How to Get Rid of Hickeys - A Niche Research Lesson

Hi Warriors!

From time to time, as I'm dabbling in niche research, I'll go to the simple free Google keyword tool and start typing in phrase starters, always checking the box that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms."

I might choose:

"how to buy" or "how to buy a"

Today I did "how to sue" for one of my readers who needed an example of a niche she could build an empire in (she's a law person). She could do a whole series of "how to sue" courses that are specific in nature.

Then I typed in "how to get"

I discovered there's a ton of people needing to know how to get rid of hickeys (hickies, a hickey, etc). LOL! About 74,000 people looking for that one.

This is just an example of how you can sometimes stumble on things. Research shows women are searching for how to get guys a lot, and there's all sorts of how to get over a broken heart searches.

Dig down when you do phrase searches, like this:

The hickey one made me type in "how to get rid of" and that resulted in people wanting to know how to get rid of:

cankles (lol)
mono
herpes
maggots
sty
sunburn
hangover
bruises
ear wax...etc.

All of these are things you could easily put together a report on and create a site to sell these for not a lot of money - think $7 for fast fixes. Put enough together and you have something building.

Another one? Search for "learn how" and get these:

to fly
to knit
to draw
to write
to type
to play guitar

Dig in a little more by typing in "learn how to write" and get:

for kids
in English
a book
an essay
software
songs
articles
grants

There are many ways to get some niche ideas brewing. This is one.

Thank you very much. Sometime ago I have been looking for long tail keywords using Google suggest. However, what I realized was that many of the keywords I was looking for did not appear to get a lot of traffic according to the Google keyword tool.

Thank you for giving me this new method that is completely based on using the google keyword tool. It appears to remove the need to use a software to get the google suggest keywords before going to the google keyword tool.

Most importantly, by starting with a "how to" as you shown, I think that several of the keywords obtained are likely to receive traffic according to google.

Interesting research. However, it may be best for one to carefully research and understand the product/service demographics before "jumping in" and spending a lot of time/money. For example, something tells me that those who are in need of a report on "How to Get Rid of Maggots" may not have a valid credit card at the ready, anxiously ordering via their new ipad, iphone or laptop.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I think that this method of finding keyword "ideas" is really useful. I'm sure that Tiffany would be the first one to tell you that you need to research those keywords for profitability, just as you would need to research any ideas that you can come up with, before investing in them.

These are good tips indeed, and that's the exact way I have came across some profitable sub-niches.
Some of the ones mentioned are good.

However in my experience: I have found out that these type of searches are mostly information seekers, there isn't that need or sense of urgency to spend money in other words.

I like to dig deeper in "already proven buyer niches" the ones people are just waiting to hand over their money to you!, that's Offcourse when you give them exactly what they are looking for plus more!

There is for example " How to kiss a girl" it has a very high search volume but not too many buyers
Mainly because these are teenagers, or at least I hope, LOL!

Sounds like your sales copy needs a shot in the arm ;-)

I do OK selling small infoproducts to 'information seekers' - you just have to research which buttons to press for each particular niche. There's usually always something that you can say or show that makes them feel that buying your infoproduct will be better / faster / more effective etc than spending hours reading repetitive autoblogged crap on the internet.

I found quite an evergreen niche two weeks ago in "medical marijuana". What triggered it? I saw a story on the news and thought, wow, that's a good one!

You know you've found a good niche when you can set up a Wordpress blog and do some keyword research, outsource a few articles, and a few days later you are ranked and getting traffic for those keywords.

As far as monetizing this niche, right now it's all about Adsense. That may be the only way to monetize a niche like this, but that can be quite lucrative in and of itself.

How to get rid of hickeys, even with a lot of search volume would be a total waste of time.

    Reason?

    1. Theres no commercial viability.
    2. Your customer profile sucks.

Understanding the importance of being able to identify these two factors ahead of time will save you a LOT of wasted time and money.

How can I identify commercial viability?

