Hi Aurelius,

I use JaguarPC . They give good service. I host my reseller accounts there and formerly my VPS. Good comparable prices on semi and dedicated servers.

Hi. I have experience with dedicated servers from several ISPs. 1and1 are great if you can put up with Plesk as the control panel.

I use nothing but LiquidWeb also. Good company and support is quick and effective. Managed servers.

One thing though... When getting a LiquidWeb server, always check for their current specials at WebHostingTalk Forum. LiquidWeb always has a sticky post there with the current specials. Might as well save some money when you can.

Definitely! I got a great VPS package and saved around $15 a month. I think I found my special at Digital point.

With dedicated Servers, you really do get what you pay for.

I use one and one but would say that their customer service has plummeted recently, on the upside they are reasonably priced, as are their domain registration prices.

Yeah, I'll have to second that. I've had a dedicated server with LiquidWeb for 3-4 years now, and I have nothing but good things to say about them.

Excellent choice. I have had my dedicated server with them for over two years now.

In this time, I have never suffered MAJOR down time. I think the worst in 2 years was about 25 minutes - only once.

Support is top notch. Their help desk always responds to me within 15 minutes and are very good at spotting and resolving issues, as well as installing server stuff as I need it.

Recommendation - unless you are good with servers, get the fully managed package.

Mike

Check out Mosso.com - True cloud hosting that will scale with you. 100.00/mo gives you a nice base, then you just pay .25 for additional GBs

Dedicated boxes are old school. Scalable, clustered hosting is the way to go these days and Mosso is leading the way.

Similar in some ways to S3 but with all the capabilities of a linux or windows box. In fact, you can run PHP and ASP in the same folder.

It's tied into RackSpace so you know it's solid.

I've been with a lot of the companies mentioned here and wasn't happy with them. Except for a few, like Rackspace, they're competing on budget pricing too hard, and end up staffing their data centers with cheap low level techs at night, only getting bandwidth from cheap carriers... asking for problems.

I ended up with SoftLayer Technologies, Inc. , where I now spend over $1000/month to run my sites... the most advanced control panel in the dedicated hosting business, multiple data centers located around the country (and you can choose where you want your servers), virtaul LANs and virtual dedicated racks that can span all those data centers, dual private/public networks on two NICs in each server with VPN access...

Check them out.

Mike, thanks for your feedback on that. I've already signed up with liquidweb..

Quad core, 2gb memory, 2x120GB hdd, cpanel @ $254 /month.

Now I'm ditching hostgator...not the best choice for resource intensive scripts like Fantasos.

Paying $179/mo for quad core Opterons, 4GB memory, 250GB SATA drives @ Softlayer... with no monthly contract... FYI

Oh, LW are managed, that costs more! I don't like it though; I don't want even my web host to have access to my customers' personal data, or to my website code.

Managed is for those, such as myself, who know enough about server operations to be dangerous

Or for those who can't afford to hire a staff to do it for them.

Companies like LiquidWeb have been around long enough to research on any problems of the nature you refer to - problems with people accessing data and so forth.

Also, do you have any idea how many people have access to your personal data on the web at any given moment? A decent and determined hacker can do a ton of damage if they hack your server. With LW's managed solution, they consistently monitor for this and are always updating security, etc. If left up to me - and those who want to save the extra money - that would be WAY worse than having their techs in my server.

WELL worth the extra $$ each month

Mike

Edit: BTW Dan - managed or not, whoever owns the server you lease from always has access to your server - at least all the different hosts I have used did. Even the dedicated ones. If you are on their "pipe" and enough spam complaints come in, they can and DO simply log into your server and suspend the site(s) causing the issue. They need to protect their assests too...

Thanks

Mike,

on the LiquidWeb website, it shows that all dedicated servers come with "Full Managed Hosting Solutions"

I guess it comes with most or even all the servers?

They would have to restart the system to boot into a console they have access to in order to access any data on the server. Without doing this, they can't log in, they don't have the passwords (or even the account name, as I don't allow root logins at all).

I wasn't worried about someone learning something about me (heck, I put that all right out on my sites), I'm worried about entry level tech support having access to my databases with customer billing information, for example. (And yes, I store billing information in a PCI DSS compliant environment, where restricting access is a legal requirement.)

No argument from me that if you don't have server management and security experience (a specialized skillset most people don't need or want to learn), managed is necessary for you.

Thanks
