How do you STOP eBook Priacy?

Warriors, do you have any suggestion to stop eBook piracy?

I know this question has been asked many times but seriously before I launch my next eBook I want a way to protect my intellectual property rights. This benefits both your readers and you.

The reaosn for this thread is really more of a rant. Recently searching my email address on google I came across a familar title...the title of an ebook I wrote a while back about youtube SEO.

Clicking on it I realized it was the ENTIRE eBook on Scribd. What was worse is there was 284 views already registered! Now I decided to look closer and so searched the title of the eBook and found it all over those blackhat forums being shared.

One thread even had close to 200 Thanks which speaks volume of the # of people profiting from the information. The problem with this is it saturates the market for a product they did not pay.

It's just frustrating.

In terms to prevent this in the future do you think it's advisable to go with a "No Refund Policy"

Sure this might reduce conversion but at least in the long run you might make bigger profit. A lot of these Pirates buy, refund and redistribute. My thoughts is by discouraging them from doing so with a no refund policy it would deter a lot of such activity.

Don't even try. It's not worth it. Your e-book is going to get pirated no matter what. Has happened to me a couple of times and I don't really mind. Most of the guys wouldn't have bought it anyway.

Yes that's the general go but taking a look at the magnitude of such event makes you think tiwce at the possibilities.

My estimations are about 1000 copies have been distributed. It's a disservice to the actual buyers and also a huge loss in profit.

Then why don't you just read the previous answers?

You're not going to get any new answers since the last time people took the time to give them.

Honestly it was partially a RANT partially a question. Also this might motivate or incentive someone to find a solution knowing there's a market for it.

Indeed there are some situations where it's best to consult the past post which is usually what I try to do in exception to this situation.

Can't really stop it but I tend to set up a google alert for the product name so every time it comes up in discussions on the net, I get an email to check it out.

        Hello,

Something that comes to my mind is instead of making your product in ebook form...could you create a website that contains the content of your ebook...then have purchasers login to access the content...

Wishlist has a Wordpress plugin to protect the content. It's not free but it works well.

This probably won't completely eliminate the theft but it may reduce it...

I don't think there is anyway to completely eliminate this because it's in digital form...

Hard copy books get passed around to...but once you purchase a hard copy it is yours. You can do whatever you want with it...

You can give it to friends...tell them to pass it on...you can even resell something in hard back. People resell hardbacks on ebay, flea markets and yard sales...

So it is a downside of digital media...however with digital media it gives even the little guy a chance to create a product and sell it...

I would venture to guess and I am guessing here because I've never written a hard copy book...that the process of writing it and have it actually printed are much greater than it is with an ebook...

        So it's not all bad...

That burns me up too but to date there is no fool proof way to prevent piracy. Any effort to obliterate leeches will inadvertently cause hassles for your regular paying customers. It's a raw deal but we must anticipate a certain amount of leakage as a cost of doing business.

Personally, I always lock my pdfs and digitally sign them. This is why I prefer Adobe Acrobat to any other pdf creator. Of course this doesn't prevent a determined pirate but it places a hamper on the run of the mill cut-and-pasters. Since Scribd won't accept locked pdfs the pirate would have to find some other way to post it.

As for file sharing sites, I've tried all kinds of unlock keys, registration and security. It was ALWAYS more trouble than its worth because the only effective solutions required the file be in .exe format. Then I had to worry about alienating my MAC users.

It's a battle that merchants have been waging since the first brontosaurus was stolen. "How to keep people from stealing my wares?"

They probably wouldn't have bought it! Look at how many people take up the free offers on Amazon. I think the best way to look upon it is advertising. If they like what they see and appreciate your work they might buy your next one. It has more credibility and worth than a freebie because they know they shouldn't have it.

Very true. You need to concentrate on your customers not the people who won't buy it.

People who value your work want to give you your dues and alot will recommend to others (who are prepared to pay) if they think you have offered a great product. If they can't read it where they want then the chances of them buying again from you and the possibilities of recommendation are lowered.

I programmed a special kind of menu onto a fitness pdf for the wife so you could quickly jump to different exercises rather than her getting frustrated scrolling down as it didn't have a Table of Contents (worth it to keep your wife happy! ). She was delighted with it. The file was originally 'secured' but I found a freely available pdf cracker to remove the security.

Basically I wouldn't bother with the security as it won't be worth it. I wouldn't restrict the use of the file because you will infuriate your customers. Forget about these sharing sites as the people are on there because they are not prepared to pay anyway.

I have wrote 3 Ebooks and all of them were shared without me knowing, you cannot really stop it.
The best way is to at least get something back by adding an affiliate link or link to your website in the Ebook.

Impossible to stop... think of it like this... sure you lose money from not selling it, but if you have affiliate links inside you might still make a few bucks that way... it seems to be very viral right? Better to give it away and make money as an affiliate.

We have thought of ways, they just don't work. I use ebook compiler. Does not keep people from being able to read it, just because they can't copy and paste does not mean they can't take it, They just have to hire someone for five bucks to type it out is all.

Im telling you it can not be done, if someone wants something they will get it. You can make it harder but when I was into cracking software and such, nothing stopped me except maybe it took more time to do it is all.

I wrote an ebook about it, called "Don't Get Mad - Get Even"
(It's no longer on sale, but I might make a WSO on it in a
few weeks or months, depending on how busy I am).

In a nutshell, my philosophy on this is simple.

You can focus on the audience that's willing and ready to pay
for the value you provide, which is a group that won't steal
your work EVEN IF they knew it was a free download from a file-
sharing site... and profit from delivering ever more value to
    them.

Or you can waste time and effort trying to keep your work out
of the hands of pirates, thieves and clueless folks who won't
ever be your 'buying' audience - except under the most unusual
    circs.

For every "successful" effort to protect a digital product,
I'm sure there are far more "successful" thieves who are
laughing themselves silly at the thought that they've fooled
    you.

The trick is in having the last laugh.

    THAT's what my ebook taught

    All success
