Multiple Websites or Authority site?

Hey guys,
I'm looking to start my own company. I've been working as a web designer / developer / SEO for a while now and finally decided to take a next step.
My question is, in your opinion, should I create 1 authority site / brand name and cover all the services OR should I just pick out few EMD's for targeted keywords and build few web sites?

    Hi Tolyz,

Personally I would favor the Authority site option. It becomes easier to manage and control everything from one site and keeps it simpler.

    Regards

    Chris

Do both. Have your main authority site and your satellite sites that target keywords linking back to the authority site.

If you have to pick one, go with the authority site because it gives you more credibility and leverage to do other things with it.

Great advice - cover both of your tracks. After all your smaller niche or satellite sites can be outsourced as your income grows. Who know your satellite sites could become huge over time too!

      I agree.

I have done this in the pass. It works pretty good. Just make sure you go private on your other smaller sites, so you don't get nailed with cross linking. It's ok to crosslink a few, if it makes sense. But, the link will be more important if it is on a unique c-class ip, nameserver, and domain.

Concentrating all your energy in one big, authority website is indeed the way to go.

Both where you can. but if you are going for one of them an authority website is better than multiple normal or subnormal ones. it will certainly require less work and be more focused, thus faster and better results. Then you can go around building mroe websites and boosting them

    Best of Luck

It will be advisable to have a mixture of both....

esp after panda changes , the EMD is not as powerful as before but can be used to lead to authority sites, and one thing though for sure is the authority sites with social media interaction is going to be there for a long time to come...

I would build and focus on one authority site at the beginning. That is for two reasons. One is that authority sites are worth much more than small sites and I believe they last longer even if Google changes the game. The second reason is, you should learn what it takes to build a successful business on one thing. I would take you much less, since you would be focused only on one thing.

Then after the authority site is in a good shaper, you can build a couple of small sites that would help you to boost traffic, sales, or whatever your aim would be. You would know exactly what to do because you would make all the mistakes on the first authority sites and the end result would be faster and more targeted regarding your goal.

That's how I see it. You can build 1,000 small sites, but if you don't have a core thing like an authority site where you would build a personal brand or just brand, it would be much harder to keep up with the changes.

I don't know how many people would agree with me, but when you look at the big companies it's all about brand and exposer. Only then they use small targeted businesses to boost what they already have.

In this scenario I would go for 1 site for all your topics.
I would also do some really deep keyword research and analysis to target low competition one.

If you spread those topics among many different sites you will have to do the same tasks many times.
If you have only one website you are focusing only on one.

    Most important thing: PageRank flow
If you have only one website and you are building backlinks to different webpages and have internal linking done well, PR from your backlinks is flowing to other webpages on your website, and your homepage PageRank in increasing.

you will reach a successful point more quickly with multiple niche sites, so if you just want quick hitters than bring in some dough, this will be your best bet

    HOWEVER

if you want to build a sustainable business, focus on delivering consistent, unique content via a larger site. this could just be a bigger niche. the best thing though, is you can grow it - you'll love working on it and have less to manage over time. social is becoming entwined with search, and you cant maintain a twitter/facebook page for every niche site. so consider this.

the authority site gets my vote every time.

The good think about small sites is they're easy, cheap, and you know pretty quickly if you have a winner or not. If you are truly thinking long term though, authority all the way.

I personally build mini authority sites now and then expand the winners.
