Marketing tip for travel-related sites

If you've got a travel site then here's a tip that may be of use to you...

I set up a travel site last year for a destination I had been to and uploaded a number of my vacation snaps to Flickr so I could include a gallery of them on my site.

I'm no expert when it comes to photography - they're just standard photos that I uploaded and tagged with relevant keywords.

However since then I have had a surprising number of emails from other high quality travel websites asking for permission to use various pictures of mine. I give them permission as long as they link back to my site as the "source" of these pictures.

Now while this technique hasn't lead to a *huge* number of backlinks, there are two real benefits here:

1) Firstly, I don't really do anything. I didn't realise this would happen and people come to *me* asking to use the pictures so it is a hands-free way to build links to my travel site.

2) Every request I have had so far is from a really good-quality ("authority") site rather than some junk site. Not only are we therefore getting links from a "good" neighbourhood in Google's eyes, but of course the link is also "in context" which makes it even more powerful.

Give it a try - you might be surprised with the results :-)

All the best,
Richard
