Do you sleep at night?

by Cybria
82 replies
Lately I've had so many ideas in my head and so many things to do that I find it hard to hit the off switch at bed time...not only that but it seems that people in my mastermind group have the same problem. Someone is always popping into the group chat on skype at all hours to post some nugget of info or start some discussion. It's easy to experience information overload in IM even without your own ideas coming it the mix! So I ask, how do you people sleep at night?

    Cybria,

My official end of day activity is to write my to do list for the next day......then I force myself to switch off.....by reading or watching a movie...

However I do record all those ideas that do pop up in a small pocket notebook...

    Hope that helps...

    Chris

I think we have all been there. You come up with an idea and you are lying there thinking about all the possibilities and you sometimes wish you didn't even have to go to sleep because you just want to get started on things.

It's happened to me plenty of times!

But it's a good problem to have. To be THAT passionate about your job is a wonderful thing. I don't think too many doctors fall to sleep dreaming about the sick patients they are going to have to examine the next day.

What you need to learn to do is switch off. It can be hard though. Often the harder you try NOT to think about something the more you actually think about it. Either try and stop thinking all together and just focus on your breathing OR think about something entirely different... something that is boring and will quickly drain your passion.

Either that or get some good sleeping pills. One of the better sleeping pills I have ever used is BEER. If I have a beer and don't follow it up with a second one... it's good night Irene!

    I live a 27 hour day.

By that I mean I stay awake for ~18 hours, then sleep for ~9 hours. So the time I wake up/go to sleep changes each day. It doesn't work for most people, but I love it. I only go to sleep when I'm tired, and I only wake up when I'm not. It works perfectly for me

A lot of times I have a hard time shutting my mind down to go to sleep. Last night I was so geeked up on a new product and funnel that I only slept about three hours. I'm sure I'll pay for that later.

I often jump up in the middle of the night to jot down a brilliant idea. A few of them still seem brilliant in the morning.

I have to fight the urge to keep running ideas through my head when I should be sleeping. I try to read 30 minutes of fiction right before I go to bed instead of reading marketing or business books. It helps my mind switch gears.

I agree with the warriors here who say write things down. For me, I need to get the ideas out of my head and when I do, I feel peace.

I read every night and that takes me away into my murder mystery books. When I'm reading, I don't think about what has to be done tomorrow because I've already written it down and I'm too concerned about who the murderer is (in my book).

I've had problems sleeping too. These two things work well for me - writing stuff down and reading.

I've also found that doing just a few minutes of Yoga - meditating works wonders. You would be surprised how relaxing it is to take 5 minutes before going to bed and sitting in silence. When your mind starts to wander, stop it and try not to think about anything. It's hard. If you have a happy place - something that is peaceful, even if it is a non-existent place, maybe a tropical location with the soft sound of a waterfall, a pristine white sandy beach with a low roar of the ocean, then concentrate on those sounds and surroundings.

It takes 7-8 hours of sleep for me to be productive the next day. When I don't get the 7-8 hours of sleep, I don't function at full capacity.

I hope you get some sleep.

You need to work with a schedule, meaning that you work at day , in the end you write down things to do for tomoror and you compliment yourself for good job that you done today, it is very important and has physocological effect, as in, "good job , finished for today, see you tomorrow. "It will make it easier for you to focus on the fact that the day is over. If you will constantly try to force yourself to sleep , thoughts like: i can do this right now , get up! will continue to bother you, because you haven't made closer for that same day.

I feel like that often! There are just too many ideas and exciting prospects flying around my head that I can't sleep. I sort of want to sleep because I know I'll feel tired all the next day but I just want to go and get started on a new project! I suppose it's better than being up all night worried about something.

I often have trouble sleeping when ideas are flowing through my head, what I've found to be effective is keeping a pen and notepad by the bed and writing down your ideas as they stream to you, I then can usually go to sleep. For me it lessens the anxiety of thinking I will miss out on acting on a great idea.

Not well at all actually - the brain just didn't want to stop thinking on new "great ideas" while I just want to fall asleep. The online IM job has some good and bad sides. The sleeping problem is one of the bad ones. I did quit my offline job more than 12 years ago, so I'm know that I'm talking about.

Unfortunately I can't suggest any really working solution because nothing is working for me personally. The only was to solve this problem is to dramatically change your way of life...

Personally, that's not a problem for me. I'm sleep at 11:30 and I wake up at around 7:00. Then I hit the coffee pick some banjo and off I am to the world of IM. Getting away every day helps keep my head clear and helps me not burn out.

Funny you should ask that. I got on such a productive streak last night that I didn't go to bed until 4:30 am. In my case I was so into what I was doing that I lost track of time. I tend to work in spurts, so I don't like to shut down when things are rolling. I don't really think this is such a good way as doing a little each day so that I'm more consistent. I use my iPhone notes program to capture ideas all the time, so it's usually not that that keeps me awake. It's more about working on a project and getting so involved that I don't want to stop.

I'm really tired today. I also noted I'm not nearly as productive either.

    Hope this helps.

I'm so used to loading information in that nothing keeps me awake when I am tired. Of course, I always make at least an hour a day for some outdoor exercise with my dog - the sun and fresh air help keep me regulated. Shut down at a specific time and either kick back and watch tv or lay down and read a book.

I don't agree with taking sleeping pills. There's too many ways they can have side-effects that aren't going to be friendly in the long run.

Here are some key components on how to learn how to control your thoughts in an instance like yours.

