Kindle is paying my electricity bill!

OK, so I am not making millions, but I thought a little success would still motivate others.

I read a few good guides on Kindle publishing here and in the War Room (no, not those "spam Kindle with recycled PLR" guides) and decided to write a Kindle title: a short guide to succeeding in a career in the area where I currently run a small business (unrelated to IM, which is my other career ).

It's been out a few months, but seemed to hit a critical mass (like the top 5 in several categories) this month, selling about 35 units, which I was pretty pleased with. Could be the new years resolution crowd, but I don't think so Have currently got a 100% 5-star rating from readers and am also gradually building a modest list of buyers by offering a freebie (some sample job application cover letter templates).

I have got quite a few ideas for additional titles and resources that I will be able to put out as products on the back of this one, though I would still welcome ideas for that "killer money-making product" in the area of careers. I am thinking a premium-priced coaching/training membership site or autoresponder course.

Anyway, so the message is that there is a great market out there for quality Kindle titles, especially ones which serve up a concise guide to a specific area that you are knowledgeable about. Very often these niches are dominated by huge, bulky encyclopaedic guides costing $17.99 which instead of helping people just confuse them even more.

There's an idea for a start: write a career guide for the area you are/have been successful in. Or a simple no-fluff, "how to" guide for just about anything you are knowledgeable about, especially where people are hungry for information that will improve their lives or profit them (eradicating cockroaches, making friends, xxxx for dummies - use your imagination!).

You could soon be earning literally TENS of dollars a month like me But of course, that is just the springboard - where you take it from there, well, the sky is the limit.

Congrats Markowe, yes yes yes, you are doing the right thing. Isn't this exciting? When you write 'quality' kindle books, then you will find that your sales just keep going up and people keep buying. Kindle has made it so much easier for us since December so I hope people grab on this chance to write their QUALITY books and share their expertise. Those 35 units should roll over with a higher number next month. That's what I am discovering. Keep up the quality.

    • Okay, I have a question for you Kindle authors. It may seem silly but I don't have a Kindle.

Do Kindle results show up in a regular Amazon search?

Let's say I wrote a Kindle book on how to buy a pool heater. Would it come up in the results for a search on the phrase "pool heater"?

I haven't seen my titles in Kindle come up BUT... I have seen one of my in print titles come up in an Amazon listing. It also comes up on Google as an adsense listing that Amazon are paying for. I love the fact that amazon have an adsense program for my createspace book.

You can get a feel for Kindle by downloading the free Kindle App for your PC or MAC. I did that just to read some of the free titles and see how it looks. You can also download over 1 million Kindle books on it. It's pretty sweet.

Congrats on your Kindle success...it's fun isn't it!

One thing you will notice is once your book starts gaining momentum and sells more, it moves up the top sellers list in it's category and as long as your book is good, your description is top notch and you have a great looking cover, it will be like a snowball and sales will keep increasing for you. If you add a little marketing Kung Fu to it at that point then it really gets interesting.

Sounds like you have a good book that is starting to snowball.

This is great advice for people who want to sell Kindle books. I must admire the fact that you got into a niche that you are knowledgeable in, rather than one that is notorious for making quick money online. That is one of the key factors that has resulted in your success till now , in my opinion. Keep up the hard work!

Congrats on your success. There's another valuable message in here.

So many people fix their eyes on the big money, the five (or six) figures a month, and get discouraged when they 'only' make a smaller amount.

A good way to build is to set goals based on what the money can do for you.

Your Kindle project covers your electric bill. Now the money you used to pay the utility company can be used for something else.

Another person I know wanted to drive one of those fancy cars you see so often in MMO sales letter headers. He didn't want to own one, he just wanted to drive one. So he set a goal to create enough income from his project to cover the lease payments. Once he reached that level, he leased his dream car. When the lease was up, he traded it for the new model.

Maybe you want to live in a better house. You could use a two-step goal. First, cover the difference between what you pay now and what the new house would cost. Then aim to cover all of it.

Sorry if I took this thread a bit off-track. Your story and the subject line just dovetailed perfectly, along with the usual number of threads about people getting discouraged.

Keep up the good work, and congrats again...

Thanks everybody for the positive comments. Squirrels, ha ha, like it, yes, they can take a break now, they were eating me out of house and hazelnuts anyway.

Oh yes, the plugin is a COMPLETELY different area of interest. Kind of tricky juggling all those niches, but I think a Kindle edition is a great way to test the waters for a new niche and gauge interest. And I think the snowball effect is an apt way to describe the way sales build (if the book is going to fly at all), because once you hit the top slots it seems to keep going. Unless of course you have the resources for a big launch, which probably isn't realistic for most Kindle authors.

Yep Kindle is very very good and provides a huge opportunity for those that take action. I have used Kindle myself and it's something I will be heading very deeply into this year.

I've done over 200 sales in January alone so its very exciting stuff.

Interstingly enough I've been watching, following and reading up on a bunch of writers that publish fictional novels. Wow! There numbers are crazy with several of them doing hundreds of units per day.

