How to Make Something of My Blog?

Hi -

I have a blog that I write... I've been writing here and there for some 5 years on it, but only have about 220 posts. Most of the posts are longish - 500-2000 words.

Traffic is not so great - I get like 150 visits per day, all from G.

The thing is, I never really intended for this blog to be an IM site (to make money). It was always just someplace to vent.

So... my question is... What should I do with it?

I figure there has got to be some way to build on what I already have and turn it into something that can generate a little coinage from.

I've got no list. Just a little traffic and a good bit of content.

I think I'm not seeing the forest through the trees...

Any action steps you think I should take?

Thanks for helping me think....

You mean it's a personal blog with personal articles? I guess you could just turn it into something else. The domain has age and has been indexed for a while. That's always a good start. If the domain name is similar or reminds you of a certain niche it's even better.

Depending on what niche you are in, are there products you can offer on your blog on an affiliate basis? If so it may be worthwhile starting to build a list, by giving away free information on the niche.

It may be worth building up the traffic by doing some back linking such as article marketing, guest posting, quality blog comments (not spam but relevent and informative comments which add something to the post) etc etc etc.

If it's a personal blog there still may be products you can recommend... or if nothing else try adsense.

Keep going. Try writing more frequently with shorter articles. You will notice the most highly trafficked blogs - post 5 or more articles daily.

Hopefully your are using Wordpress and you can bring on other authors, if you can't think of enough to write about.

Put an ad out for other writers and give them a percentage if they agree to post articles everyday.

The more you post the more recognition you will receive. Because you have been adding orginal content to your site for 5 years, you blog has some major pull with the search engines, but you need to continually keep producing content in order to see the results.

If you are not on self hosted Wordpress, you should defiantly make the switch in the near future. This will increase your blogging effect dramatically.

The other thing you will want to do right away is give away something of value for free to your visitors in exchange for their subscription. This could be something as easy as a how to video or the 3 biggest secrets that your customers need to know.

If you need help you can always find another warrior to help you get this part of it going for you.

Once you start building your list, keep thinking of ways to give your subscribers added value. If how focus on how you can help them, the money and success will come naturally.

You should also be giving out as much value as you can in blog posts as well. This will bring you many more readers and many more subscribers.

    Cheers,
    Joshua

Even though it sounds like kind of a hodge-podge, do you talk about something specific that you could turn into an affiliate opportunity? For example, if you talk about the giant zit that popped up before a big date, you could become an affiliate for a skin care product. Or, if you talk about your love of windsurfing, you could become an affiliate for a company that sells windsurfing products (I'm being really random here, but I'm hoping the point is coming across!)

The best thing you've got going for you now is trust. You've been blogging for awhile, and you haven't tried to shove any sales pitches down your readers' throats. That alone puts you one step ahead of most of the bloggers out there

This has my mind going.... exactly what I was after.

One of the problems I have is finding things to position and sell. The blog is mostly about news of the day, politics, cultural commentary, etc (that's why I didn't post the name or url).

People come and listen to me rant about this or that. They don't really have "problems" per se...

So...I went to Amazon and checked out some book lists. I know that there are news-ish topics that sell - that people are interested in.

Still.... in our world, we typically find a situation where people need to be helped, then help. :-) That seems hard to do with this.

I'm scouring CB and various networks looking for something that would appeal to my readers...to no avail.

So I'm here looking for a new direction...

    Hmmm.

Is there some sort of premium content you can offer for a paid subscription? alternatively, you could do the odd review of a book etc and then link to it.

    Just random ideas.

Initially, I'd try integrating some social media promotion into the site. If you have some traffic, then people are reading... but maybe you just don't have enough people aware that the blog exists.

Promoting it through rss etc and registering with social sites such as technorati will help syndicate your content to more eyeballs.

Once you increase awareness and traffic, then you are building an asset. More traffic and you can sell ad space. Given your topic, then perhaps ad space would be better than making small coin from amazon.

You can also comment on similar blogs etc.

At this stage, getting the word out would be my #1 priority.

Let me know if you need further ideas.

Yeah, I think you're right. So I'm cruising along at 150 uniques a day. I'm thinking that needs to be 1000.

      So.... I came for a plan and I got a goal. :-)

The goal: Boost traffic to get off the flat line and to 1000.

The plan: Hmmmmm. 10 comments to blogs per day, Tweet more (stuck at 1850 follows), write 1-2 posts per day every day.

I figure if I follow that plan I'll see traffic increase.

      Then re-evaluate my monitization.

      What do you think?

Do you submit articles as well?

Have you registered to social sites and book mark sites?

Use tweets to direct traffic to the blog.

Start looking at relevant keywords for future posts etc.

Combine the articles into a coherent ebook and sell it on Amazon Kindle. Leverage the book into more traffic for your blog. Monetize your blog. It will become self supporting.

Placing Adsense ads on your blog can bring you passive income. You can also sell ad space, in the sidebar of your blog, for others to run their ads.

If you can offer a service, advertize that in your blog.

I understand you don't want to share your niche with us, but it would be much more helpful if you told us what the niche is that you are in.

If I were you, I would start building a list. Simply sign up for an autoresponder (either Aweber, which is great, or a free one, such as Mailchimp) and include a simple opt-in form on your blog.

If you are getting 150 UVs per day, you can get some nice number of steady opt-ins daily. Then you can promote something related to your list. Think Amazon, CPA, or Clickbank.

You can also promote those three right on the blog, along with building a list at the same time.

One last thing you can do is have an AdSense code on your site and make money this way.

I suggest you to maximize the presence of your blog. Continue creating good articles and promote it to gain more traffic. The presence of social media is definitely a great help. I should say that having a blog like yours is a good start

    Good luck (y)

Yeah for 5 years worth of work, 150 hits per day isn't much. You should strive to put your marketing efforts on steriods. Include article marketing, Youtube, and also post on a relevant forum (related to your niche) everyday.

I think the very first thing to do is build a list.

Offer something for free about your niche (report, ebook, video, audio...).

Maybe can insert some banner ads to promote some clickbank products, or google adsense to make some cash out of it.

    Hope it helps :-)
