Advice and Warnings from experenced marketers?

by NickVCover 9 replies
As a new person stepping his toe into these waters, do any of you silverbacks out there have any advice or warnings for those of us who are just starting? Anything to watch out for? Anything that can bite us in the @ss if we are not careful?

Thanks for your help. If this generates a good list I'll compile it into a single document and post it for those who follow.

WARNINGS !!! make sure you focus on learning one skill / business mdoel before moving on..

the best bet if possible is to start providing a service which will help you get the money in before taking a bigger leap as some biz models take time to bring in the money without investment..

also if you are not using any product in the next 2-4 days please do not buy..i wasted a lot of $$ and time because i was un informed and was learning everything which lead to nothing but frusturation ..thankfully past that phase now...

    good luck..

It is so easy to get information overload. Don't try to learn everything at once. Before you buy something, Google it and find out all you can about it first. If you see and hear good things about it then you might consider learning it but stick to one thing at a time until you got it down. Example: there are dozens of ways to drive traffic. Learn one method until you are good at it. Then move on and learn another method.

    1. Have a business goal.
write it down somewhere you can see your short term, long term goal. Always keep to it.

    2. Don't get attracted by shiny new launches
Hold steadfast to the method that you are following, and make sure you see it through. IF you are interested in a new launch/product, as yourself OBJECTIVELY whether it will help you accomplish #1.

    3. Your business needs new leads to sustain everyday.
So, you need to start and continue doing marketing at all times. Focus on at least 1 PAID marketing method, and 1 free one that makes 80% of your traffic source. On the other 20%, test new ones. Never EVER rely on only one single traffic source.

    4. Plan Your Customer Retention Strategy
I might be biased here- but I seriously believe email marketing is ONE awesome way to keep track of your current customers, anda updating them of your new projects. If you don't use email marketing, then have a back up plan on how you are going to contact these prospects.

    5. Focus
You don;t have to be in all social media networks and spend all day there. You don't have to be in 100s of forums, you dont have to read hundreds of blogs, you dont have to do 100 different stuffs at the same time. Focus on one, and do that well. Make sure you know what is your #1 everyday and work towards them.

Be careful about buying websites. Research the site well and whatever service it offers. In my research I have found that the difference between a $100 website and a $3000 is not much. The more expensive sites offer all kinds of built in traffic but generally don't justify the extra cost. I would recommend getting one customized exactly the way you want it and learn to drive traffic yourself through many different free methods.

If I could start again (like I did in 2006), I would say, don't ever, ever give up. It sounds so lame, but if you just keep working on it you will eventually get results.

In fact I would say that if you work diligently and stay focused every single day, and keep applying what you are learning, and expanding and expanding, it is almost impossible not to reach your online goals.

My mistake was starting and quitting 3 times between 2006 and 2010.
This time, I'm still going and am getting some results.

    That's my advice at least.

        Focus.

Log out of email if you find yourself checking it all the time.

Create a list of goals for each day, then tackle the biggest one first (Eat That Frog).

If you're subscribed to a "newsletter" that consists of nothing but pitches and no content, unsubscribe.

        Take action.

        Don't give up.

Advice: Set goals and stick to them. Don't get distracted by people trying to sell you the latest, greatest, make-a-million-bucks-in-2-hours product. Focus!
Warning: You might get frustrated and disheartened. Don't give up! Keep at it. If you don't enjoy what you're doing - get someone else to do it.
