Interesting Fact : People Like to Be Lied to.

I made an interesting discovery.

Of cause with all theories and hypothesis there are exceptions.

My hypothesis which can be proven as theory as soon as you look through the WSO, Classified and hire section you will agree with me.

People like to be lied to, Deceived, Scammed, Over promised, hyped.

People just love this.
Oh and by the way, im not selling anything, and im not promoting anyone or any service.

Try looking through those sections that were mentioned above and you will find that those with generally good responds are those that i feel have super HYPED up BS. AND their cheap!

Of cause again, some are expansive ones and yet have good responds, i believe those live up to it and have reputation to back them.

But the general public loves to be lied to.

Hyped up over sweeten promise and cheap dont go hand in hand.

Common sense tells you that.

There is a difference between a good deal and total rubbish.

Sure its okay to find a good deal. But i mean some of the threads i read there are really BS and people buy into it.

Okay let me give you 2 exaggerated examples just for explanation sake.

1. Paying $27 or $47 or $97 [magic numbers] 1 time payment and expect to rank in google for any keyword.? How about pay me $1 and get your site ranked FAST!
I dont mind if 1 million people buy into this at $1 each, i get to keep 1 mil . Sounds great ya?
This is pure BS. Doesnt make sense.

2. Paying $50 per keyword per month and get it ranked, or some kind of guarantee SEO. Which i really saw some good ones. Now that is a good deal. Still logical to buy in.

There is a slight difference when looking at service and products though.
What im talking about is more to service side. That is why i used the famous SEO service.
Why? Because service requires continuous effort and time and hours into the work.
So giving you good results means doing loads of work, and no one will do that for you for "dirt" cheap.
As compared to products, it is made 1 time, and can be sold without further efforts, so it still can be "dirt" cheap if you want it.

So i noticed those honest people who have no BULL no hype just trying to earn by offering pure service, without selling you a dream, gets left in the dust.

That is the funny thing. SO is it the sellers fault to sell you hyped up stuff or the buyers fault for encouraging more of this offers to pop up. ?

After all marketers which are sellers, go where the market demand is. That is their job, give people what they want.

So like they say for sharks fin or any illegal animal poaching for animal parts, "when the buying stops, the killing stops"

Alright what i meant was what newbieee said.

its not the literal meaning of people like being lied.
No body likes being lied to, its not liike you go to your wife and say tell me a lie, i just have orgasm when you do that. lol

Newbieee's example hits spot on.

People do not like to be lied too, they feel deceived and broken.

A little story. I have not been all good boy lol. I used to be very devious.
In the late 80's early 90's before I grew up I did telemarketing. Not the telemarketing your familiar with, the kind where the slum bag calls and smooths talks and slams you.

I have sold everything from pink elephants to catamarans.
New people used to ask me, this makes me feel bad. I was usually the room manager and I would respond. Were helping these people. People have to dream and were just feeding there dreams.

It's not that people like being lied too, they just think if they keep searching they will find that instant rich.

      Thats where the problem is.

This is the mentality of the buyer in this case.
And the problem is there is NO instant rich and EASY access to success.

But deep down inside all of us there is a lazy hopeful self that wish this were true, knowing it is not. So we just bluff ourself and buy into it hoping blindly that it will turn out true.

So how many have come true and live to tell the tale, that they bought a magic push button system that made them millions?

      Overnight, no effort, etc.

And in my case, i was talking about service, so who have hired $27 SEO guy and ranked for top spots in google?

Pls tell me, i want to try!

        Tell me about it.

But rather haev a few serious people contact me than 100s of responds and no quality customers.
If its all hype then customers will be 1 time customers.
Unless you manage to bluff then again and again, then you have 1 stupid customer! hahaa

and also a hand full of serious continuous customers is enough.

i spend more than 3 hours to prepare a report.
If i have so many not serious, wishful people come to me blindly hoping to spend less than $100 to get ranked on google for medium competition to high competition keywords then its not worth my time.

