How many people doing internet marketing really know "marketing"?

Hi,

After 3 years trying to make money online,
doing affiliate marketing I realised that my knowledge
about marketing is poor. How sad it is?

Internet marketing
affiliate marketing
CPA marketing
information marketing

In all these terms, half is "marketing"

How many people who claims to be doing
some sort of marketing really learn and do marketing?

After analysing what happened, I think i got the answer.

1. Majority people research ways about make money online

2. Eventually they hear terms like affiliate marketing,
information marketing etc

3. They decided to learn and try something

4. Now is the tragedy. They hear a lot of terms : SEO,
wordpress, adwords, content is king, facebook mastery,
twitter secret, keyword research, clickbank, commission junction,
shareasale, $100/day etc (All these constitute 50% of your success
and the remaining 50% is marketing)

5. Months and years are spent to learn
more about these terms

6. Majority people get frustrated and quit.
They never get all the pieces of the puzzle

They never try to learn the fundamentals of marketing and business.

I got a clear picture only after I listened to some
copywriting experts and real business men. That made
all the difference

Let me tell you what I realised in simple terms

step1: We are targeting a group of people with
common problems and needs(Market)

step2: Selling/recommending products and services
to solve their problems

step3: Using internet as a "Medium" to reach our market

Understanding your market is very important.
Learn how your prospects are thinking,
what their problems are, what language they use etc.

Drive targeted traffic to your website/blog

Learn the art of convincing them you really understand
their problem and have a solution for it.

People are spending years to master their marketing skills
in the offline world but people are very unrealistic
when they come online.

As long as human nature doesn't change,
basic marketing principles remain the same

I highly recommend you spend sometime
everyday to sharpen your marketing skills.

You need not to listen to internet marketing gurus.
It's better to learn from poeple who have success
both online and offline and ready to share
their marketing wisdom

Thanks

It is good to listen to internet marketing guru's but really are they likely to reveal top tips.
I think it is better to try the ways you know work and then try different promotion tactics. Instead of trying what everyone else is doing keep promoting in different ways.

For instance we often see in discussions: "Don't try that it never works" or "Article Marketing is dead" or "do not place no follow links". OK these may not work, or are the experts trying to throw us off track?

      Thanks for the suggestion.

When I first started doing affiliate marketing,
all I knew was that I wanted to make money.
      No idea what to do.

I tried to sell some internet marketing stuff and failed
(No idea about my market was the main reason for failure)

I changed my strategy immediately when I understood
      some basic marketing.

I targeted a group of people with a common health problem
Researched the market and realized their pain and frustration
(use google, related forums, yahoo answers etc)
personally reviewed a good product that solved their problem
Write a genuine review about that product
send targeted traffic through forum marketing

      That brought some good sales

      Hope it helps

    Regarding wiki

"Marketing is defined by the AMA as "the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large." [1]"

Most who come into IM do know squad about Marketing, but as the systems to build a business is somehow easy to learn, a few open minded which work hard can make it online, even without a marketing background.

Some have it in the blood to help people and sell some at the same time , others never get it (even with a marketing degree in hand).

Quick Solution: Head over to Amazon,
spend $50 or $100 on books from the
    Marketing section.

    Read them.

Some will suck, some will be good, and
some will give you ideas you may not
    have otherwise had.

Either way, for $50 you'll be a better
    marketer than you are now.

    Hope that helps.

For me it's not just about "marketing" but like you pointed about, it's about being able to communicate with others in a successful way.

Having command of the English language is something that I'm always striving to practice and be successful in implementing.

I can tell you right now that if I see a few minor errors in your English grammar and style I will be less likely to listen to you or what you have to offer. Everyone is at different levels. I would say practice Ad Copy, and writing superb English and you will see more and more people reading what you have to say.

It's no coincidence that some of the most successful people in this business have a mastery of the English language.

    What drives people to buy?

That's the question you need to find the answer to.

Your ebooks or downloads or software don't matter by themselves. So you're offering a thing? Your prospects don't care. What they have are problems. Maybe what you're offering is a solution.

Start finding out what typical problems your market is having...then you can provide the solution to those problems. Otherwise, you're just sticking your shingle out saying "I have a mousetrap." Instead, you should be looking for people who have a rodent problem.

Nikhil, Regarding your ideas: I wholeheartedly agree. Very well said. Any knowledgeable person in the marketing realm can follow your logic. Concurring with these remarks, allow me to recommend Bob Burg's Endless Referrals. His book was the forerunner to the Law of Attraction, which internet gurus regard as the underlying marketing principle.

His central question, upon meeting a prospect, that absolutely bowled them over runs something [I am sure I am close, but probably not exact] like this: When I meet someone, how do I know if that person is a good prospect for you?

When you ask that question, the focus is on them and their business. Can you see why they would absolutely be bowled over?

Well I would say everyone is right and everyone is wrong. What works for me may not work for you. What I teach you may not.
My way may be a different way than yours but the same, less or greater results.
I would hate to think we all go about everything the same way and get back exactly the same thing.

But yes you are correct. I was just thinking outloud is all, someone just grilled me because I said something he didn't believe in. I give everything a try once.

The best thing better than a guru is experience. You can fail your way into success quickly... and learn a thing or 2... then learn how to do a marketing strategy the right way. This is the fastest and best way to learn something.

When i used to be an IT Technician at my old job, the first day my boss put me on the phone with a client who needed to know why their Microsoft Outlook wasn't working. I had no idea what to do, but luckily my boss came in and rescued the situation.

Low and behold... fast forward 9 months later, i had mastered my job, and even won employee of the quarter. So the next time you consider buying a "guru's" product... keep in mind that you will retain only a little bit of that knowledge in your mind. But the minute you start using the tips and advice in the real world (your business)... you will get a fast crash course to marketing successfully on the internet.

While most internet marketers do not have any formal training in marketing, those who do hold a distinct advantage in understanding their potential clients etc. Marketing is not a field for everyone though, but even knowing the basics can go a long way in improving ones business. Being a guru in the technical aspect of internet marketing only gets you so far!

I think very few internet marketers truly have a strong grasp of marketing. Often, this begins with understanding how to craft an effective sales letter. I see a lot of "marketers" writing their sales letter off the top of their heads, without following the proven structures and step-by-step formulas that are out there for you to model your sales letters on.

This is a nice post man. I do agree about the last paragraph that we should not listen to the IM gurus and only listen to those people who are having real success in this field. This is why people are doing internet marketing that knows how to market their products, offers and services.

I think there is a heavy element of testing involved in marketing. some people are gifted with that "instinct" to know if a product or market is right to target, but for the main part, especially online, you really need to research and test what works and what doesn't.

in a way, offline marketing is easier because recipients of marketing messages aren't in such a rush. sitting down with a store catalogue, for example, will probably hold the readers attention for significantly longer than it would online. the internet is a fast medium, and IMO much tougher to get customers through than offline channels.

I personally got out of the "Make Money" niches a long time ago and went back to things I love and have a personal interest in ... and my income quickly reflected the results of my decisions. For me at least, it was a matter of building up return traffic, getting people involved, finding out what their issues were, what problems they needed solved and what products they wanted ... and providing them with a means to obtain what they wanted/needed. I was actually out of IM altogether for a while but since I have my very first baby ever on the way this April, I am getting back into it. The biggest difficulty for me is building up the return traffic.

You basically have to look at marketing like you are the drug dealer and the customer is the addict.. Thats really all it comes down to. You should be able to get people to pay for things they didnt even know they want or need...
