Directory submissions a waste of time & money

I have recently been asked to submit a 'Fashion' site to several paid Directories. Not having posted to them before I was wondering if anyone has gained a significant boost in their google ranking by doing so. Personally I would rather pay to have quality backlinks built for a site.

Anyone had good or bad experiences I can draw on please.

Generally I find the value in directory submission is in creating a complete and consistent brand presence on the web (as far as the well known directories go, anyway). The boost in traffic will likely be minimal, and depending on the directory, you might not see any real significant page rank increase. But, I still think it's a worthwhile activity, simply from a brand building point of view.

Did you pay them and they did not posted your website?

The site has been posted on the directories. Just can't see the value.

I haven't noticed a significant difference in Google rankings from just directories alone. Some of my highest ranking sites haven't been submitted to very many directories.

we are finding more value in going to the ezine webmasters, trade journals, guest blogging, article sydication directories honed in for our niches. That is alot better than spamming directories and hoping someone will pick you up.

You should go for more targeted eyeballs, not just hope and pray for them.

    Hope this makes sense.