Obviously good writers and the numbers are so inspiring.

I haven't written any novels just 'How To' style books and with good success. if you're on the fence with this one, hop off it.

re: the question: can you republish books from elsewhere onto kindle: yes you can, but really, really really, please don't do it unless you are the original author. a) it's about quality b) you have to have the rights c) amazon is cracking down on rehashed plr.

at the end of the day, the real key here is to give the readers something of value. Feel good about what you are doing. Service is the goal, and profits can come from that, not vice versa.

My book tots up to about 35 pages according to Amazon - I guess that is just some ballpark figure they calculate, since obviously Kindle publications don't have physical pages. That's around 12,000 words, if you want it expressed that way. Not hard to write at all if you are knowledgeable about the subject, and interested in it. My first draft was 16,000 words and I thought I was giving away far too much juicy stuff for a $2.99 Kindle edition And I didn't want to overwhelm the reader with info, that was not the point. So I pared it down a bit and will use the other materials to build into other titles or products in the future.

About not having copywriting skills. Hmm, not sure what to say. Maybe for something like a career guide it is not SO important that it be a literary masterpiece, but still, it does have to be readable and to make sense, and obviously not be full of major style/spelling/grammatical errors.

I guess it would be good to go through some online resources (I am sure there are some) about some basic principles of writing. Even making sure your work has a proper structure will do wonders for readability. Maybe also getting someone to proofread it, even if it costs a little. You could find some impoverished English student to do it for slave wages (sorry, but it's true, I was a languages undergrad once!)

Someone asked about the Amazon search results - yes, if you type in anything related to your book title your book will appear in the listings, regardless of whether it is a Kindle edition or not. How far up it will appear depends on how relevant Amazon judges it to be to the search and also its sales status.

I know my book is doing well because all I have to type in is a word relating to the career I have written about and my book is the first book to appear (though there are other items from other categories above my book, like electronics and stuff). In Books, if you type in "bus driver" (not really that, but you get the idea) my book comes up FIRST, which I am blown away by, because there are many other very established titles in this niche (but they are all huge and cost $15-$20)!

P.S. Another exciting opportunity, if your book looks like being a good seller, is to get it published in "solid" form via CreateSpace. That could even get it in bookshops around the US for you if you go for the Expanded Distribution option, though it only seems to be worthwhile for longer titles (110+ pages and somewhat higher priced titles, e.g. more than $7-8) as their cut is quite big otherwise. Well, they do have to print the darn' thing, after all, and it is still much more generous to the publisher than classic publishing.

  • Well, i tried to kindle my book a few minutes ago but the formatting came out pretty messed up. But i don't blame them, its a weird handwritten book that is made up of 15 A4 scans some of which have captions.

Here is one example of such a scan:

Kindle would have been a great platform for a book like this, the high definition scans would render beautifully on all tablet devices.

I don't think the Kindle is that well suited to graphics-heavy titles, especially not those where the entire page consists of graphics. I am not sure exactly how you would format something like that, but probably you need to simplify the HTML as much as possible and not try to do anything too clever. The Kindle is orientated towards text at the end of the day. Why can't you publish this using text with basic formatting and vector-drawn diagrams?

No, although Kindle devices can read PDFs, Kindle books cannot actually be published in PDF. They are best imported from, say a Word file, with very basic formatting, into the Mobipocket Creator program which then converts them into the Kindle format. But I believe the intermediate file created is actually an HTML file, so it would be best to edit your title in this format, or at least import it into the Creator and then tweak the intermediate HTML file before publishing.

You CAN import a PDF into Mobipocket too, but the problem with that is PDF is just too complicated and format-heavy and you are likely to have problems when you import it. Probably best to avoid that.

It's been a few months since I did that, so apologies if I don't quite remember all the details...

This is very close to the advice I've gotten from a few successful Kindle publishers. The simplest sequence I've gotten goes something like this:

        > Using a word processor like Open Office Writer, create your book as a single file with embedded graphics. Save as an HTML file. They specifically recommended OO because it creates html code without all the bloat Word puts in.

        > MobiPocket Creator to convert the html file and assorted graphics to the .mobi format.

        > Upload that file to Kindle.

Oh, very well pointed out, never EVER try to create HTML files in MS Word! "Bloat" is probably putting it mildly by an order of 10!

Congrats on your success. Every little bit helps and from what I've been seeing, Kindle book publishing is something to be taken seriously as a income generator. Once you've got some success under your belt its all about rinse and repeat .

Thank you for this link. I am working on my first kindle book and this will really come in handy.

I have picked up a few other suggestions on others forums for kindle publishing that I have not seen in this tread yet. One of the authors that I chatted with said to make sure to submit it to Nook as well. For some titles her Nook sales are doing just as well as kindle.

The other piece of advice was to make sure your author page is filled out. This links all of your written titles together and can be a great way to increase sales.