-If you have mind chatter when you go to bed you can rarely sleep. The key skill is to train yourself to the point where you can focus on external things so that you don´t have any mind chatter. When you are fully present, there is "nothing" between your two ears, besides total silence.

-Have you clear working hours; make a list of what you want to get done this day, and focus on your main priorities until they are finished.

-If you are confused, you are not productive. Discipline yourself to the point where you know what´s most important to you right now, and solely focus on this one thing. By all the information out there, it´s easy to get overloaded and it is what happens to most people. The more goal oriented, and more importantly objective you are, the more present you will be. The more present you are the more stuff you will get done and the better results you will produce.

Don´t get overwhelmed by everybody´s emergencies.. Focus on your own priorities first.

Nice to know I'm not the only one doing this

My partner can tell when it's happening, and asks me "what are you working on now?". Apparently I throw off sparks LOL.

Sometimes I have to get up and take paper and pen into the bathroom and write a couple of pages of notes. Then I can tell the brain firmly that it's all noted down and will be dealt with in the morning.

THomas edison, once said, sleep is a waist of time. And that we do not need 8 hours sleep each night. He proved this by writing a paper on this and practiced cat napping or what is called power naps by todays standard. (where you sleep for short periods throughout the day and night)

I have actually tried this, and his technique of bearing drops.

This is weird, but it works. When thomas edison had a problem, he would go to sleep with ball bearings in his hand, the moment he feel asleep he would be actually asleep for about 1-2 seconds, before the ball bearings would drop and hit the floor waking him up. Yes, his subconscious in those 1-2 seconds was awake and helped him solve his next problem he was having.

This sounds crazy, but I have tried, this and it works insanely well. Do not ask me why, it just does, taps into your inner mind and subconscious.

Have your pen and paper ready and get ready.

I actually tried this a few weeks back, even though I was asleep for 2 or so seconds, I had a dream that I thought lasted about 1-2 hours. Simply amazing. Thomas edison was one smart cookie.

For anyone skeptical. I urge you to try this, the results are quite interesting.

Do you sleep in the same room that you work in? I used to, and struggled to sleep. Now I work in a different room and keep my bedroom purely for the activity of sleeping (well, unless my girlfriend is visiting). This distinction really helps my body know it's time to sleep.

  • I cannot count how many nights I wake up in the wee hours (4 am or so) and my brain starts racing with business-related ideas. So many in fact that I cannot go back to sleep.

I know exactly what you mean. Welcome to the entrepreneurial world my friend.

John Reese once described this, as your true marketing mind. Once you learn how your mind works, and the times of the days that best suit you, you can make the most of it, and learn to earn more money.

I am not a morning person but, that is for sure. I know that much. LOL

  • Read fiction last thing at night. It forces me to concentrate on the story, and the brain eventually shuts down all the other lines of thinking.

Reading non-fiction is usually detrimental to me trying to get to sleep, especially anything even vaguely business related.

    Ha sleep.

It's funny you mention that coy 5 letter word.

I just had a dream that consisted of me speaking with a group of individuals at some type of convention about my list and IM strategies. Maybe it's foreshadowing something?

I need more sleep but rarely get it. There was another post in WF that talked about tricking your mind into believing you only have 10 minutes to rest before you have to get up (when you really have 8 hours) but I guess my mind is to smart for that. =)

I've tried herbal teas, natural sleep aids, you name it....no to avail. I chalk it up to being passionate about what I do. =)

Hah! I know what you mean.

Someone should do a case study on an IMer and effective sleeping habits. I'd opt in to that!

A lot of people gauge how hard they're working by the amount of time spent. But honestly, super focused time is much more important. Concentration and productivity should be more of a virtue than "oh man I grind 18 hours a day"

Yeah, some people manage wit less then 4 hours of sleep . Thats incredible in my eyes cause i haven't been able to find the perfect number of hours that made me go : "YESS, thats the right amount, i feel awesome".But , still, i envy those who manage with 3-4 hours, and feel great. You actually get to live more : - )

People should sleep around 6-8hours/day. I can't seems make it to 2-4hours. If I dont have enough sleep on the night, it only makes my sleep time much longer on the next day.

I work really hard throughout the day and there's no additional energy usually at the end of the day so I have no other option than to fall asleep. I also like to job every other day, I usually run 6 miles, that helps me with falling asleep, as well.

When I'm tired I go off to sleep real quick generally 10pm and up at 4am. If I am excited about an event the next day my mind gets into that race mode and sleep doesn't happen. I hate that but what are you going to do?

I usually get a minimum of 8 hours. Every once in awhile, maybe 5. But lately I've been sleeping for 8 hours with some interruptions from my kiddos.

Sometimes it's a good idea to stop reading everything for a few days and let your subconscience process everything that you have already taken on board. And have you can celled a few of the less useful newsletters that arrive in your inbox every day?

    Kind regards,

    John

At the moment sleep is a nightmare for me. A nice oxymoron!

My mind does overtime and I can rarely get to sleep.

Quite often I read motivation books in bed and sometimes that sees me getting up to put things into action, even at 5am! I got up to write a report after reading Think & Grow Rich early in the morning.

Not only that, I have stabbing impulses all day to put things into action - even those which I don't particularly want to do or even if I see no future in doing. I can only free myself of it after I've executed. I'm halfway writing a book now just for the sake of getting the demon out of my head. I always think there's something magical in impulse ideas though so we'll see how it pans out!

Sometimes I find it hard to sleep if I'm particularly excited about some new ideas I've thought up and can't wait to implement them the next day but generally I sleep well knowing that my business is running on autopilot behind the scenes .
