Hi guys...

I need some advice badly!

I needed to scrub my HD, it was running slow after 3 years (Mac) so I decided to rent some room at Dropbox (DB from now on), and bought 100GB for $20/Mos.

Friday I uploaded 58GB of files and assorted other crap (PLR anyone?) to DB then spent some time moving around a few files and folders on DB as well as starting new folders... just getting all info in to better shape on DB than it had been on the drive and ready for downloading back to the Mac once it was back from the laundry :}.

So I wiped the HD and called it a night... 58GB takes a long time to upload. But before bed, I went to DB to take a look.... NO FILES!!!

Absolutely no sign of the upload... 2 years of everything Gone.

I'm rather proud of myself for not losing it then and there. I immediately wrote support not thinking anyone would be home at this late hour on Friday. Much to their credit, I heard back in 15 minutes.

Since then, there have been 6 round trip emails and responses. If anyone wants to see them I'd be glad to send a copy.

The gist of the emails was that I was wrong... they said I had not uploaded anything to the account all day with assurances that they checked the log. The rest of the correspondence was mostly them telling me I was full of s**t. No one had loaded to that account and that's that. I was very polite up until last night when in my last email I fairly lost it at the support guy (same one through all of this). I ended the email with suggesting (quite strongly) that I was the customer and I was tired of having them insinuate I was lying.

Now here is the really interesting part; just for grins, I started to look back in the logs (that they provide the account) and found a pretty representative sample of my 1-20-12 upload date stamped on their server 12-23-11... that's right, last month. It also seems that files before 12-26-11 are not recoverable.

So as of this morning, they have not replied to that admittedly flaming last email I sent at 7:00ish last night... 15+ hours with no communications. This guy has obviously decided that I am unstable (well, maybe sometimes :} and shut me off.

2 years of my life gone on their servers and they are basically in denial... can't happen so it didn't happen.

I have found a number of posts on the net (not a huge amount) that had exactally the fact same thing happen from the sound of it.

So that's my story and I'm sticking with it :}

I don't know what to do. I would like to sue them but I'm too old to spend the next 3 years in court, not to mention I couldn't afford it anyway.

Do any of you guys have an idea or 2 about what I might do now?

Thanks for listening to my rant...

Frank

MODS... I am really trying to get some ideas/advice this is not about a war with DB

Perhaps you made a mistake. How long did the upload take? 58GB would take a very long time to upload. Did you verify the files were in the DropBox Web GUI before you deleted and reformatted your HD? If that is your backup method, you'd want to check and re-check to make sure and test a few files so that you can have confidence a backup was made. I assume you checked for deleted files on your dropbox account correct and nothing shows up?

I am on a Mac and have used Dropbox for a very long time and have had nothing but spectacular results.

Also, it should be noted that the Mac OS has a "Drop Box" folder inside your ~/Public folder by default and this is not the "DropBox" service folder which is synced.

The first few times I used Dropbox the files never made it to their server. I resent them several times and just before I was about to give up the files appeared. Hasn't happened since.

If you've deleted these files from your hard drive you might look into a file recovery service.

Not sure why you decided to use DB instead of picking up a few external hard drives but to each his own...

Sorry to say that if the data isn't there then there isn't anything that tech support can do for you and getting nasty with tech support isn't going to get you much. Sorry... I had an offline prospect try the old "I'm the customer... " line on me recently with an attitude and a raised voice so I have very little sympathy.

Check your data after you back it up and then check it again... lesson learned, eh?

I have used DB for years, and I have never lost anything that I know of. However, I also do nightly backups to both idrive and mozy backup. Essentially every 24 hours my cpu data ends up in 3 places plus my hard drive.

Having only 1 backup is only 1 crash away from having no backups.

Unfortunately if the files are not at DB then there is not much you can do. If you have all the info you say you do documented then legal action is possible, although honestly you would likely lose that as well.

it sounds like your only option is to check into possibly retrieving the data from your HD.

Too late now but you should have just invested in a USB drive. Around $170 for 128GB or thereabouts. Well worth the investment and your files are safe right there in your own home.

    • Wow. Telling him what he should have done seems kind of...heartless.

      The OP said this:

Maybe not recoverable by you, but go back to DropBox, be polite and humble and persistent, and tell them you know you screwed up but you really need this data and are willing to pay to have it restored.

Have them escalate your support ticket if necessary to get to someone who can help you.

I have a hard time believing they discard their own backups so quickly. Storage is dirt cheap.