Thanks for the motivational post! This is something I definitely need to try soon. As I always say, there are SO many ways to make money online, you just have to find ones that work for you. And it's crazy, because most of the time you don't actually need money, because these shops are free to set up - the really make it easy for anyone.

And even if you were lazy and weren't good at coming up with content or weren't creative enough to have designs for shirts in your own shop or something, you could outsource that to others...and then write a short Kindle book about how you have really no talent except knowing where to find others with talent and knowing the resources and sites to plug that content into to make $$$.

You can make money doing anything. Don't believe me??? Have you heard of Snuggie

If you have reached the apex of what Amazon can do for your books, as you suggested in the OP, then you need to think about spreading your wings and marketing your books outside of the Amazon/Kindle marketplace.

Amazon is only one marketplace for your books, and with the web being what it is, you can funnel a lot of traffic from other sources to your Amazon-listed titles, providing you the opportunity to sell a lot more of your books.

      Thanks, sound advice.

I think for one thing I would want to offer my book for sale through my own site so I wouldn't have to give Amazon a cut. Their TOS allows that, provided you do not sell it for a lower price than on Amazon.

There is also Createspace that I mentioned earlier, publishing it as a physical book, but the model is much less favourable to publishers, especially for short titles. You can only figure to earn 10-15% of the sale price at best. Yeah, I know that still beats classic publishing but...

Also I figure repurposing the material into an audiobook or video course. These seem to be best sold through ones own site too. Unless anyone knows of a better channel for selling audiobooks - Audible is a no-go unless you are a larger publisher and iTunes requires you to have a US tax code and some other stuff, pain in the ****.

Repurposing is still a lot of extra work, but could be very worthwhile...

My eventual plan is to break up the book I have written into a two-weeks to one-month correspondence course or membership site with additional practice materials, etc. etc., but again, that all takes time, something I have precious little of, unfortunately...

      Any other good brainstorming ideas..?

That's a quality idea... writing kindle books on "How to become..."

I'm sure there are lots of folk on here who've been firemen, soldiers, nurses, policemen, martial arts instructors, lawyers, accountants etc etc and that there is a market for selling guides with information on becoming one of them.

An insiders approach for anyone with real life experience. The irony of course is that you'll be trying to quit your job as a chef, web designer, manager or whatever but people will be buying tips on how to become it.

Easy to do and food for thought.

Nice idea, OP! Most working people who are established in their careers know their jobs inside-out. Almost anyone could write a book and sharing their personal experience and lessons learned along the way.

This idea could also be used in the small business arena. Entrepreneur Magazine for example publishes start-up kits on a wide variety of businesses. But somebody with hands on experience could provide more of the 'nuts and bolts' - real life experiences.

I have written a social media marketing book and I am very tempted to use the kindle rather than Clickbank or traditional publishing. I have changed my mind numerous times now what to do with it. What worries me is the fact that my book is a 160 pages long (that's A4, even longer in kindle), so if it bombs it is much more of a big deal than releasing a number of shorter books. The kindle is a very tempting idea though.

The perceived value of Kindle books is still lower than other channels, at least that's my feeling. So I am not sure I would commit an entire product to Kindle, for the reasons you say (what if it flops), and because you can't really charge the double-dollar figure your product is probably worth.

For me, Kindle is more of funnel opening, to get subscribers and get a name for yourself. The format lends itself more to short, concise titles rather than huge tomes.

So I am more inclined to create either multiple, short guides (effectively split up my huge opus) or probably just one, on the back of which I will sell additional products at top dollar on my own site, that use the "leftover" (juicy) stuff from my main product, such as coaching materials, membership site, whatever.

At least, that's the way I am going with this, we shall see...

Go for it. There's no reason you cant put your book on both Kindle and Clickbank - you are allowed as its your content and there are lots of authors doing this.

You could also break your book up into smaller books and upload them all to Kindle 1 at a time. Just release a 'part 1' and see how that sells before you go to the effort of uploading all the other parts.

If you look at the top sellers on Kindle there are a wide variety of books, in different niches. But have you seen any on social media marketing? I do think the Amazon market is different than the CB one. And people have told me their IM books do not do well on Amazon. So I can see where you will really want to consider if that is the right outlet for your book. But I would imagine you can always switch from one to the other.

As for traditional publishing, social media changes so fast, by the time your book comes out - it may be dated. But even if not, I think those using Social Media would get most of their info online.

Congrats! I love the kindle (both for reading stuff and publishing stuff!) The best part is that the more sales you make, the more sales you will make due to the way their search engine works.

People shouldn't be put off by the low prices that books go for in the kindle market - there a million bazillion people out there wanting to read stuff on their kindles and Amazon has a built in marketing system to help get your book in their hands.

That's actually against their TOS so I wouldn't do it. As you can imagine, there's probably a lot of people abusing this very thing so there will inevitably be some sort of crackdown in the future.

We have not made it to that level, but we are finding kindle to be better and better and earning some money here and there. Some people are killing it though. Especially if you get in some of the more competitive niches. The IM niches do VERY POORLY on kindle so make sure you stay away from them.
