Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

I just published my first amazon kindle book yesterday. I was so excited it sold a copy at $2.99 within the first 12 hours of being published.

Today I am using Day 1 of the free promotion with the KDP select program. Does anyone know about how many times your book needs to be downloaded for free before it can be seen in one of the Top 100 Free Ebooks list in any category?

Mine has been purchased/downloaded for free over 60 times and I'm still not seeing it in the Top 100 list in any category, even though some of the categories the book is in only have 5 or 6 other titles? Anyone with experience in this who can give me some insight on how this works?

Success with Kindle depends on a number of things.

        1. A quality book

        2. Subject matter that people are looking for

        3. A way of people finding your book on Kindle/Amazon

There are numerous methods I use for promotion but the main three are:-

        A. Join all forums remotely connected with the Kindle, writing, self publishing. Link your sig on these forums to your Blog. Also join online communities where your readers congregate.

        B. A blog. Either an authors blog or a blog devoted to a specific book. How you use this website depends on what type of book you have written.

        C. The new kindle select programme has improved sales of my books. One in particlular is number 2 and number 17 in its categories after being placed on the select programme.

The Kindle Select program is a new program by Amazon that allows Kindle author's to give away their ebooks for free. To qualify to receive the free ebook, you must meet these 2 conditions:
            1. You must own a Kindle
            2. You must be registered with Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime members are allowed to download 1 free ebook every month. Well, by now I'm sure you are wondering that if you are giving away your eBook for free, how are you going to be making money?
The simple answer is that you will be making money by giving away your eBook for free, possibly more than you would have made if you weren't. Mind you, you will still be selling your eBook to others at regular price who are not Amazon Prime members, even if they do have a Kindle.
The way you will make money is like this:
Every month, Amazon sets aside some money for author's who participate in the Kindle Select program. In December, the amount was $500,000. This month, January, the amount is $700,000. Let's assume that this month, a total of 400,000 eBooks were downloaded for free through the Kinde Select program. Let's also assume that out of that 400,000 total number of downloads, your own eBook was downloaded 4000 times.
To get the amount that Amazon would pay you, divide 4000 by 400,000 and multiply it by $700,000 (the amount set aside by Amazon for January). That equals $7,000. That means at the end of the free giveaway period, Amazon will send you a check for $7,000.
Please note that to participate in the Kindle Select program, you must make your eBook exclusively available on the Kindle. This is for a period of 3 months. That means you cannot sell it on iBooks, Google ebooks, the Nook or other tablets for 3 months.

So you will have to weigh your options to know whether you would like to sell your eBook exclusively through Kindle Select or sell it normally and also be able to list it for sale on other tablets and ereaders.
It's all a numbers game but nothing ventured, nothing gained. You could test the waters first with a few of your ebooks and see how they perform. However, it must be noted that success in this program depends on a number of factors such as the niche.
            All the best!

Yes -- you must make your ebook available through Kindle exclusively for 90 days. This means you cannot sell it anywhere else - including your own site. I think the only exception is if you've also published a hard-copy version through Createspace (another Amazon company).

When you choose the KDP Select program, you're given the option of "promoting" your title for up to 5 days over each 90-day period. You can do it for 24 hours at a time and test the waters. "Promoting" means giving your ebook away free of charge, which hopefully causes a surge in the number of downloads, increasing your book's ranking and visibility.

Try getting legitimate reviews for your book. I heard that might help the ranking. Also ask marketers to promote the book and the top promoters could win a prize.

    1. Write an epic book.

    2. Market the heck out of it.

    3. Build your brand as an author and/or genre/book's brand via social media

    4. Model other successful self published authors

Good advice, however if you choose your niche and title carefully you can get a page one ranking on Amazon then you wont have to do any marketing at all as Amazon has lots of traffic already.
