I'm pretty well-versed on Twitter as well and I'm 99% sure there's no way to send a direct message to all your followers at once. And honestly, I hope there never is. It would be like throwing open the gates for spammers.

Why don't you just tweet about the freebie you're offering for opt-in? You may get others who aren't currently following you as well. You could send it out every day for a few days to make sure plenty of people see it.

For new followers, you could set up an auto-welcome message in Tweetlater that mentions the freebie. But I have to say, I recently deactivated mine because of increasing complaints about auto-welcome messages in the Twitterstream in recent weeks.

  Although I have no doubt that you are well versed in the fine art of Twittering. There is definitely applications that allow you to send DM's to all your followers at once. The most notable of which is TweetManager.

Twitter has a throttle on their API, so if you had a large number of followers it wouldn't work. And if you don't have a lot of followers, there's no point to it.

Sending lots of direct messages will get you flagged and eventually banned when they figure out what you're doing. So you'd be better off to just send a message every five minutes or so.

The best way to do this sort of thing is with Imacro (free version for firefox). As an example, I wrote an Imacro script to add a bunch of twitter friends. Imacro is well worth the time it takes to learn as you can automate a lot of your mundane web tasks with it. It would be fairly easy to write a task that would send a direct message to a list of people with a time interval. You could just start it and leave the machine running.

My quick view:

Agree with KenReno - automation does have a valid part to play, especially for certain repetitive tasks, such as sending welcome messages.

However, some automated tools end up getting banned because of mis-use.
It's not the tool itself that's always the problem, it's the mindset of the person applying it's use...

If you've hung around Twitter for any length of time you'll notice than many tweeters intensely dislike any kind of automatic message generation.

The basic concept behind Twitter and most social media sites is that they are personal and interactive. Auto posting tweets or DM's will be noticed and probably mentioned, from your perspective, in a less than complimentary tone.

Doing this--when and if available--may also cost you followers.

Those that benefit most from using Twitter seem to be involved, helpful and personable. Occasionally, say every 20 or 30 updates, dropping in a commercial message doesn't bother most folks.

We're all used to TV programs, sometimes providing useful content, bracketed by commercials.

I think there is a max number of direct messages you can send per day, something like 200 is a guess of mine as I had tweet later running to autorespond to my followers and twitter told me I had reached my max direct message limit.

but if I created a program to even just send out the max amount of direct messages 200 it would still save me the time of doing it manually

  that's what the guy at tweetlater told me as well, but my dm's were stopped after 215 on 1 occasion and the reason twitter gave me was that I had maxxed the number of dm's.

People really have got no right to directly sell to people via twitter, do it the correct way;build rapport and drop the occasional link in here and there only if it's relevant.

Twitter seems to be pretty good at stopping the spammers and related. Lost count how many suspended accounts I've seen. The big one now seems to be living off some one else name. Lost count how many Jack Canfields and Joe Vitales there are on twitter, least they try, most don't seem to make it.

I'm not trying to sell anything to anyone on twitter, all I'm trying to do is give them some good, free content and get them to optin to my list.

I never said I was selling anything

my followers get tweets from me almost a dozen times a day and typically it's something about the industry that I'm in or a random note of something that I think everyone could get use out of.

example: today I told people about pandora.com and cookthink.com

2 really cool sites if you're into music and cooking.

I'm not on twitter to spam, I just want my followers to see what I have to offer them.......for free

  It allows you to send a message to up to 1000 of your followers.
  
  1000 DM is twitter's own guidline, if they wanted you to be able to
  send only 50 direct messages per day, there daily limit would be 50

  IMO sending a direct message to someone who CHOSE to follow you,
  and who can un-follow you at ANY time, is not "spam".
  
  The content of your messages will determine if you are flagged/reported,
  and will also affect who follows/un-follows you.
  
  If you're sending "Hey buy my product" messages...well that doesn't work
  in any advertising medium.
  
  I've been sending direct messages to my followers, who I hope are all
  marketers since they chose to follow me, and not had any problems.

  I know it's not a large number, but I have 1500+ followers @KennethReno,
  and it would be a nightmare to have to welcome each person, or send

The inconsistency in the number of DM's could be from the fact that they've increased capacity (or whatever it's called) several times -- depending on when it happened and when the info was given.

I'm also pretty sure I heard they've adjusted the settings back to previous levels at least once, when they were expecting a spike in the number of users that day (maybe election day?).

Leave a tweet to one of your blog posts that provide really good content... Talk about the content in your free report but don't give readers the entire picture; at the end of the blog post have a small opt-in box if they want all the details in the report.

I am not sure if you can do this. The only think I can think of is you can get software that sends a DM when they follow you you can send them to a squeeze page.

Maybe just change your web address on your profile to a squeeze page and send tweets leading people there pretty hardcore for a few days.

Maybe use multiple URL shortening services so you can have like 4 or 5 different addys all leading them to your squeeze page.

Personally I would post tweets out and see how many people optin organically. You can also set bit.ly links so you can track how many people actually look at the optin page, and can see how many of them have opted in or not.

Automatic software have their place but what they can't do is test and track.

this way will be slower but you won't annoy anyone or more importantly get removed.

I would also put it in your DM when people follow you if you have an automatic one set up.

This is an excellent thread due to the wealth of information. I'm in the same position as glasshalfful. I'm thinking of using Tweet Later just for sending this message to all new followers:

I have been using bit.ly to tweet lately and found it to be cool.

Bit.ly tracking is not effective is it?

When I see the admin stats and the bit.ly stats they both differ drastically.

I guess bit.ly stats are not that effective.

I've been using Tweet Lately (now Social Oomph) for about three weeks and I've also used Bit.ly. I couldn't do enough with Bit.ly, hence my move and I also found similar stat' discrepancies to you. I've been told Bit.ly doesn't make full use of the Twitter API, which may explain the discrepancies but I'd now recommend you try Social Oomph. It's very powerful.

On the copywriting front, you may be interested in looking up John Carlton at simplewritingsystem dot com. He's been called the top copywriter by many people I've been in contact with.

  Technically, since you followed a Tweep, its not SPAM when they DM you, because you have basically given them permission to DM you any time.
  
  However, I would say a slim margin of Twitter users actually read their DM box because it is full of SPATTER, the very kind of messages you are looking to send. There is so much SPATTER in Twitter now, the DM option of communication is pretty much a waste of time.

Hello,

I also have researched such and found that there exists none that can send direct messages to all users or even selected users owing to the limit. Not everyone is interested in using dms to send spam messages. Some like me need it to send updates to selected twitter followers.

@gelizzy88 if your app still exists, I'll like to give it a try.