Thanks for the feedback you guys.

fluffythewondercat; That's a good idea I'll probably give it a go.

digitalcrowd; I upgraded my Cable speed for a 3GB upload speed before the backup and yes it took quite a few hours, I spent a lot of time inside DB with the backup b4 I scrubbed the disk... it was most certainly on their server.

Again, thanks for the input guys.

I am sure you have explored the DB gui, but have you checked both the "deleted files" tab and the "events" tab in your DB account.

I am a big DB user, and the most common reason i find for missing DB files is that i have accidental deleted the files from my local DB folder on my pc which (by default) is set to automatically sync with DB.

Thus when I delete a file in my local DB folder on my pc, the files seeming disappears from the normal DB view.

Those files are still on the DB account however and can be accessed using both the events tab and the deleted files tab.

I am sure you have checked this out, but I figured I would ask since easy solutions are often overlooked.

Also does your account usage show that you have used the space or do show a huge amount of free space indicating the files are not there?

Wow ... I don't use DB, but that then seems like a dangerous setting to have ... to automatically sync with your local DB, especially if you do some housecleaning regularly. Good suggestion though. Would be nice if it is as simple as this.

yes, it is somewhat dangerous. That's why I have nightly backups to other places.

You can however disable the auto syncing or have it set to just auto sync certain files/folders.

Its not a big problem once you know that is how it works, but it can lead to problems.

Also DB supports "versioning" which means that even if i delete a file I can still find the old file in the DB events manager or deleted files tab.

That's what dropbox is designed for: To have cloud storage rather than a backup service/file locker.

You can even set your programs to read off your dropbox folder so you could work on an Excel spreadsheet on your desktop and then go to an offsite meeting with your laptop and keep working without having to even think about it.

Thanks David, good ideas all however I have gone down those roads, no luck. No my account, space wise is pretty empty. I think the only damming evidence is that part of the BU is hanging out there in Dec. I was out of town that week the upload is dated for with no computer... Xmas week... went cold turkey.

If I hadn't found a few of the exact same events on the web I'd wonder whether I had all the peyote from my youth coming back to haunt me.

    Hi,

I've personally never had a problem with Dropbox, in fact I love the service.

However, if you can't recover the files from dropbox directly you could try some data recovery software on your hard drive. It's likely that you'll be able to recover most of the data from your drive because formatting doesn't actually remove the data.

Alternatively you could try a professional data recovery service.

    Hope this helps

How did you transfer the files from your computer to dropbox?

If you simply placed them in your Dropbox folder, then they may not have transfered. Just because you moved them from one folder on your computer to another doesn't mean they transfered online. I have to sync my Dropbox in order for files to transfer, and it takes a long time for them to download my files.

I don't know what the status bar is called for your active applications on a Mac, but I do know that the Dropbox icon changes from it's normal picture to one with a spinning blue arrow that looks like a refresh button. Until that blue arrow turns to a green checkmark, the files are still being delivered. If you didn't have the program running while you were moving your files around, they wouldn't even initiate the transfer of files, thus leaving you in the position you are in.

It really sucks to say it, but it's a lesson learned. Always double check your online files before erasing them from your personal HDD.

I have dropbox, I use dropbox, but I don't use it for my Marketing. I use it for holding files that I share with friends, such as game manuals or stories. When it comes to my Marketing files, nothing beats an external TB drive that transfers at extreme speeds. For swapping files from my desktop to laptop, I usually use my 16gb USB Drive.

Don't panic yet and most importantly, stop using the computer right away.
This is because the more you use it, the less the chances of recovering your
data, as new usage begins to overwrite some of your old data, which even
though deleted/formatted, are still in there, somehow.

Then, take it to a data recovery specialist (there are many online but
it's better a physical one) to have them help you recover as much of your
data as they can - and yes, they do work. I have used a free one online once
and was surprised that I was able to recover the particular data I lost. Yes,
even formatted computers can get their lost data back.

Of course you should still work with DB, "politely" as someone here advised,
to get your data back. I once read about how particular the founder is
about ensuring DB delivers, even saying "DB is my life", so I think they will
do all that can be done to help you, if you INSIST, albeit politely,

    Hope this helps,

    Kingsley

If you didn't scrub your hard drive too hard there still there. One format won't take them off. Look into recovering files. Lots of good services out there and software.

Now on the companies part. You good at building websites. about a review site lmao.

Most tell me not to do it but I've did it about three times so far and got what I thought I should in return for the trouble the company made for me.
