Anyone Got A Smartphone?

I have just activated a plugin for Wordpress called WPtouch Pro which makes a Smartphone version of your blog so people on the move can access it.

Trouble is, I don't have a Smartphone to look at it myself!

If you have any of these iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, Palm OS and Samsung touch mobile would you look at the blog (in my sig.) and let me know if you see any problems?

It's not a free plugin it costs $39 and simple to activate, but I just want to know if I have made the settings right for all Smartphones.

iPhone 3G S - looks OK, as always with that plugin.

However, I removed it last year from a blog of mine because it didn't display correctly on my wife's Blackberry... (it's true, I didn't check it with newer editions of the plugin and/or Blackberry)

You may have had a mismatch with the version of plugin for that version of Blackberry, and that too is a worry in itself. Many people have got phones which may not be compatible with this version of plugin - just a thought.

Looks fine, if somewhat bland, on the iPad and on my Samsung Intercept. (Cheap phone, but decent features.) It looks nothing like the view that's shown on the iPhone viewer, but that may be because it displays differently in the iPhone browser.

Just plainish looking gray bars that look like a calendar. Title, date and the slug is all that shows, but it's easy to navigate and read. On the phone, there are options at the end of each article to share it or save it to Instapaper.

Hitting the Share Article button brings up options for Twitter, Facebook, email and del.icio.us.

On the iPad, there's an option at the bottom to turn the iPad theme on and off. If you turn it off, it goes to the normal version you see in a browser. If you leave it on, it shows a screen identical to the Android phone, but larger.

Interesting option for a news blog.

        Thanks Paul.

There are differences between certain phones, but I expect as the technology advances in the Smartphones, things will display a lot better for the good folks out there. Let's see what 6 months achieves.

Seems most peoples phones do resolve the blog with this plugin. The coders say they will update free until the end of the version 2x, in my opinion worth paying for. I at first tried a free one from some other coder, and it did not work at all. So much for FREE!

Looks good on my Samsung Galaxy Y Android phone. It's so important to have a functional website for smartphones these days since so many people are using them. It's a trick many people are missing. With technology on the go, website owners must keep up. $39 is a fairly good deal, I'd say, since it comes with the script that automatically redirects smartphone users to the mobile friendly version.

You are so right on that score, so many people are walking around with them looking at websites around my area, and I think the trend must go upwards.

Everyone should have this plugin for their website.

I don't see much future for phones like mine that are not 'smartphones' they will be obsolete soon!

Works perfectly on my BlackBerry Bold and iPhone. Understand your question; as some of my websites don't show properly with BlackBerry's browser. iPhone never seems to have any issues in showing a website.

Might look into this plugin myself, thanks for the tip Tony

      Your quite welcome Steven.

Another thing I did not mention, but having just dropped in on the 'Mobile Forum' where some are advocating setting up a parallel mobile site - there is no need to do that! With this plugin it is taken care of, if someone comes into your site from a Smartphone, the browser is detected and the plugin cuts in and the display on the phone will have the correct format for easy reading.

Apart from that, I was going to say, there is more to it than that. It will also put in advertising between posts for you on the fly - just read this blurb from BraveNewCode site:-

"Adsense Simply add your Adsense credentials and choose where the ads are displayed, and voila! You've got mobile advertising to start generating revenue.
      Admob

Same goes for Admob-- it's incredibly easy to get up and running with ads by Admob with WPtouch Pro.
      Custom Ads

Use a custom ad service? No problem. Simply drop in your ad service JavaScript code and away you go!"

This is like turning a corner and suddenly you are in a new country, a new territory, and you have to deal with it.

I noticed a news report from the UK parliament a couple of days ago, and in between the debates all m.p.'s had their Smartphones out scrolling through them, it is as though they can't live without instant news and other information.

    Hola,

Ah I LOVE that plugin. It takes so much work out of having to do all the formatting yourself and saves you the money that it would have taken to hire a programmer. Although that works for my sites, I still want to make apps though. Two levels of engagement over one is better for me in my book.

Thanks Mollysue. Wow! So many different phones actually are able to view my blog alright! That's one hell of a plugin. I suspect some of the phones are branded ones of the main manufacturers, so what - they work.

(As you say Mollysue, life is not a bed of roses in the UK or Ireland, but look what Big Mike has to put up with in Greece! Not nice at all.)

          Hi,

Landing page looks good on my Nokia ASHA 303 ( supercheap smartphone but a pretty handy one ). Using the mini-opera browser.

When I drilled down on one article, Activism Needed in Croydon ( Emma West) , there are lots and lots of empty spaces to the right side and right below the article.

So whatever promo thumbnails (telescopes I think) you have there, were pushed out right to the end of the bottom corner. Lost of opportunity here because of the large blank space, no one would see the promos.

Think about placing adverts at the end of the article, instead of the ever consistent WP right-side bar.
