Any input/ideas on how to diffarentiate your website and content from BIG players like About.com?

About.com, Wikipedia, WikiHow, WikiAnswers etc. etc. and a lot more
great websites

all provides great information in different styles and methods.

And Google is being better and better at organizing all the world's information.

So why should someone visit my website and use the content I provide?

I mean do you have any inputs to share on how little publishers could differentiate themselves from big publishers?

    Because people are interested in what you say and how you say it. The best differentiation is be yourself. Find your personality and build upon it. Wikipedia, About, WikiHow, WikiAnsweres are all about information. But your website should be about you. People follow you because they like what you give them. The content, training, ideas, thoughts, friendship...

    And the money the websites earn is a different number what you should aim at first :-)

    My advice is to be yourself and feel good about the site (do everything to be happy with it). No one else would do the same website as you do.

    I agree with Samuel.

    Also, people LOVE to hear personal experiences.
    So, if you can make your Articles more personal, sharing your real experiences about the Topic, will make people listen very quickly.

    For example, if someone posts a poorly written topic:
    "hey! my adsense earningz suddenly droped!"

    People with the same experience or problem will stop to read and hear what the person has to say, because the Topic aims at exactly the same "problem" the person was searching about.

    Effective 'on page' marketing is about positioning yourself
    against your competitors.

    So it depends what market you are in.

    It's not a good strategy to look at everyone as a competitor.

    What is your market?
    Who are the market leaders?

    These are the first questions to ask and what you will
    be differentiating from.

      Here in Houston there is a small boutique next to a major department store. The boutique does just one thing, and does it really, really well-- far better than the department store.

    The small publishers can extract information from authentic sources and
    present them in a different way as compared to how these big players do.

    While doing this small publishers should present the information in a new and attractive manner.

    If you can get everything at Walmart why do people go to convenience stores? Convenience. In and out and to the point.

      First off, forget about the assorted wiki sites. They are mainly online encyclopedias.

      Let's look at About.com for a minute. At this stage in their evolution, About isn't really A website anymore. It's a collection of around 400 websites under a common umbrella. Each site is a subdomain under the About.com TLD.

      While a collection that big has some obvious advantages when it comes to SEO, that wasn't the question.

      Each 'guide' still has to differentiate themselves from every other site on the same topic. They do that with the content and voice they present, along with the added content they choose to include. You have the very same opportunity.

      There's a reason people will stay glued to Fox News or CNN or MSNBC or whatever rather than simply scanning the news wires. It's in the voice and choice of content within their purview.