Take a look at this. Google's search results for "how to get rid of hickeys"

how to get rid of hickeys - Google Search

    1. There's no PPC advertising.
    2. The top 3 results arent selling anything, they're just information based sites stuffed with ads.

This means = no commercial viability. Dont do it!

How can I identify my customer profile?

You wont always be able to, but with a bit of thought and common sense, anyone typing in "how to get rid of hickeys" will most likely be someone young, which in my experience are just looking for free stuff.

There will always be exceptions to this rule, but these are the basic guidelines I stick to.

To further demonstrate my point, here are two separate search phrases.

    1. how to get rid of hickeys
    2. property management software

Which one of those two do you think has the potential to make $25,000 a month?

I agree - I wasn't saying to write about that I was just showing research methods. You weed out from there - it's a good way to get started on "solution based" ideas.

Another would be "how to fix"

      - the red ring of death
      - a bad relationship
      - a wet cell phone
      - a toilet
      - a laptop screen...etc.

I just found the hickeys (and cankles) funny

While I agree you always have to consider the commercial value of any term/niche you dive into..

I disagree that the hickey niche necessarily is a waste of time. One rule I go by is that if there is human traffic then there is probably some way to make money from it. If there is enough traffic, it is certainly worth a little sampling to see what is what.

Even un-targeted traffic in a lame niche has a value. I wouldn't suggest anyone jumping in headlong though. Everything done online should start with a risk assessment to balance the effort against the potential of profit. If you want to break into property management software from scratch - you will have to apply substantial resources over a long period of time. Even sampling the niche would be a high risk enterprise unless you already have a foothold in this niche. Checking out the hickey niche, and testing the value of it on the other hand could be done with very little risk investment.

Considering the low competition compared to for example "property management software" and the simplicity of setting up something in the hickey niche vs the property niche, I would suggest anyone with a interest, to go ahead and test the niche. Just because there already are a couple of mfa sites up, don't assume that Adsense is your only option.

Obviously, understanding the demographics of the traffic is important, as mentioned you won't make a humongous amount off this traffic.. but you never know what lurks inside the numbers. Test. Test. Test.

On first glimpse one may assume that the client base would be youngsters. On the other hand - they often brandish their hickeys - so is it really kids looking for this info? Maybe it is somewhat embarrassed adults, in a desperate situation, (on a corporate trip, in the wrong bed, with a credit card in their hand)? If it turns out to be youngsters.. try some CPA offers with ringtones, dating, gaming, whathaveyou, that may be able to monetize this traffic a lot better than Adsense. If it is grownups, as Tiff mentioned, maybe selling a cure to their anguish is the way to go. Maybe pregnancy tests. Whatever. Testing, is even easier than building it.

The nr. 1 site for the term has a couple of pages of content. That is a small effort and minimal risk investment to test the market. Something you can realistically build in a day or two. The trick is to balance the effort against the profit potential. I agree you will never make 25000 a month from the hickey traffic :p on the other hand, most people trying to make money online wouldn't be able to handle breaking into such a competitive market as the property management niche (or any other competitive market) in the first place and would be operating on a humongously risky basis.

Anyway, remember when you got your very first hickey? I for one, was pretty proud of it, and wouldn't have wanted a cure if you gave me a pot of gold

There are niche gems just waiting to be mined and what never ceases to amaze me is the shear number and types of searches being done. I never would have guessed, for instance, that anyone would do any kind of internet search on how to get rid of maggots. Really? I would just be tempted to say, "Take out the trash" (or bury the dead animal). Is it that hard, really? "Oh, Frances, lookie here. I got a maggot thingy in my festering leg wound. How do I get rid of this thing? What? No way! I'm not using MY fingers. Where did you put the tweezers?"

    I gotta be missing something.

But then again, I do remember going by a pig processing plant some years ago. Whoa! The smell of maggots a good mile from the plant was overpowering to the point that eating in local restaurants was futile. Locals did not seem to mind (or notice) the smell.

Love the ideas on this thread, though!
