How accurate is Alexa?

We have a us ranking of 257,268 with 6 sites linking in. Yet when i search for our keyword "drum lessons" I can't find our site in google.
Sites that show up in the first few pages on google have a worse ranking on alexa but more sites linking in.

I was just wondering how accurate alexa is.

    There are actually a number of reasons why Alexa isn’t the most accurate measure of a website’s popularity, though the most obvious one is the fact that Alexa is based on an optional toolbar. That toolbar must be manually installed and the owner of the computer in question must be willing to have their information tracked.
    In essence, this means that your high Alexa ranking means that you are high in the rankings only amongst people who happen to have installed Alexa and who have chosen to have their browsing history tracked by the toolbar.

      I confirm that Alexa is not very accurate in measuring websites's popularity.

    Do not bother yourself with alexa or the page rank of your website. They are minimal factors when ranking your website for keywords. I stopped looking at them

    The only benefit for alexa is if you are ranked high enough it is good social proof for offline clients. Otherwise, bumpkins!

    I think Alexa has nothing to do with SE rankings. It's just an estimation of your current traffic.

      All that "Alexa rankings" can ever measure is the traffic to a site from people who have the "Alexa toolbar" installed in their browser. And they're nearly all internet marketers.

      Nothing about "normal people", "customer traffic", or anything else at all.

      To someone trying to sell an IM site, or trying to sell advertising space on one, who envisages potential customers gullible enough to imagine that it's of some significance, and wants to have some "number" to quote to them, I can see it just about being tangentially relevant.

      But for any other purpose at all ... forget it. A total waste of time, signifying nothing.

    I'm not sure how accurate Alexa is. I am sure that livejasmin(59) should not outrank CNN(60), AOL(63) and ESPN(64).
    Don't know if that says more about Alexa or the world we live in these days.

    They have some silly statistics so don't bother with it too much. They say that somebody's website that is total crap and doesn't have a good SEO is worth over $1k...