I mean come on, to rank it takes alot of manual work. [that is white hat of cos] and if you expect to be up in google for med to high com kws and only pay $100, its not going to happen. No where on earth you will find this. No matter which country you are in, no matter how weak the service provider's currency is[which means your little is their alot], no one can offer you <$100 for all the manual hours of doing SEO to rank you on page 1.

so let the wishful people continue to buy or pay for dirt cheap stuff that never works. And slowly dirt cheap adds up and becomes clean expansive.

        haha.

You know I understand what you are saying and I suppose in a weird way there is some truth to it but it reminds me of something I noticed about 20 years ago when I sold cars for a couple of years.

Lying is a funny thing depending on who's lying!

There were many salesman that would say anything to sell a car. I was known for the one who told the truth even if it would cost me the sale. Don't get me wrong there were many times when I would just keep my mouth shut and not say something negative but I would not lie just to get a sale.

Which brings me to this thing that I noticed back then. A customer would come in and lie like crazy to try and get the best deal they could but if the customer caught the salesman lying it was all over and they would leave and never come back. Why? Because the salesman wasn't honest.

Matter of fact you don't even have to lie. People hear what they want and they remember parts of what they read. I sold cars too. First month had someone tell my boss I told him the truck was never wrecked. I can remember right now what I said and that was that I had no idea but it ran just fine.

      haha i understand you too.

But in those cases i will say this. In fact i have used it before.

Case 1 : i represent myself, or there is no direct link between you and the company, you earn how much you sell, just like property agent or insurance agent. If the customer says, somebody offer me this price and that price, i would say, then go to him. I have no problems. Many times just for face, they say ok, then a day or 2 later, they call back and give some excuse why they never went for that guy and came back to me.

Case 2 : you represent directly a corporate comapny, so doing the above would result in you being fired, then i would just say it professionally. Sir this is what we can offer, its the best on my end, you are free to make a decision.

      Thats it.

I've been told I can come up with fantastic assumptions and then make some horrible conclusions.

OP may suffer from the same thing. No, people obviously don't love to be lied to, they at times lack the skill to determine what's the truth and what isn't (although it's really obvious in some cases).

I don't think they actually like to be lied to, but they are attracted to offers with over the top promises, fake screenshots, etc. like bees to honey.

They want to believe that it is true. They are seeking for the product that promises wealth without work. Those types of WSOs sell much better than a lot of WSOs that don't resort to that kind of hype and income claims.

They are dreamers. Many of them make it to the main discussion forum after one failure after another and cry and scream about getting ripped off, but they'll probably buy another one soon after.

I just think that all of us are agreeing actually.

There is no disagreement. Just different angles of putting it.

And i belief what the OP said "people LIKE to be lied to" Is not the "like" where its the same as i "like" icecream.

Its something like the following examples:

    1. flies like lights. [because they keep going into them, that doesnt mean they acutally "like the lights, they are just attracted to them for some reason]

    2. flies like banging windows. [its not that they actually like banging onto windows, its just that they are that dumb to not know it is there]

    Get the picture?
Its not the "like" as in preference. Its "like" as in keep doing it for some reason.

People don't like to be lied to... they like having someone else tell them what they want to hear...

That's not just in IM either. There are plenty of other industries and models that this happens in... the psychotherapy industry for one.

They want validation that what they think isn't silly or wrong or a pipe dream. That 'heroes' can overcome great obstacles to go on to become huge rock star success stories, and they want to feel like the person they are listening to is 'just like them.'

The real problem occurs when a person generalizes on something just like the OP said that PEOPLE like to be lied.

How about if you are going to say, if not all, most of the people like to be lied,,blah blah..
or if not most, many of the people like to be lied... blah, blah
or if not many, some of the people like to be lied... blah, blah..

However, you mentioned that there are exceptions and I agree with that.

