    You don't give much info but I'd say forget that list as you'll probably be wasting your time. Maybe you want to take the advice you're offering in your sig and build a new list. Only this time stay "connected" with them.

      Thanks travlinguy , I will consider your advice , but I wish if there is another opinion because it is a large list and it is very hard to gain same again .

        Simply do a broadcast explaining why you haven't been in touch with them. Offer a gift. Do a followup a week or so later. Stay with it as you eliminate dead subs.

          I agree with this idea. Telling the customer why you did not keep up with them and giving them gifts is a great way to rebuild customer trust. Another thing you could do if you want to clean the list is ask them to sign up for your other lists. (I've seen this done.I am still out on the idea. I feel if they are on a list why ask them to re-sign up. Having said that, people do it.)

    I would email then something like this, "I'm sorry I haven't emailed you for .... There has been a lot of things going on and the projects I've been working on are so time consuming... I would like to change this and give you this special report for free, because you stayed on my list..."

    You sure need to change it, but this is just an idea. Then see what the response is. If the list is gone, build another one like travlinguy suggests.

    Like the comments above just explain why, be honest and share some good info going forward, Im in the same boat I have lists that I have neglected.

    Share some good stuff with them and start emailing regular

    Its what Im doing moving forward

    I'd make a "Free Event" out of this... for the first week, I'd give something cool, awesome, and free daily! I'd email everyday to get the opens coming in.

    First email I'd explain why you haven't been around and mailing... highlight list specific projects, and things that happened over this year that your list could connect with, and understand... lastly, explain that this is the kick off week to an amazing content driven newsletter! Giving them something cool each day...

    Your goal needs to be OPENS. An Immediate Cool and helpful character. (I know this is you.. but I still want you to invasion the character portrayed by the reader, and make sure it's exactly what you want it to be)

    Get Opens... Opens mean activity... Even if you get a crap ton of unsubscribes... this is good, because you have OPENS coming in...this will revitalize the list!

    Think catchy, cool headlines that target curiosity.. So even if people don't know/remember you, you'll get opens, and the opportunity to have another
    first impression!

    You mentioned it was a large list.

    If it were 50,000 originally and you sent out an email with an incentive, and resulting from that you had a modest 10% stay on, you'd still have 5,000 people on there, whis is a darn good start for any list IMO. A lot of marketers would kill for a 5,000 email list and most never achieve it.

    So to summarize what have been said :
    1) Contact the list with agood reason for not contacting them for last period , and with a good reason and/or a free product to convince them to stay with you
    2) Email them frequently with free offers , the aim here to get much opens even if they unsubscribe from the list
    3) Appear to them with cool an helpful character , and with cool headlines that triggers curiosity

      You got it man. you roll with that you'll be fine... ideally have your reason for not connecting enough be niche specific. For example, I once took a month off from mailing due to a family death as well as I was recovering from knee surgery.

      I don't want to debbie down my list with a death story... so I told them that I had been rehabbing my knee due to some kid taking my legs out on a thunder dunk! (told the story, humor, made light of the situation) This was all 100% true btw. Don't bs your list... they are smart and can read through it.

      and preparing for the upcoming season of training! (Basketball Niche) I then made the lesson learned about how injuries occur to 100% of athletes, and you can bitch and whine, or you can deal with it... but since I took a month off from you.. I want you to have a little something that I put together for you while I was rehabbing... In this free report... yadayadayada...

        One thing I haven't seen mentioned explicitly...

        If it truly has been a long time since you contacted this list, be prepared for a lot of bounces from bad email addresses. People change providers, dump spam-plagued emails, change jobs, etc.

        Depending on how long it's been, be prepared to lose over half of the list to this.

        If you are using a service like aweber, you may want to give them a heads-up before emailing so they don't mistake list cleaning for spamming in the event of too many unsubscribes or spam complaints.

          Nice Catch John... couldn't agree more.. you WANT action out of your list. Your biggest fear is no action at all.. Contact a weber, and give them a heads up. Email often as you can (I email daily with my list) and you expect 1 of three things...

          An Open and stay
          An Open and unsubscribe
          A Bounce

          THOSE are winners bc you clean out the junk/reconnect. You do not want unopens (which you will get a crap ton)

          But just keep firing out MUST Open emails, with good content/gifts, and
          you'll reconnect with a good portion!

    If you want to salvage the emails that are there that you can. Then let them know.
    Write a blast that tells them that you are sorry you neglected them that you have a great free bonus for them for resubscribing through a link and if they do not want to see you no more encourage them to click the unsubscribe button
