Dangers of buying someone's email list

Hi guys,

Someone is offering to sell me their IM/MMO email list with 1700 current opt in subscribers. Even if the list was at the right price, what are some things I should consider before taking over someone's list? Also, would the subscribers have to opt in again before I could send them anything?

The list was generated from a MMO squeeze page and free gift within January 2012.

Could someone who has bought a list before please comment.

Thanks,

Brad

You are buying a list of freebie seekers. Probably not really that valuable. I would stay away from this.

If they had a good list, why would they be selling that list. Think for a second about that.

Maybe they're selling lists of MMO freebie-seekers to build a list of buyers of worthless lists whose details they can then sell on to other buyers of lists of marketers who have underperforming lists, to whose many lists you'll be added and subsequently spammed to death.

    Gosh. :-|

If the list was profitable .. it wouldn't be for sale. Not saying the list couldn't be made profitable.

If the price was right you can always import the list to an AR on your own server and not worry with a new conformation.

I would want to see every follow up that had been sent to them .. bounce rate ... ctr and then make an intelligent decision. If the list has just been sitting idle that is not good either.

Thats always been my main concern about buying any email list. If the list was making money I don't see the point of someone selling it. Now, paying someone to send an email to THEIR list, that makes sense for both parties.
