Keywords vs Keywords That Sell

I get traffic, but no sales. I have submitted articles, social bookmarked, RSS feeds etc. My blogs and Squidoo lenses rate fairly well and I have PR's of 1, 2 and 3 on a few longtail keywords.

I am beating my brains out as to why no sales and came up with the conclusion that I am picking the wrong keywords...wrong in the sense that they are not "selling" keywords.

Can anyone give me some examples of keywords and "keywords that sell"?

Thanks!

Without knowing your niche it is kinda hard to answer that question.

Typical action keywords are as follows:

    product name
    buy product name
    purchase product name
    product name review

If you are in a niche where there is a lot of free information available you will have a hard time converting.

I see a lot of people try to target keywords such as dog training. Not a good idea. Too broad and will result in a lot of traffic but few conversions.

Clicker training for puppies converts very well. It is targeted and whoever is searching for this knows what they want.

Even longtail keywords can be duds if there is a large amount of free info available.

That is the best I can do with the info you provided....

  • yeah it might help to know your niche and more importantly how much traffic you've already gotten

some niches don't convert well overall so you might just have a case of too high of expectations and just need to do some more of the same to get more traffic.

      OK, here is the lens:
      Magic & Mentalism Secrets Revealed!

It has received approximately 200 visits in the last 30 days.
It is currently ranked on page 2 of Google for the (broad) keyword: magic and mentalism.

Have at it and don't hold anything back.

I'm not really sure about this niche as I have never really done anything with it....

But, the first thing that I wonder is whether or not people that are looking for this type of thing are just wanting to see tricks/examples in video or if they are trying to find it to buy a product to teach them the craft.

Are you using keywords like "how to" or are you using keywords "cool magic tricks"?

In order to get this niche to convert, I personally think your keywords are going to have to be very targeted to weed out the lookers from the buyers.

I totally agree with you and have tried to use a number of "how to" keywords. Maybe you're right...maybe this just isn't the right product.

      OK, here ya go...

This niche failed two very important litmus tests

      1. Searches for your key word phrase are only 390 a month.
      2. VERY little competition within adwords. This is a good indication that there is no market.

The only action keyword phrases that I found were:

magic and mentalism e books 22 searches a month
magic and mentalism ebooks 73 searches a month

I tried to find some keywords that might help out but I had no luck. It looks as if this is one of those niches that has a ton of free info available.

Now, a little about your lens....

I think your lens is well laid out, but it has some issues.

You have links at the bottom to all kinds of affiliate sites. You need to build lenses that are focused on a single topic. Even in your profile you have lenses on several different subjects.

You need to set up several squidoo accounts, each one focusing on a certain topic. This will help you look more like an authority in this field.

So create an account and be an IM expert and review IM products.

Create an account on learning foreign languages and do reviews of different software as an expert.

I hope you understand what I am saying.

As for the magic lens, I would just let it ride and work on something new. You need to do more research when choosing your niche to work in. Make sure there is a market for what you are trying to promote.

If there is little to no adwords competition, chances are there is no monetary market available.

Make sure you have at least 100 searches a day for your keywords. Unless it is a super targeted action keyword phrase such as "buy product" or "purchase product".

      Hope this helps

        Thank you for your response.

My only question is that I have targeted many more keywords than just "magic and mentalism".

        Keywords like:
how to learn magic 6,600 searches
how to learn magic tricks 2,900 searches
learn to do magic 3,600 searches
        learn easy magic 3,600 searches

All of these keywords have average to low competition.

I want you to go to Google keyword tool and select the "website content" option to generate keywords.

Enter the url to your lens and generate keywords.

This will tell you what Google thinks your lens is optimized for.

If you notice, these keyword phrases do not come up in the results.

          how to learn magic
          how to learn magic
          learn to do magic
          learn easy magic

So, that means that your lens is not optimized for these keywords...

As a newbie, I'm not quite sure I understand...

I'm assuming this is what you're referring to as my keywords:
Showing keywords grouped by these terms:
how to do (7), magic trick (54), card trick (16), mind reading (14), david blaine (10), criss angel (9), magic (42), trick (12), mind (5), mentalism (16), mentalist (5), magician (5), Miscellaneous keywords (5)

I thought I was targeting the longtailed keyword phrases as stated above, at least that was my intention...I guess I failed miserably.

Do you then work on selecting phrases from the "keywords related to" options?

This tool shows you what google thinks you site is related to. You have some longtail keywords related to your lens, just not the ones you listed in your post.

If you want you lens to be related to those keyword, you need to have those prominent on your lens. ie. in titles of your modules.

I still think you are beating a dead horse with this one. Take the time nad energy and devote it to a niche that has a proven sales record. Something that has a lot of adwords competition. This means that people are making money from that niche.

Move away from this lens for a little while and focus on something else. You can always go back and try to tweak it later once you have some money coming in...

If you have rankings and optimized from the wrong keywords(keywords that aren't buyers) you need to get them on a list or some other means to give them the information to take them from lookers to buyers.

Browsing/information gathering keywords usually get more traffic than the "buying" ones. Learning how to convert gathers to buyers is where the money is.

yeah but you rank for "magic and mentalism" and that's what the page looks like to visitors and search engines.

and then, if I do land on your page for a keyword like "how to learn magic tricks" and see "mentalism" everywhere I'm outta there! Probably before I ever see the offer to buy something.
