your chosen subject, so I would move forward with your goal even if the implementation does not feel perfect; you're still well ahead of others who have no book in circulation!

        Good luck.

Thanks to both of you, Wilton and JROC, for taking the time to respond to my request. It's great to see you guys think this is achievable. As for subniches, I am looking for ways to tie them together but it's a very basic, very overlooked principle that's going to be substantiated with examples from several sub-niches (i.e. weight loss, time management, exercise, learning) to get readers viewing the huge applicability of the simple concept through their lives.

I'll continue looking for ways to make them smaller - but I'd ideally like my first ebook to have most of them to make it a breakthrough book. I really feel like it would either set my reputation or end up making me a clickbank trash dealer. Haha.

        Dave

EDIT: I just wanted to add that I'm still looking for some advice. It'd be fantastic if I could get some practical advice. Thanks to anyone who contributes.