I like the point of the other fellow warrior too that people don't like to be lied, only that they lacked the skills to determine which one is good and which one is bad.

Sometimes, I think this has something to do with marketing methods and techniques that you need to get the attention and interest of your potentials buyers with the use of those mentioned lines.

Personally, I still value this proverb that honesty is the best policy.

My 2 cents on the topic for whatever they're worth.

I do not believe anybody likes to be lied to.

But saying that general public is conditioned to believe lies has more ground.

Regardless, lieing is wrong - I bet you wouldn't want your spouse or loved ones to lie to you so don't lie to others.

    Just my 2 cents.

Furthermore - remember that business is all about your reputation and your relationships - it is not wise to get a reputation for lieing and destroying relationships the same way.

People like to believe grand promises, seven-figure income claims, and generally anything that sounds too good to be true. But they don't like to be lied to. Take any false WSO claim and write "That is a lie" underneath it, and nobody will buy.

"I can believe anything, provided that it is quite incredible", Oscar Wilde, "The Picture of Dorian Gray"....

I think that people want to believe in a truth that seems to be (at present) slightly beyond their reach, as opposed to being told what is perceived to be an outright lie. People want something better in/for their lives, so they are willing to believe in the promise of something better--even something extraordinarily better.

The lure of many IM advertisements lies in showing what is possible more so than in what is probable, given a set of circumstances. So, many people become frustrated when they realize that they probably aren't going to achieve those "possible" results without a lot of extra, unanticipated effort.

The same lure (the possibility of something better) is used in many other areas of life to entice people to a particular point of view. It's an age-old occurrence.

I agree with Danielle. People don't like to be lied to... but they want to hear what they want to be told. "Make 10,000 in 3 hours without doing any work." They would rather risk $27 on the slim possibility that maybe it's the truth, then pay $27 for a program that they know will show results but requires a lot of work.

It does make it a lot harder to sell reputable products when most buyers want hype and pipe dreams. Then they complain when low and behold they didn't make $10,000 in 3 hours. "Poor me! The world is full of scammers!"

Most people want to be led.

Many of them want quick, easy, instant, 'push button' solutions. They want to believe in the "quick and easy, lazy way to riches."

Many are desperate so they will believe anything. And, as other members already mentioned above, many people don't want to hear the truth; yet others just don't know what the truth is. I'll add that they only want somebody to reinforce and support their own version of the truth.

Also, most people who buy WSOs (or any other product) never look at it. Most of those that do look at the products never put it to use.

Finally, many people buy products without ever having the intention of using them. They just want to feel like they're taking some kind of "action" - and moving forward - in life.

And, some just want to feel good about knowing that they could put the products to use if they ever put in a tight spot in the future and needed some fast cash.

Now... what YOU do as a marketer, entrepreneur, seller, business owner... is on you.

You could continue to add to the problem by selling hollow promises and useless products by telling yourself that "That's what everybody wants" or "that's what sells and honesty doesn't."

Or you could create some real products and real value for your customers. You could learn how to market better. You could learn how to build better relationships with your customers.

And maybe...just maybe... you might get an email or phone call one day from a customer telling you that your product really made a difference in his life. That, finally he found something that actually worked or did what it promised.

What you do is on you.

Get my latest WSO... Disclaimer This is not a real WSO

How I easily made 1125.00 last month setting on my butt listening to the radio in my car.

I can tell you how you can do this also with no problem... Can anyone guess

clue: 3 hours a day max only 25 days a month would be needed.

I can see the point about people want to be lied to or they would not put up with it.

They want to think they can make 10,000 in a month selling PLR on Amazon...

How far did that get? LOL AMAZON SLAP

You guys / gals buy the wrong things... you buy the make 10,000 on fiver per month...
for one no way you can make 10,000 a month on fiverr without breaking the TOS.

You should know this and then not buy the WSO for it... it sold a lot by the way... Who has made 10,000 a month by buying that WSO.

