I think that this method of finding keyword "ideas" is really useful. I'm sure that Tiffany would be the first one to tell you that you need to research those keywords for profitability, just as you would need to research any ideas that you can come up with, before investing in them.

I do OK selling small infoproducts to 'information seekers' - you just have to research which buttons to press for each particular niche. There's usually always something that you can say or show that makes them feel that buying your infoproduct will be better / faster / more effective etc than spending hours reading repetitive autoblogged crap on the internet.

I agree - I wasn't saying to write about that I was just showing research methods. You weed out from there - it's a good way to get started on "solution based" ideas.

Another would be "how to fix"

- the red ring of death
- a bad relationship
- a wet cell phone
- a toilet
- a laptop screen...etc.

I just found the hickeys (and cankles) funny

While I agree you always have to consider the commercial value of any term/niche you dive into..

I disagree that the hickey niche necessarily is a waste of time. One rule I go by is that if there is human traffic then there is probably some way to make money from it. If there is enough traffic, it is certainly worth a little sampling to see what is what.

Even un-targeted traffic in a lame niche has a value. I wouldn't suggest anyone jumping in headlong though. Everything done online should start with a risk assessment to balance the effort against the potential of profit. If you want to break into property management software from scratch - you will have to apply substantial resources over a long period of time. Even sampling the niche would be a high risk enterprise unless you already have a foothold in this niche. Checking out the hickey niche, and testing the value of it on the other hand could be done with very little risk investment.

Considering the low competition compared to for example "property management software" and the simplicity of setting up something in the hickey niche vs the property niche, I would suggest anyone with a interest, to go ahead and test the niche. Just because there already are a couple of mfa sites up, don't assume that Adsense is your only option.

Obviously, understanding the demographics of the traffic is important, as mentioned you won't make a humongous amount off this traffic.. but you never know what lurks inside the numbers. Test. Test. Test.

On first glimpse one may assume that the client base would be youngsters. On the other hand - they often brandish their hickeys - so is it really kids looking for this info? Maybe it is somewhat embarrassed adults, in a desperate situation, (on a corporate trip, in the wrong bed, with a credit card in their hand)? If it turns out to be youngsters.. try some CPA offers with ringtones, dating, gaming, whathaveyou, that may be able to monetize this traffic a lot better than Adsense. If it is grownups, as Tiff mentioned, maybe selling a cure to their anguish is the way to go. Maybe pregnancy tests. Whatever. Testing, is even easier than building it.

The nr. 1 site for the term has a couple of pages of content. That is a small effort and minimal risk investment to test the market. Something you can realistically build in a day or two. The trick is to balance the effort against the profit potential. I agree you will never make 25000 a month from the hickey traffic :p on the other hand, most people trying to make money online wouldn't be able to handle breaking into such a competitive market as the property management niche (or any other competitive market) in the first place and would be operating on a humongously risky basis.

Anyway, remember when you got your very first hickey? I for one, was pretty proud of it, and wouldn't have wanted a cure if you gave me a pot of gold
