5,000 Uniques and $15 a month... Tips Please.

My traffic is about 85 percent organic, 10 percent referral, and the rest direct, all due to my own SEO efforts and people actually sharing the site with friends. I'm sitting at about a 44 percent bounce rate with 3:00 minutes avg time on site.

All sounds good right?

The kicker - the site is just a site I put up funny youtube videos and funny pictures I find. I have Adsense on my right widget, and a 468 60 banner below and above each picture or youtube video. I've tried different types of ads on widget (300x250, skyscraper, etc) but the problem is the sites viewers are such a broad audience, the ads just aren't targeted- I have a terrible CTR.


Any recommendations on what I can do to monetize this site better? Thanks in advance for your help.

(rather not post the url on a public forum cause Im ranking 1st for a targeted low competition keyword that gets 7k exact searches a month which fits the niche of my site)

    Alot of people are blind to adsense when it comes to those sort of websites as they are not targetted traffic.

    If for example you were selling microwaves, then people looking to buy microwaves would end up on your website, if they seen an adsense add providing 50% off microwaves, then they would probably click it.
    People comming to your website are probably just intrested in Lulzcats. So advertisements wouldn't really appeal to them making a low CTR.

    Some websites just dont make much money from adsense as opposed to others.

      Yeah I agree Adsense on a site like this is mostly ignored, but is there any other methods you think would work to monetize a site like this? Or are these sites just useless when it comes to making money?

      I just post funny and amusing YouTube videos and funny pictures I come across. It's not like there aren't tons of other sites doing it I just happen to rank 1st spot for a targeted search with nearly 7k searches so I get good traffic.

    You've got to try other methods of monetizing the site besides Adsense. Whether it's CPA offers, affiliate products, building a list, or whatever, you'll never know what works until you try.

    Even after you find something that works, you should still keep trying other things. You don't just want something that works - you want the option that works best.

      I tried doing Amazon ads but that didn't work at all, and I've used adscend media for CPA but I feel like they don't convert where they claim they convert. Anyone got any suggestions on where to start?

    solado hit the nail on the head... your traffic is most certainly just interested in wasting time... guess the ad blindness on such a random 'funny video' site will be sky-high! your best best will probably be CPA here... split test some generic offers but don't use standard ad placements! make them look like your regular content/news etc... use content locker on your videos... maybe try and rent out some ad space?

    I'd go for CPA + split testing here first though... With those traffic numbers you should do well sooner or later!

    From which country all these traffic coming from ?

    If you have a website where people watch videos , then i suggest you to join some network which have video ads ,, those network will pay you when every time use watch videos provided by them

    You can play sponsored video before the actual video

        1 question pop up in my mind ...

        Do you redirect users to youtube website OR you have video embed code in your own pages ?

        If you have video in your own pages then you can hire a coder to modify your script little so you can popup advertiser video before user watches real video

          Yes its all embedded, but I guarantee that would increase my bounce rate by quite a bit.

    It does make sense that adsense does not work. Sites about funny videos, I would imagine, would not yield to many clicks on adsense ads unfortunately, regardless of how much traffic you get. Even affiliate marketing would not get you much on the site since your traffic consists of diverse sets of people who are mainly looking to waste time. You could try targeted advertizing - if you find a site of a similar niche, you could offer them an ad space on your site and charge per month. You probably won't get much for this, but its better than nothing I guess
