I just gotta share this with you guys (it isn't just my picture).

About a month ago, I had a unique opportunity; I was asked to write a column about Internet Marketing for my local newspaper, which will run every Friday. My first column was just published today, and I already had a business contact me about it.

But, more importantly, there are a couple of lessons I'd like to share with you, as well as a picture of what I look like in real life (you may rest easy now, as I'm sure that mystery has been consuming your life. )

First, here's the column: Businesses need a mobile website to compete

There are two lessons IMers can get from this:

1) Mobile websites aren't just for small businesses. We could benefit from them too. Take a look at your traffic logs and see what percentage of your users are trying to access your website from a mobile device. That's how many potential customers you're losing out on.

2) Newspapers rock for syndication. My column was automatically tweeted by a user with over 14,600 followers. Given my newspaper's credibility (I think they've been around since 1888), and relationships with other media outlets, the possibilities to get that article syndicated are endless.

I'm pretty excited about this opportunity, and I really hope I end up helping a lot of businesses increase their bottom-line. That's what this is all about for me. I love helping people, and if my advice helps just a few business increase profits (so they can hire more employees), then it'll be worth it.

Just thought I'd share that with you guys. Would love to hear your feedback, and I hope this has been helpful to you.

    That's really cool.

It would be fantastic to get an article in the newspaper. Talk about exposure.

That's awesome Joshua, congratulations. This is definately food for thought. I love the offline world, there is so much less competition..

Brilliant. The mind boggles at the possibilities that can open up by having such a column...

Hmmmmnnn reaffirms an idea I have for my niche. I enjoy seeing success from others, as it lets me know I'm not just 'dreaming'. Action is what's needed from me, but as said hearing of success is reaffirming.

    Thanks for sharing

Congrats on the success. Personally, I don't see the big deal with mobile websites. All websites looks good on my phone and navigation is easier. I understand mobile sites are a bit easier to read but most phones should be able to handle a regular website with a double click and Zoom function that comes with most phones.

With that said, I'm sure there's something I'm not understanding with mobile websites.

I'm glad that you got the positive exposure for your business. I know about the power about mobile marketing, and i think it's something that all online business owners can do too, along with QR codes. The offlline marketing section of this forum provides great tips on offering mobile marketing services to clients.

    That really is awesome.

Maybe it isn't even that hard to get such an opportunity, newspapers like free unique and original content as much as anyone else.

If that fits your business just cold calling your local newspaper and asking if you can run such a column doesn't cost anything.

    • Good on you for lining up a newspaper deal. That can work out well.

I think you have to be careful about making statements like these, though...

Mobile websites aren't just for small businesses. We could benefit from them too. Take a look at your traffic logs and see what percentage of your users are trying to access your website from a mobile device. That's how many potential customers you're losing out on.

It's certainly not true across the board. I have years of stats on my ecommerce sites and I can tell exactly if they came from a mobile device and what OS. As a result, I know that *not* having a mobile site hasn't hurt my business at all. My site displays fine on iPhone and iPad, and while I haven't checked Android, probably there too.

There's another upside to not having a mobile site: Getting the full site means the user isn't frustratingly limited to the few menu options many mobile sites offer.

The problem with your sweeping mobile site statements is that they make you sound like you're selling mobile sites -- are you? With such a great opportunity to build credibility, tread carefully.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. But in general, it's better to try to optimize your website for as many users as possible, including mobile users.

And yes, I am selling mobile website design services, among other things, but only to businesses in my local area. I'm fully aware of the problems that arise from sounding self-promotional, and my newspaper is too. Their one requirement is that the columns can not be self-promotional in nature.

But really, that's not what it's about for me. Thanks for your input.

I think that the content of your article should be outside of
the discussion in this thread. The most important line of your
article was "Joshua Rigley is an Internet marketing consultant.
He may be contacted at joshuarigley@gmail.com"

I doubt you were trying to impress Warriors with the
information in the article. But you were sharing a little
talked about way of marketing your business. The point
is that you got some exposure that can skyrocket your
    credibility. Way to Go!

    And thanks for the inspiration.

    OMG - It's Kelso! LMAO.

Congratulations Joshua. Newspaper writing can be fun. Way before the internet I was part owner of a company in a small historical gaming town. We did a small newspaper and I loved every minute of it. The networking was awesome. Of course there was no advice on mobile anything - or even websites, so the connections were all brick and mortar. Got a hella load of free meals at the local businesses.

Your advice in the column is really helpful, too - especially in a smaller area where a lot of people don't even really understand online much, let alone mobile. Looks to me as if you have an awesome setup for yourself. Have a great time and run with it. Be sure and come back and share links to your column again. That was a worthwhile read.........even though I only really clicked to see the pic.

You were kidding when you made this statement or not

IMO if you have a restaurant or takeaway or any other biz that requires a phone call to book or order then a mobile option is vital or, in time you will just lose out on all that extra biz..

Many websites e commerce or not can take forever to load in a smart phone, chances are the prospect just gives up in the end and moves on..

For the sake of a simple bit of code and a few mobile friendly pages why not offer the option..

Um, it is a real email bro. I think they prefer to have my personal contact information, and I'm pretty sure my newspaper would require that anyway. But yeah, getting a real website and all that stuff is in the works. Thanks for your thoughts.

we got a free spread in our local paper for sponsoring a couple move their goods, their house burnt down, and we helped them move into their new home and furniture that someone gave them worth like 50k. insane. There are still good people out there in teh world. But when they did a piece we got lots of extra traffic and sales and all it cost was a few hundred out of our pocket.

When I asked the director how much ad placement was, he said about $600 . So we got a good ad, worth $600 for a few hundred. And helped a couple in need. WIN WIN.

Gotta think outside the box sometimes and help others. Gotta give to receive I think.
