.tv doman name for TV related site?

Hi I am developing a product in a niche relate to broadcast TV. Some of the names I want are taken as .coms, but they are available in .tv. .tv seems like a natural for this but I don't know if it holds up for search engine rankings, etc. Does any one have any opinion on the use of .tv domain names for a TV related product?

Secondly, it seems the .tv domain is $30 more on godaddy than a .com, is this just godaddy, or do .tv domains cost more for some reason?

Thanks, Ed

  • .tv, the TLD for online video. Use this easily reconigzable extension to connect companies and individuals to rich media content.

Yes, Google has an opinion on this.

They've announced openly that three former "national" domain extensions, .tv, .me and .co (originally for Tuvalu, Montenegro and Colombia), because of their widespread international usage, are now treated exactly the same as all the TLD's (.com/.org/.net/.info etc.) for all ranking/SEO purposes.

That may not be so at all for other search engines, though, of course.

.tv names are currently $24.99 per year at Namecheap.

    • It may also not be true for Google despite them saying that. There's a tiny proportion of .co high in search results compared to .com - much smaller than the roughly 1:100 .co domains registered compared to .com.

That said, .tv for anything video/tv related is the only reason to ever consider using .tv, and a good reason to consider using it.

.tv is a great extension for a tv related site. I'd definitely go for it. I like the extension for media related sites and have seen some very creative uses for .tv sites. They rank as well as any domain if you do the SEO.
