Aweber Email Subscription Question..!!!??? =]

Hey guys!!

I am venturing into email marketing and had a few really GREAT ideas that I'd really like to go with, however I'm not quite sure if they're possible...

I've emailed Aweber about them though I have yet to hear back, I'd like to continue my work but I can't until I know the answers, so I figured I'd ask here and see what I could find out

This is what I'd like to do with my email marketing endeavours...

I plan on marketing and promoting a single email opt-in, so in a sense - one (overall) list. However, once someone new signs up to my list - I'm confused as to which is better, a single opt-in or a double opt-in.

QUESTION #1: Single opt-in, or double opt-in... which is better?

After they have confirmed their subscription (or haven't) the 2nd or 1st newsletter would then be the welcome email of course. However, I intend on making mine a little differently.

For my welcome email, I'd like to welcome them but then also give them an option. I feel as though I would be able to engage and entertain my subscribers alot more (thus keeping them subscribed) if I narrow down the content I deliver to them based off of their needs. So what I had in mind was, after they confirm their subscription and are welcomed, I wanted to give them the option of signing up to one of a few 'specialized' lists based on their needs.

Now, I understand that I don't want to confuse and annoy my subscribers with this - in fact I feel it would do the opposite. If this is possible to do (I'm not even sure) - it will give them the choice to recieve valid information related to their needs.

Allow me to try and clarify even more please... I'll use a similar example that isn't exactly my own :p - Let's say I have a site and email list based in the online dating niche. I offer people an incentive to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex by signing into my list. Then, once they're on my list (male and female alike) there would be an option for the men to get more tailored advice on how to become attractive to the opposite sex and the same goes for women.

So my question is...

QUESTION #2: Is it possible to have ONE email opt-in, then branch my list into sub-lists from within the first email newsletter they recieve (or... after the double opt-in?)?

That is all, two main questions and I would greatly appreciate anyone who can offer some words of advice. I hope I translated my thinking so that it somewhat made sense, haha!

Take care,

-Bre

You are making it too complicated. I think most subscribers won't fill out a form again to get unto a sub-list.

Why not have the options on what type of info they want on the FIRST signup form? For example, if they are signing up for online dating advice, why not an option where they select if they are a man or a woman. When they submit the form, there should be a script that will subscribe them to a correct list based on their selection. You can find a programmer to do it for $50 or less.

    Bre,

I wouldn't necessarily ask your subscribers to join the other lists. If you are using an intelligent autoresponder such as Aweber, you can segment your list based on actions people take.

You can segment your list based on:
    • Who opened (or didn't open) a specific message
    • Who clicked a certain link in a specific email
    • What products they bought and how much they spent
    • What pages subscribers visited on your website
    • Location or region based on IP address
    • Custom information collected at signup like age & gender

You can read more about this over on the Aweber site:
Subscriber Segmenting - Deliver targeted relevant emails

This is a MUCH better way of doing things. Although you can segment based on custom information you collect at signup I still recommend the only information you ask from your customers at signup is their email address -- nothing more. This will give you the highest number of subscribers.

In regards to single optin vs double option, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally I use single optin now for most of my lists. The reason being that you obviously get a lot more subscribers this way. Some argue that the quality of subscribers are not as great with single optin since you will get people entering fake email addresses and the like. But if you are using a service like Aweber, even if you have a single optin list, Aweber still makes all those email addresses that look suspicious confirm before they are added to your list.

For buyers lists I almost always use single optin because I am getting the email address they purchased with which I know is not going to be fake.
