Do You Click Adsense Ads to Support Good Content?

When I read a blog post that I think is exceptionally good, I'm aware that the blogger is putting out the content not for free, but with the hope that they'll monetize in some way.

Generally, I've become immune to advertisements. I see right through them. But if the content is really good and I think I'm getting value out of it, I look around for adsense ads to see if there is something that I'm interested in and go ahead and give them a click. I don't click on something that I wouldn't click on anyway, I just make a point of taking off my Adsense blinders for a bit and see if there is a way that my click will help the author. If they don't have adsense, I at least look at some of the affiliate offers to see if I'm interested. They may as well get my business since I've gotten something from them.

I'm a bit amazed at how some people feel they have a right to free content and even go so far as to run advertising blocking software. I wonder why they think that content gets created in the first place?

I see that many marketers don't like to click other's adsense, but I always do, especially when it's some ad about what I am interested in. So, yes, you do have a point.

Itdraper, I competely agree with you.. And to be completely honest, I am guilty of this as well, I have been to a billion blogs and websites, many of them providing resources that have helped me make money online and I havent made a single affiliate purchase or clicked on an adsense link (unless it was a mistake). I think that you are completely right though, if more bloggers actually took the effort to thank each other in this way, the world would be a lot better place.. I agree as well that if you are going to click on an ad, make sure to stick around at the site and make sure it is something that would make sense for you to purchase...

For example, if you are going to purchase a book from Amazon, there is nothing wrong to purchase it through an affiliate link. The same goes for all the purchases we make.

No, I don't. Because it costs some other poor schmuck their hard-earned when I'm not really (or even, "really not") a targetted prospect.

The following rationale, which you posit in your OP, ltdraper, is invalid:

[paraphrase] "I want to reward the blogger. So I look for things to click on. I click on something that is in the realm of my interests. Therefore this is something that I would have clicked on anyway."

If you want to "reward" someone, then leave a comment thanking them for the information or insight they've provided.

Join the discussion.

Go back to the blog and become part of that micro-community. (I just made that term up, I think. Let's see if it takes off! )

Look for their PayPal button and send 'em a buck outta your own pocket. (And if they don't have one, email 'em and show 'em how to do it).

Link to it from one of your sites.

Social bookmark it.

Leave a link to a good article on a related blog.

Etcetera.

There are ways to say "Thank you" that don't have to cost you anything

Here's one: Find their contact details from their blog and write them a short note telling them how much you appreciate their efforts and so on.

Yeah, warm'n'fuzzy don't pay the blogger's bills. But my point is, why should someone else pay for the warm and fuzzy that you get from saying "Thank you" via Adsense clicks?

(And before anyone says "But Adsense clicks are only pennies!" think about your own Adwords account. Are all your clicks (even on the content network) just nickel and dimers?)

I agree that there is an ever-increasing expectation that all information be made freely available and if you're selling your expertise (or not even your expertise on the topic, but your expertise at being able to collect, assimilate, and convey that information in a more easily-digestible form), then you're a crook or a scammer.

There are freeloaders everywhere, sure.

But I disagree that everyone who puts content on the Net is doing so (primarily) in order to monetize it. That's just false.

  TheNightOwl is correct. This is a common misconception.
  
  Most of the time, people will take zero action on the adsense linked site and in fact they damage the person's adsense CTR while earning them pennies (or nothing) for the click.
  
  You might even cause problems for the adwords advertiser's CTR/CPC too.
  
  The only party that always wins from this is Google, which is why it's such an ingenious business model. The other two are 'little guys' in comparison. I understand the motivation to reward the person, but you just have to look at it a little deeper than the surface.

  I disagree. If their content is really good, the best thing that you could do for them is write a post about what you found, use their main keyword in the title, and link to them with the keyword as anchor text.

  Ann, anchor text is when you take a popular keyword that is relevant to your site and link it to your site with a hyperlink. When you do this on sites other than your own, you begin to build relevant backlinks to your site for that keyword. The more such backlinks you have, the more Google will see your site as important for the searcher who is using that keyword.

  I don't, I only click when I am interested in the ad, if you click just to support good content it may do more harms than good to the blog owner.

Actually, funny thing is -- yes -- I have -- but I have actually bought items based on clicking on an adsense ad. I did feel they've done a lot of hard work to make good content available, and thought I would at least see what the advertiser had to say (I didn't simply just click on it, I actually looked to see what product/service they would have available), and surprisingly actually have made purchases based on advertisements.

if everyone did this for a blogger it would probably get them in trouble with adsense or get them smart priced on their account.

Not a good idea.

Your concept shocks me. If you would click anyway, why would it have to be intentional when you just happen to notice that the blog holds quality content?

Your statement that you would click anyway sounds like a giveaway to save your neck. As has been stated already, there are more direct ways to thank the blogger that will give them more value in return than a measly few pennies from Adsense. Clearly, you didn't have a true grasp of the Adsense/Adwords combo when you thought about this concept.

The blogger might have good content and be making mere pennies from the ads, but another marketer is paying much more for those ads. So using your theory, do you think it's okay to pump up a fellow marketer's ad budget - in essence, have them pay for your 'generosity' and good spirit?

I don't know whats worse...the fact that this post was actually made, or the fact that some people actually AGREED with it?

At least this makes me understand a bit more why I refuse to let my Adwords be shown on the content network.

This is possibly one of most absurd posts I have seen on this forum.

I wouldn't agree on clicking adsense ads as a way of thanking the blogger for the excellent content. Essentially it is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

  Actually, the funny thing is though, even though your intent may be to simply click on the ad, many people do inadvertently purchase something, because they think, hmm that looks interesting. The key with many ads is simply getting the user to the page. Once they are there, the sales copy does the rest.

  Don't click on an Adsense ad unless you're actually interested in the ad. Don't do it to 'tip' the site owner for good info because this hurts both the site owner and the advertiser.
  
  If you really want to help an Adsense site owner, create a link to it using their keywords in the anchor text from another site. This helps improve their external SEO for their keywords and brings them more targeted search traffic. This will make them, and the advertiser, more money in the long run than your one click.
