What to look for in word press blog theme?

Hi I am setting up a Word Press blog and have used the basic blog theme. I note that there are thousands of Word Press themes available to change the look of the blog. I want to covey the theme of the blog in the header or look of the blog, but after that I don't know what features to look for in a new theme. I plan to use the blog as a platform to offer free emails reports and other items that will begin to put blog readers into the "marketing funnel" leading to a sales page down the road.

Can anyone offer any advice on what features I should look for in picking a new theme?

Thanks for your help, Ed.

    Hey Ed,

There is no magic bullet when it comes to getting a theme.

Just remember it's all about your visitor. Clean and simple is
always better than most flashy websites.

Take a look at Thesis and Woo Themes for one you like.

    It's really that simple.

    Hope this helps.

I take into consideration whether the developer is a company that keeps it's themes updated regularly. That's important with all the changes in Wordpress. I use Woo themes mostly, but there are a lot of great premium themes. Elegant themes are also really nice themes.

Definitely consider one of their SEO optimized themes. They are set-up to make life for Google's bot very easy. They also load faster. Just do a search for "SEO" in the theme area and they'll be sorted accordingly.
    Good luck with your project.

I've recently switched to using the Genesis platform. It's constantly updated and very SEO friendly (i.e it does a lot more than supply META boxes for you to fill in). There are also lots of child themes to choose from.

You can see them here (direct link) - StudioPress Themes

I've used dozens and dozens of Premium and free themes over the years but am very pleased with Genesis so far.

You need the parent theme to use a child theme

Sorry for the delay (thanks Suzanne for answering).

Child themes are basically just like normal themes. Once you have the Genesis framework you can choose to use whichever Child theme would suit your site. It comes with the standard one and the others are paid for seperately (or you can pay a larger amount for all of them).

There are platforms such as Thesis, Genesis and Headway Themes which are fully seo optimized and offer and quick and easy way to create your own blog theme.

I'm using Headway since i'm useless at coding, so all I need to do is drag and drop content and widgets.

I'm not a wordpress expert but I've fiddled with it for years. After exploring hundreds of Wordpress themes, the best ones are the ones I've paid for. That isn't to say all paid ones are great because I've paid for some real duds, but the good ones are highly flexible, easy to ease and customize, are SEO friendly, etc.

I got mine at ThemeForest for $35 and am very happy with it. Good luck!