Then you have a program SCRIPT that can make you money over time that i use every day to make money.. but hardly anyone buys it. Because the sales page does not make large claims or over hype or lies.

So yes you like to be lied to

My advise to everybody is to market to both types, the dreamers and the rest. Among other things I have a fat loss product. I have 2 types of copy for the same product. One is hyped out the other is No bull. Both attract different types of clients.

I read somewhere that the founder of Benetton once opened 2 shops in the same street. He thought one shop would absorb half the customers and the other the rest. But this was not the case. He got unique customers to his other shop that was in the very same street.

So basically for the same product I have 2 lists and I send them different types of copy.

They do however, like to hear what they want to hear.....

They like to be encouraged, told something that could help them possibly, among many other scenarios.

    The problem is this...

Internet marketers who interpret the innate desire of people wanting success and help as "they like to be lied to"...

Saying that people like being lied to, is like saying that Gold Miners like digging in the dirt. Maybe a very few do, but most of them just like finding Gold. And the pay off is so good, that they're willing to dig through tons of dirt to get it.

Same thing in the WSO section, only replace tons of dirt with tons of BS.

It's not that we like being lied to, but we do enjoy finding an occasional nugget - so we put up w/ tons of BS.

From witnessing many online hoax, it has come to reality that people want to get lied by others at one point of time or another. Because this action of getting cheated by others increases their aggresiveness and their enthusiasm and thereby their passion to succeed will increase even more.

Nobody likes to be lied too (As far as IM is concerned)!

(Desires plunder, hopes sank into silence, and dreams fade away, but only to seek a new wonder on another day…)

But they have been conditioned to believe the lies of the marketers’ (not all) hyped up copy!

Thereby, being unconsciously programmed (by the savvy marketers…), they are taught to go for the “GOLDEN SHINY OBJECTS”.

Why? YOU ask…Well, because this is the way that it should have been from the beginning.

In some way, a lie is central to whatever you believe.

We are a perverse species, or as one popular belief system has put it "a stiff-necked people."

We don't like reality. We don't like truth. These things frighten us, because the reality is that less than 50% of us are above average, and the truth is that if you haven't done anything to become above average - you're probably not.

And what's starting to get really scary about this is that we are increasingly uncertain of what to do with anyone that isn't far above average.

There will always be jobs for rock stars and supermodels.

And there will always be jobs mopping the floor and plunging the toilets.

Anything in between is uncertain, but there's basically a line... and everybody on one side of that line gets to be a crappy celebrity, while everybody on the other gets to be a glorified janitor.

But since nobody wants to mop floors and plunge toilets, they want to believe that they're closer to being a rock star or supermodel. They want to be the crappy celebrity, not the glorified janitor.

And they want people to tell them that this is true.

Because the human brain has a particular quality no other animal's brain has: we can accept contradiction.

Imagine you put two red balls, three green balls, and a blue ball on the table.

Now you bring a human being into the room and say "are there more blue balls than red balls?" and he'll say "no." And if you bring a chimpanzee into the same room and ask the same thing, he'll also indicate "no."

Now pose a new question. "If the green balls were blue, would there be more blue balls than red balls?"

      A human being says "yes."

The chimpanzee doesn't understand the question.

If the question is pressed, he will become violent. His brain cannot comprehend the notion of imagining that things are not as his senses tell him they are. When he can see the three green balls on the table, suggesting that they are blue... when his eyes can clearly see they are green.. infuriates him.

Cover the balls with a box, and - like the human - he can imagine that the balls in his mind's eye have changed colour. But when his physical eye can see a green ball, he simply cannot process the idea of pretending that the ball is blue. He cannot think a thing that his senses tell him is untrue.

Human society, on the other hand, is entirely predicated on contradiction. If we couldn't believe one thing while our senses told us another, our civilisation simply couldn't function.

