Is January the worst month for Amazon affiliates?

Just curious... After all the Black Friday and Xmas buying frenzy, is January the natural 'dip' month for Amazon sales for you as an affiliate?

It's the biggest decline in sales (after shopping season), but no, it's not the worst month of the year.

I don't know, maybe June or July.. Depends on which products you're promoting.

This is my first January making money as an Amazon affiliate but I've often heard that it's a very slow month.

I'm actually doing better in January than I did in October through December, however most of my sales are from 1 product. All other sales have been well down.

My clicks (and of course, orders) dropped quite a bit in January, from 3-digit total orders the past couple of months to 15 so far this month LOL, but I'm not surprised, even myself, I haven't bought any 'non-essentials' this month hehe.

I'd say late July, early August are worst in North America.

Maybe the opposite on the other side of the world?

Nah, we get a double hit - Chrimbo comes with summertime, so it kind of evens itself out.

i'm actually doing good this month.

made almost $1700 in December with only one site not maxed out traffic-wise.

i expected sales to fall way off.

as of right now i'm on pace for $800-$950 in January. again from one site so i'd say that's pretty good.

most of the sales in December were not for the product i was promoting but for DVD's, Barby-related stuff, shoes, etc

edit: basically i've had about the same amount of product link clicks as i did in December, just buyers were more active once they arrived last month

No that I can tell. I chalk it up to the post holiday hangover. I assume most people have overspent during the holidays and now have put the brakes on any sort of ancillary spending.

Not for me anyway... I'm doing almost the same as December.

I did make a load of tweaks, but I'm still surprised by those numbers.

Jan. is bad for alot of things. Rest. slow down, malls slow down. Internet sales slow down. People do not want to spend money, what it is good for is new years resolutions. But thats almost over too.

    • Yea I've noticed a big drop in sales this month with my Amazon sites. The traffic has dipped slightly, but not that much, but the conversions are definitely down. Must be people just window shopping because they have no money left after Xmas

It has a lot to do with what products you are promoting, from what I have noticed. Some people seem to do exceptionally well in Jan - winter related products etc. However, yeah, most people seem to be out of liquid cash after the holidays etc, so a lot of people find themselves with less sales in January

btw guys how much traffic are you getting and what conversion do you guys get.. just curious to know because everybody talks about clicks and orders but nobody mentions how much traffic they are getting and how many of them click whether they buy or not..

Conversion rate is certainly down on my end. Income wise - based on current stats, I'm expecting a 40% dip from December's income. I couldn't really pinpoint on how bad/good this month is because my ranking has been jumping almost every week so traffic hasn't been that consistent.

That all depend upon the product you sale. All the months are good for a evergreen product and trending topics gets there momentum for few time and then fade out.

  • Profile picture of the author Bill_Z
Although I just started building Amazon sites I would imagine it would depend on the products you are writing about. However overall I'm sure sales are down in Jan from Dec as most people don't buy much having spent alot during Christmas.

No doubt that they must be some influence in sales while new year and Christmas just pass for the last month and everyone need to planning for their money again in 2012. It will be recover next month.

It's one of my worst months because I mostly focus on the Black Friday to Christmas period.

It depends on what you're promoting though. A friend of mine promotes almost exclusively exercise related products (P90X and other Beachbody programs, exercise machines etc) and January is one of his best months.

There is no one 'best' or 'worst' month - it varies.

I guess it depends what niche you're in as Hamida said. I always experience a dip in January only because December is such as good month due to the Holiday sales... the summer months are definitely the lowest.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5440221].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Targeted Traffic
it's basically a low time for many businesses because most people are still recovering from the Holiday expenses
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5440271].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author matt5409
It's niche dependent, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. Of course, when compared to the holiday season, it's going to be lower, but Jan-Oct is no different.

You think if you're selling fitness equipment you're going to be better off in a few months? January is the time for this - as I said - niche dependent.

Mine are down so it's a slower month for me too.

Part of the reason is that I'm also building sites back up after getting hacked back in November -- that sucks.

So far in January I have made more than in December, with same traffic amount.

I guess it comes down to what items are involved.

My earnings drop from $3000 to $30 this january. It's probably the worst month for me.

    Nov - 250 | Dec - 3000 | Jan - just 30 bucks so far

This is actually my best month so far!

I'm up to $1,568 so far... gunning for the big $2k! It's gonna be close, only 5 days left.

And most of this is from 1 site.

I expect it to drop off in Feb... but I've other sites waiting in the wings.
