How do you estimate the value of a list?

I know there are several variables which can come into play here, but since so many people build so many lists, I figured there might be some insight available into this.

How do you estimate expected value from a project designed to build a list in a given niche?

For the sake of this discussion we'll set some variable rules. Since so many on this forum are in the 'make money online' niche, we'll use that niche to set our stage.

1. Niche - MMO
2. Target audience - Beginner/intermediate IM'ers
3. Newsletter style list with emails 3 times a week at minimum.

How would you estimate your projected gross/profit at 500 subscribers, 1000 subscribers, 5000 subscribers, etc?

Any discussion is appreciated.

I think even with the variables stated it is far too vague to give any meaningful answer. A lot of Internet Marketers will tell you they expect to make around $1-$2 per subscriber per month but there would be plenty of marketers making a lot more than that and plenty of marketers making a lot less than that.

Personally I don't 'expect' to make any set amount per month. I only let my lists know about products I truly think will be of benefit to them so there might be some months when they barely hear from me and others when they get two emails only days apart.

I don't like to look at my subscribers as a guaranteed source of income... anything I make along the way whilst helping them is a bonus.

Like WillR said there are just too many variables. It depends how they were "sold" to join the list in the first place, how valuable the content you give them is, how much they like you, how hard you sell them, on and on and on. There are no real averages in this game. The short answer is - just do it and you'll find out.