Everyone with a day job believes that if they work hard and do well and people like them, they will get promotions and raises. Meanwhile, they also believe their boss is a lazy jerk who screws everything up. These are contradictory. If your boss didn't work hard or do well and nobody likes him, then clearly your hypothesis about what will get you promoted is false.

But you believe it, because that is what you have been taught is the "right" answer. Not the correct answer, matching the truth, but the moral answer - matching a desirable fantasy.

Civilisation has gotten where it is because we are designed to prefer these desirable fantasies to reality.

And when you get off your arse and make them real, that's what gave us the seven wonders of the ancient world - the pyramids, the sphinx, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the colossus of Rhodes, etc. All of those things started out as desirable fantasies, and then someone got off his arse and made them real.

So why don't we have things like that anymore?

Because somewhere along the line, we stopped getting off our collective arse and making them real.

It's not just IM. It's everything. It's everywhere. It's everyone. If you don't get off your arse and do something, it's always just going to be a fantasy. And on some level, we're supposed to understand that we like desirable fantasies because they can be made reality. Because with insight, skill, and determination, all things are possible - as the seven wonders of the ancient world clearly demonstrate.

Well, those and an inexhaustible supply of slave labour. But that's surmountable.

        That's deep sh!t right there!

Here's what's missing though: humans will react the same way when they can't understand something (think Christians vs Muslems, poor vs rich, white people vs black people, entrepreneurs vs other people).

Plus, if something contradicts their deeply ingrained beliefs they (humans) will get violent too. AND more importantly, most people will get violent when they start to realize they might have been wrong - often resulting in clutching onto the lie even more!

My girlfriend, mother, sisters all believe the next breakthrough in losing weight.

      Here's the problem..

All of them have bought into the great claims of drinking this or taking this pill or dancing in front of your TV.

      So what happened?

They do it a few times then ask for a refund.

People want instant gratification, if that's what you promise. Companies put in short and fast unreadable print: "You must do diet and exercise but also contact a physician before starting hence any major medical problems you might have that could hinder results or be dangerous to your health".

No, not every product is diet related but the claims are similar.

People are gullible if the promotion is clever. How many of them will buy on claims then say hell with it and want a refund?

    Hello,
I was in car sales for many years, when I embellished the story I made a sale, people like to hear a story.
When I just told the plain facts it was a boring low sale.

Lou, you just hit on an important point. People love stories.

They are also sick of hearing all the negatives in the world. So, if you can be positive and tell a story, you win.

The best is tell the truth in a story in a positive way.

I strongly disagree! People want to hear the truth.

I always speak the truth now, In fact, there was a time I use to lie and wasn't anywhere successful as I am now!

In fact, there is no need to lie and it will turn against you sooner or later! There cannot be any true success without the truth and I learned this the hard way! People can feel it when you are truthful or not in your Ad copy is my experience.

Actually, they can tell when you don't believe what you are saying.

And we're capable of believing things that aren't true.

A good liar is good because he believes what he is saying. It's not "lying" as we generally think of it. It's make-believe. He makes himself believe first... and then he makes you believe. Because he actually believes what he is saying while he is saying it, the lie goes undetected. And as social creatures at our core, we are naturally inclined to believe what others around us believe.

Look around the forum. How many outright stupid things do you see that "everybody knows" here?

Nobody likes getting scammed or getting the wrong information on purpose, People want you to tell them what they want, they want to believe there is a solution for the issue they have..weight loss programs, u think they know it wont work but they buy it?

No..they might think it wont work but they don't want to be negative so they buy it HOPING this is the solution, they need something to help them so bad so they will believe, they want to buy something to feel they have addressed the issue and they are not ignoring it, it will give them a good feeling...

The weight loss was just an example so I don't mean to offend anyone, so basically when people have problems and they think its hard to fix them for alot of reasons then they look for something that will fix it or make them feel good abt it...

If you have a product that you trust and know it will help you can try to sell it to them BUT don't make promises..results are based on the effort they make, you have to tell them, its not magic..unfortunately this is not the case in the real world
